Surnames: Smyrl
I am looking for information on ANY Sm*rl of ANY spelling, hoping to be able to connect my immigrant(?), Thomas Smurl (Which was spelled about ten different ways in one book). Thomas was first found on the 1790 census in Kershaw Co. SC. Our family doesn't know for sure where he came from, but most think it was Ireland. There is a story though that three brothers came from Wales and went in different directions after coming here. I know about George Smirl in PA, and since the Old Wagon Road ran between PA and Camden SC (Kershaw Co). It seems possible that Thomas could have been kin to George in some way or other, and I would like to follow this up. On the other hand, There may be other Sm*rl's connected to this family as well. I would like to hear from ANYONE doing research on these lines. Thanks, Meg

hi..I have a Geoge Smirl (b. NY) m. to a Susanna (b. PA) and they had at least 5 kids born in WI, they were:
Ida M. (b.abt.1867), Ada L. (b. abt.1869), Loren (b.abt.1871), Leonard (b. abt. 1873), and James Ransom Smirl (b. abt.1877).
I am not a descendant of the Smirls, so I haven't devoted much time to them yet. Would this George be related to the George you mentioned in your posting?

Theresa, do you know anything about his Parents or what part of NY he came from? He seems to be of an age that he could have been a son of the George in my posting, or of a brother of Geo and Thomas from SC (my line), IF in fact there is a connection between them. I tend to believe that old family stories have some basis in fact, and that there might be something to the story of the three brothers. But I need to go back further than 1800, maybe back before 1750 since Thomas was younger than George in PA, who served in the Revolutionary War. If we can find one set of parents from NY or PA or anywhere in that area, we might be able to find or discredit a family connection.
Since you aren't a descendant of the Smirls, if you decide to pass on the research would you please give my email address to anyone you find who wants to take it on. It isn't easy since there are so few of them. My email address is mjw3944@bellsouth.net If you do find anything would you please let me know?

Thanks for your reply, I had forgotten I posted it.
