Lagae Family in Stormont 1851
GrGrandfather Joseph(Logue Ligue) Lagae was born there in 1843, I believe and moved to Chicago. Wondering about if this is him and was he Irish or French? Any other family related to the Lagae's of Stormont ?

Try spelling it Lague as there are 5 of them in the Cornwall Ontario phone book . Or maybe Legue as there are 20 of them , and lots more in outlying areas . My guess is that it may originally be a French name .

Re: Lagae Family in Stormont 1851
Thank you. I did see the Lague spelling in 1851 Census. I guess, historically, I didn't know how many people of French ancestry settled in that area and married a woman of Irish ancestry. Joseph then moves to Chicago settles into an Irish area an is a laborer/brick layer. I am becoming more convinced that it is him in Stormont in 1851. His children did have similar first and second names that would seem to connect them. I am thinking while living in Stormont, Dominique and Mary gave their children more English first names.

I think that sometimes a Priest or other prominent citizen might take a hand in the matter . Such a name as Le Bois became Wood , and I seem to recall that a man named Jean-Baptiste Sans Quartier suddenly became John Kirkey on his wedding license .

My relatives are Lague (Legree)'s of Osnabruck in Stormont. If you do find out you are on the Lague line, I'd be happy to share what I have.

Re: Lagae Family in Stormont 1851
I would be interested to see the information. Is your tree public? I have made a DNA connection with a L Legree, whose relatives are from Stormont. I now have confirmed through many DNA connections on Ancestry, my relative is a Dominique Lague 1851, who is actually Dominique Laboursodire dit Laguille. His name evolved to Ligue in the US. His brother's became Leguee. It seems others became Legree and even Needle in the US. Laguille, I was told means needle in French. My tree is public on Ancestry, under bird29 ( Bird Family Tree). I have with the help of other DNA relatives made quite a bit of connections, recently.
