On Oct 31, 2003 Charles Franz posted a message about Kavanaugh, and deleted it before I could read it. I have Kavanaugh's in my tree, and would like to see if we match up Lynne

Lynne: saw your note about Kavanaugh family. My family is from Newfoundland and moved to Ontario in the forties and fifty's. If you feel any connection contact me.Rainy River is not all that far from me. Also there are not that many people who spell my family name the same way as you did.
Yours truly, Dolly B

Was your KAVANAUGH living in the area of Pinewood, Ontario about the turn of the century? I believe he came west about the time my John KEARNEY, TREAU and WARD families did; also with others from the Ottawa Valley and Hull, Quebec regions.
Have wanted to know more about this particular KAVANAUGH, totally assuming he was in some way related to my KEARNEY, WARD, or TREAU relatives. Have not researched this "Pinewood" KAVANAUGH of, say 1900, as my own family links have kept me occupied! HOUGH is another early Pinewood settler that arrived about the time of my relatives; don't know his relationship either. Later, there was TILSON. Do you have any photos or info on these early Pinewood homesteaders??

Hello The Kavanaughs that I have seemed to be mostly in the Thunder Bay (:Lakehead Port Arthur and Fort William area) The only one that I know came to the Rainy River District was Kay Kavanaugh, married to Paul Oltsher. Lynne

"Our Lady of the Way Parish-Pinewood, ON."
In their 100th Anniversary publication, page one states "The first Catholic colonist who came to live on the edge of the Rainy River, in 1885, was William HOUGH, originally of Renfrew, Ontario. He was Irish, so was Mr. J. KEARNEY (my Gr. Grandfather), his neighbour who lived five miles west of Pinewood (Sleeman) where he lived until his death in 1941. Other Catholics who came to establish themselves along the banks of the Rainy River were two Irishmen- E. WARD, Th. KAVANAUGH , and E. TREAU; all three came from Ottawa, Ontario. For this reason, the fact that he arrived with and settled near all my ancestors, I lean towards thinking he, KAVANAUGH, could have been a cousin, a brother-in-law, a relative in some way??? In 1897 an Agne KAVANAGH was one of 32 children and adults confirmed in this Catholic Church. I've not been researching Kavanaugh; just have a genuine interest in this Pinewood family. It "appears" that Thomas Kavanaugh came from Ottawa (or maybe Renfrew??).

Hi Thanks for the information. I feel that it should fit in with the family somewhere, but my mother in law never mentioned any family in the Rainy River Area. She was born in Thunder Bay, and her family originally came from Hamilton. I do have Thomas Kavanaughs but I can place them in Thunder Bay or in Southern Ontario. The Catholic, Irish background sure fits in with my Kavanaugh Family. Will have to keep on looking. Again thanks for your information Lynne

Does your Kavanaugh family have a Pinewood, Ontario link? I believe that back about the turn of the century this newly settled area was known as Riviere des Pins.

I don't know.How would I trace it back?

Thanks to Cathy Knight.I have found the lineage.
