Hello Marlene:

Sarah Jane SULLIVAN was the first daughter born of James SULLIVAN (b. 1820) and Jane JAMES (b. 1839). Sarah was born January 28, 1861 on the farm in rural Cumberland Township and was baptized on September 15, 1861 in Cumberland by the Rev. Richard Wilson. The SULLIVAN family was ethnic Irish and Methodist.

Sarah Jane SULLIVAN married Charles Michael KELLY (b. 1857) on September 28, 1881. The marriage was celebrated in Sainte-Anne's Catholic Church in City of Ottawa's Lower Town neighbourhood. The KELLY family was ethnic Irish and Roman Catholic. In the first decade of the 1900’s the family lived at 378 Cooper Street in Ottawa and had two servants. Sarah was a stay at home mom and Charles KELLY was a lumberman and he reported income of $1966 in 1901 Census.

Children of Sarah Jane SULLIVAN and Charles Michael KELLY

1. Sarah Jane SULLIVAN (b.1861)
sp: Charles Michael KELLY (b.1857; m.1881)
2. Edith KELLY (b.1882)
2. Emma KELLY (b.1884)
2. Sarah KELLY (b.1886)
2. Joseph KELLY (b.1888)
2. Charles KELLY (b.1890)
2. William KELLY (b.1892)
2. Rose KELLY (b.1894)
2. Irene KELLY (b.1895)
2. Hugh J. KELLY (b.1899)
2. Lino KELLY (b. 1902)

However, I have no information on daughter Isabella Augusta (Queenie) married Frank Charles Tyrell and I would be most interested in anything you can provide me.

Charles Michael KELLY was born on July 16, 1857 in Ontario to William KELLY and Mary BYRNES. Charles father William was ethnic Irish, Methodist and born in Ontario about 1839 and his mother Mary was Irish Catholic and born in Ontario about 1845. William KELLY worked for CC Rail and the family moved about with his job and lived in Quebec and Ontario and then moved to Brockville, Ontario by 1881. I have Charles birthplace recorded as Ontario and his younger siblings George and Annie recorded as being born in Quebec.

Jane SULLIVAN nee JAMES (b. 1839)

About 1857, James SULLIVAN married Jane JAMES. Jane was born to William JAMES and Catherine Margaret BUCHANAN about 1839 in County Carlow, Donegal, Ireland. Jane had several brothers and sisters all born Ireland; Susanna (b.1825); Samuel (b.1826); Thomas (b.1822); James (b. 1831); Marie (b.1834) and Antony (b.1838). William JAMES was born in Tully Augnish Parish, Rathmelton Townland, County Donegal, Ireland in 1794. He married Catherine Margaret BUCHANAN in County Carlow, Ireland about 1822. Both William and his wife Catherine were unable to read or write. William operated a 100 acre farm at E½ lot 28, concession 7, Cumberland Township, Russell County, Ontario near. The second oldest person buried in the Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Bearbrook is Jane’s father, William JAMES, born in 1794 and died 89 years later in 1883. (stone No. 59)

Anything you can provide on Tyrell and Silmser link to SULLIVAN/JAMES family would be gratefully received.

David

Hi David - thank you for sharing this information. Per Tyrell linkage - Frank Charles Tyrell son Harriet Newton and Henry William Tyrell married Irene Augusta Kelly (dau of Charles Michael Kelly and Sara Anne Sullivan) on 28 October 1919 in Ottawa, Ontario. Frank was employed as a Queen's printer and a very successful photographer (see National Archives). He lived at 156 Turner street - and Irene (known as Queenie) lived at 378 Cooper at time of marriage. Queenie was a Milliner by trade. I understand the moved to 298 James Street after. They were married at St. Patricks, but Frank was not Catholic. I have the marriage excerpt from the register. They had three sons - Ross (Rosie)Tyrell(played hockey Montaguards) Brian Tyrell, (Tyrell Press), and George Stanley Tyrell. My sister is married to one of Rosie (Ross) sons. Rosie died 16 October 2006 in Florida. Oral history has it that Queenie suffered from mental or emotional illness and was institutionalized later in her life. She died 14 Jan 1950 and is buried in Ottawa at Notre Dame cemetery.

Per SLIMSER link - My grandfather Paternal Roy Willis O'Neil, was the son of Edward O'Neil and Almira Kyer. Almira's sister Sophie Agnes Kyer married Stanley Silmser 19 April 1887 in Cornwall, Ontario. Their daughter (they have 9 children as my records indicate) Althea married Ernie Whitford - son of James EDWARD Whitford and Eliza Speck - who was sister to my Grandfather Roy Willis O'Neil's first wife - Gertrude May Whitford. The Whitford line descends from an escaped slave Jacob Whitford (died in 1843 in Cornwall, Ontario - married to Elizabeth Baker - her brother John Baker was known as the last slave in Canada. Back to Silmser - I have some of the marriages and children information per Stanley and Sophia Kyer. My tree is posted free on www.rootsweb.com so you may want to punch a few of these names in and trace along what I have - contact me direct through roots (address is there) and I would be pleased to send you records I have.

Hello,

This is Sean Michael Kelly, son of Kenneth Kelly (and Suzanne DeGagne) and great grandson of Charles Michael Kelly. So happy to find some information on Charles's parents, William and Mary! The gravestone for Charles Michael Kelly at Notre-Dames cemetery in Ottawa give the same year of birth but says he was born in Dublin, not Ontario! Can you tell me anything more about your sources?

All the best, Sean

Hello Sean,

re: information on Charles's parents

Have recently updated my family tree info via correspondence with other researchers clarifying Charles Michael Kelly was born Dublin (per headstone) not Ontario indicating I was going down the wrong path in my search of Charles parents. It is now apparent I made an error back in 2008 concluding John and Mary as his parents (they were both born in Ontario not Ireland) - but I'll keep searching.

Have recently received photo of Charles Michael KELLY, husband of Sarah Ann SULLIVAN and photo of their gravestone at Notre-Dames cemetery which I would be happy to pass on to you if you wish.
Unfortunately, I have no old photos of Sarah Ann.

I am descended from the line of George William SULLIVAN, my Great-Grandfather
and the older brother of Sarah Ann SULLIVAN.

Cheers,

Dave Sullivan

Hello Dave!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. How neat that we share the same (for me great-)great-grandparents on the Sullivan side! It's unfortunate that I can't find out anything about Charles Michael Kelly's parents...I also wish I knew more about Sarah.

Wishing you all the best for the year ahead.

Sean
