Does anyone know the original reason for the Quenneville family's presence in the Rockland/Clarence Creek area? Some of Hyacinthe and Josèphte's children left Ottawa to go live there, but I can't figure out why. Any help is appreciated.

On the 1901 census it gives their occupation as farmers. Maybe free land was being given away.

Perhaps the answer is as simple as you say. My ancestor, Cyrille, bought farmland in 1901, but in Edwards, Ontario. He was censused in Clarence Creek in 1891 for reasons I am not aware. I am hoping that someone on Ancestry will know the answer.

Hi, Not really an answer to your question but Perhaps Cyrille QUENNEVILLE - was visiting / working or researching farmland - in the Clarence Creek area during the 1891 Census.
We are included in the census for the place where we are - on census day - not necessarily - where our residence / family are. Cheers, Stella

My best guess is that he was visiting his brother Hyacinthe, who died in that area a few months later. I have no doubt that Cyrille was a resident of Hintonburg at that time.
Gedeon and Antime were there as early as 1877, and they both worked as labourers. What I don't understand is why they left their homes and their jobs in Ottawa to go to Clarence. Gedeon later returned to Ottawa (Hull), but Antime seems to have remained. Their sister, Eulalie, may also have lived in the area, but I don't have any records to back that up.
