VAN VLACK FAMILY

Surnames: Van Vlack, Houck, Tobey, Cameron, Speight, Wilds, Goodenow
It has been quite awhile since I have posted. I'm hoping for some information regarding John A. Van Vlack born 1801 New York. John A. Van Vlack immigrated to Canada and settled in Whitby, Reach Township, Ontario, Canada in approximately 1835. (I found him in the 1830 Census in Rose, Wayne County, New York State) My intrepretation of census is: John - His wife - three daughters and two sons. When John A. Van Vlack arrived in Canada it was with his wife and children. (children James Elias VV, John Barrett VV, Elizabeth VV (Speight), MaryAnne VV (Wilds) and I believe (Johan Mary Van Vlack have seen no other information on her expect in the 1851 census living with a George Houck). I believe John A. Van Vlack came to Canada with his wife and small children due to an obit of his daughter MaryAnne Van Vlack Wilds that stated she had come to Canada as a small child with her parents.

Next piece of information I have is that there was a notice in the New York Times about selling a property in Rose, Wayne County, N.Y. dated 1835 and that John A. Van Vlack whom the notice was to was a resident of Upper Canada.
I also found an old newspaper article (Kingston, Ontario, Canada) giving notice to someone by John A. Van Vlack regarding money owed. John A was noted as a Bailiff.

Next piece of information is a marriage to a Madelene Houck 18 Feb. 1839. John A. Van Vlack and his 2nd wife Madelena had three children; Madelena Van Vlack (Cameron), Clara Jane Van Vlack (Tobey) and Darwin Lewis Van Vlack married Mary Sykes. I assume John A. Van Vlack's first wife (name unknown but suspected as Elizabeth Barrett) would have died between 1835 and 1839. Madelene Houck had a brother George Houck who married a Charlotte Pratt. In the 1851 Census also same area as John A. Van Vlack he was living with a Sophia Pratt in her 60's as well as a JOHAN MARY VAN VLACK (spelt van vleck). George Houck and Lewis Houck were witness at John A. Van Vlack's marriage. George Houck and John A. Van Vlack belonged to the Masons.

No other information since this has been found on John A. Van Vlack. Most of John A. Van Vlack's children were married shortly after the 1851 census or just prior. I'm assuming that John A. Van Vlack would have died 1853 as there is no mention of him in the 1861 census. His children were living with older siblings. His wife in 1861 was living with her son Darwin Lewis Van Vlack in the home of her other daughter Clara Jane Van Vlack Tobey in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada.

My perplexing delima is that the Henry Van Vlack who married a Catherine Palen lived originally in Marysburg. I have a Land Petition given to Henry Van Vlack dated in Frontenac 9th August 1849. It states that Henry Van Vlack was given 100 acres due to him serving in the Company of Frontenac Militia in 1812. The land peititon was granted through the affidavit of a David Robbin.

What I find very interesting is that the names of this Henry's children (on down the line) are very similar to the names of my John A. Van Vlack. First son James Elias Van VLack is my gg grandfather and his first born was named John Henry Van Vlack.

I would love to connect my line of John A. Van Vlack with Henry Van Vlack/Catherine Palen's line.

Any information that anyone has would be so very much appreciated. Please contact me if you require anymore information, I would be more then willing to share.

Thanking you in advance for any help anyone can offer.

I went to High School (PECI) with Johan Van Vlack in Picton Ontario in 1972. I spent a lot of our teenage life at their home in Cressy (Waupoos area). Unfortuanately Johan passed away a couple years ago but she has family still in the county.

I have written a long 3-part exposition on the Canadian side of Ancestry message boards on my findings that the cousins Henry & Elizabeth Van Vlack, the children of John H. Van Vlack and Elizabeth Brinckerhoff and Henry & Elizabeth Van Vlack the children of Henry Van Vlack and Mary Sloot (not Schutt) have had their identities transposed in the Van Vlack Genealogy.

I would like to thank you so much for taking your time to answer my question. According to your overview of the transposition it makes sense. When I then add my family to the line it fits perfectly. The only way my family fits is according to your determination that the transposition happened. According to the naming pattern that was always followed my family line fits perfectly. I am going to accept your analysis which allows my line to fit into the Van Vlack line. I cannot express to you how very grateful I am that your took your time to answer me.

