Classification: Query
Surnames: Shaw McDonogh
Looking for information on above family who were living at Mikado Mines on 80 miles from Kenora when son Cyril Desmond Shaw was born Sep 8 1905. Thomas Henry age 37 (born abt 1868 Northern Ireland) was a MIner in Gold Mine and wife Eileen (nee McDonogh) age 32 (born abt 1873 Dublin, Ireland.) They also had an older son Charles Eric Shaw born abt 1900 probably Ontario. Couple immigrated to Canada abt 1898. They do not show up in 1900 or 1911 census but show up in Red Deer, Alberta in 1916 census. Thomas died in Red Deer and Eileen remarried William Eyre and moved to Victoria, BC area where she died.
Copy of birth certificate attached.
Would anyone know of local records I could search that might have some information on couple?
I can be reached at Gerald Townsend>gejtownsend@telus.net
Thanks.

Hi Stella
Thanks for tips. My source of information comes from the birth certificate for Cyril Desmond Shaw. (see copy attached to original post). I have searched automatedgeneaogy website for 1901 and 1911 census and can't find the family. I found the 1901 link for Mikado Mines at Home / 1901 / Ontario / ALGOMA / Mikado Mine C-2 but surname listing shows no Shaws. Not able to find 1911 link and think mine may have been closed?

I have the 1916 census and vital statistics registrations quoted however thanks for looking. No info from living descendants or the obit of Eileen (McDonogh/Shaw/Eyre).

From the 1916 census for Red Deer Eileen McDonogh Shaw is shown as immigrating in 1898. Somewhere between 1905 and 1913 the family ended up in Red Deer area where Thomas filed for a homestead. In 1913 or 1914 Ethel Kathleen Shaw (who later married Fred Bertucci in Victoria) was born in Red Deer and then on February 13, 1916 Thomas died. No info in his obit on his origin.

The delayed birth registration for Cyril was done in 1945 and on it Eileen showed husband Thomas Shaw was born in Northern Ireland. I am guessing she couldn't remember where in Northern Ireland Thomas lived at. Eileen McDonogh Shaw later married William Eyre and later moved to Victoria where she died Feb 27 1958 as mentioned in your note. I have found Eileen's parents and ancestry in Dublin, Ireland but can't find her marriage to Thomas Henry Shaw nor his birth date, etc. That document would possibly give more info on Thomas.

Hoping to find some record here that would give more info on Thomas Henry Shaw born abt 1868. The delayed birth registration mentions Eileen provided marriage details but unfortunately the documentation was not kept. The homestead info indicates Thomas was naturalized i Jan 13, 1914 probably in AB. However records for naturalizations prior to 1915 were apparently destroyed.

Also hoping to find the oldest son Charles Shaw who as shown in 1916 census was born in Ontario abt 1900. He appears to have died between 1921 where he shows up on census and 1945 when mother Eileen states on delayed birth registration that only two children still living. I suspect he died in Red Deer or possibly Victoria area.

Also indication that Thomas was born in Maine but I think this is wrong. It may have been that the family went there for a while and why they don't show up in ON or AB until 1913/14.

Hi Stella
Thanks for the additional info. I have obtained the homestead record for Thomas Shaw but unfortunately no additional info to show his origin or vital statistics other than his death being recorded so wife could transfer property to a new owner.
I have sent in for naturalization records to Ottawa to see if perhaps there is something on the card index. Apparently the files for this period were destroyed. I will try the AB Archives to see if they possibly have something on the Jan 13, 1914 date of naturalization. Seems odd that he would get naturalized being an Irish immigrant and British subject. Perhaps the born in Maine might be correct. I did check the Border crossings and found nothing but always worth a second look.