In your written exposition to clarify that the two Henry Van Vlack's identities were transposed. I would like to offer you further confirmation to support your findings. Below is a link that shows Henry Van Vlack from Marysburg was the Henry Van Vlack that fought in the War of 1812. This is a copy of a land grant that was given to Henry for his efforts.

Basically the land grant given to Henry Van Black [sic] Grants Henry 100 acres of land due to him serving as a Private in Flank Company of Frontenac Militia in the year 1812. The Land Petition was asked for on behalf of Henry by a David Robbin on 9th August 1849. If you copy the link and place it in your browser it will take you directly to the archive just place page 787 then page 788. You will be able to see a digitized copy of the land grant.

Again, just wanted to thank you for responding to my inquiry and show appreciation for your information.

here is the direct link, sorry but it comes out rather large.

Name: Vanblack [sic], Henry; Place: Marysburgh Year: 1849 Volume: 519 Bundle: V 5 Petition: 7 Microfilm: C-2949

Sandra,

I have tried many times to sort out John A.'s parentage and it certainly is confusing. I have been reading some of the posts here and can't follow all of it.

I think that John A. is probably the son of Henricus Van Vlack and Mary Vantine, but can find no proof.

I don't understand your statement that the names of Henry Van Vlack and Catherine Palen's children are similar to the names of John A.'s children. I must be reading your post incorrectly.

The other thing that I don't understand is a reply to your post that lists Marinus, the son of Henricus and Cornelia as the person who married Icy Root. Marinus, son of Henricus and Cornelia, was born about 1740. Marinus who married Icy Root was born about 1785. Can you shed any light on this for me?

I do agree that a lot of our problems with placing people come from Hendrik and Cornelia's line.

I'd appreciate any comments that you have that would help me get these things clear in my head.

So very nice to hear from you. Which line of the Van Vlack's are you connected to.

My John A. Van VLack's with Frist Wife unknown children were:

James Elias Van Vlack (married Cornelia Daville)
I believe that a Johan Mary Van VLack was also his child that shows up in the 1850 Census living with George Houck who would have been the brother of Madeline Houck who was John A. Van Vlack's second wife (marriage date Feb. 18, 1839) The only information I was able to obtain is limited to this 1850 Census) The 1830 Census in Rose, Wayne County New York shows John A. with two sons and three daughters. According to the obit of Mary Ann Van Vlack she came to Canada as a young child with her parents. Which indicates that John A's first wife would have died in Canada. I have found nothing on her.
John Barrett Van VLack (married 2nd Janet Currie)
Elizabeth Melvina Van VLack (married Samuel Speight)
Mary Ann Van VLack (married Thomas Wilds) Mary Ann's first child Elizabeth was born out of wedlock due to a rape she experienced. I have the news article where John A. Van Vlack sued the father and won the lawsuit.)

Children with Madeline Houck
Clara Jane Van VLack (married Warren Tobey)
Madeline Van Vlack (married
Darwin Lewis Van VLack (married Mary Sykes)

My James Elias Van Vlack's first child was John Henry Van Vlack, the name John Henry is also in the Henry Van Vlack/Catherine Palen line. The name Elias is also in this line. There are others as well which I find kind of ironic. Also, Elizabeth is a very strong name in my direct family which to me indicates a possibility that John A.'s mother could have been named Elizabeth as would his first wife's name.

I would love nothing more then to connect my family to the other Van Vlacks. Barbara Van Vlack and I worked for many years together on research. Which line of the Van Vlack's are you with.

I found evidence that Henry Van Vlack who married Catherine Palen fought in the war of 1812 and have a copy of a land grand that was given to him due to his involvement in this war. Making my Henry Van Vlack married to Polly Van Tyne not the Henry who fought in the war of 1812 because he would have passed. There was an article written by someone stating that there is a mix up on the two Henry's which I believe has a lot of credibility. I know that Polly Van Tyne would have remarried a Richard Mott and have tried to follow this line to see if I can connect my John A. Van Vlack but have been unsuccessful.

I do know that Van Vlack was the only spelling of the name and have never seen it spelt Van Vleck. Barbara Van Vlack and I did research for many years together and it was also her belief that my John A. Van Vlack was connected to the John A. Van Vlack line who married second Maria Teneyck.

I am probably sounding more confusing as ever so sorry for that.

My email is femfital@yahoo.com and I would love to share more information with you.

Take care for now

Sandra
