In your query dated 25 Apr 2005, you listed Aaron Mastin md Rebecca Feeley, ca 1790, and their children. My question is regarding the daughter Catherine. I have tried to find parents of Catherine Mastin which I have listed her birthdate as 1794 (after subtracting her age from the 1851 Census.) She married (no date but I estimate around 1820) Daniel Macdonald who was born in New Brunswick, Canada.

I'm also seeking parents of Rachel Mastin who md 11 Oct 1843 Jonas Trumpour in Hallowell, Prince Edward Co. Also,
Susan Mastin who md 16 Feb 1836 Gilbert Trumpour in Hallowell.

hI Folks, can I join in too? I am searching for Cornelius Mastin and his family, who aquired land in Tyendinaga.
circa late 1840's. I think Aaron AND Peter and Cornelius
were possibly brothers. They were in Hallowell
circa 1808. but info is so hard to come by. Some went down to Michgan, and so we lose track of them.
Susan may have been their sister,

Hi: I wish if could provide answers for you but, I too, am still seeking parents of Catherine Mastin who married Daniel McDonald before 1815 and I assume it would be in Prince Edward Co. and probably Hallowell Twp. The only question is,did Daniel and Catherine marry in Queen Co., New Brunswick before they came to Prince Edward Co., Ontario. I believe that they were married in Prince Edward Co. but as they say "no truth without proof". I'm still looking for proof. If I come across more info, I will let you know. Keep searching!

I am trying to sort out who is Peter Mastin. Given the timing, he may have been related to my family which settled in Sullivan County. Does anyone know who Peter's (or Aaron) parents are and when they were born? If I have that I can begin to sort things out. Thanks I am especially curious as we just moved from Michigan to Ontario (so we did the immigration thing in the reverse direction).

Hello, I am doing the same,, "searching" But, just in the last couple of weeks ,,I have aquired a cert.of marriage, It shows Cornelius Mastin, widower,--age 54, of Hallowell , ont. -2nd wife - Hannah Lowry. widow.-- oct. 25th,1848.. Napanee Ont.
It states that his father was Peter Mastin and mother was
Hannah Nelson.
I am pretty sure that Cornelius is my long lost G.G grandfather Strange , your name is "Susan,," as that name
passed thru the family.
I've been told there were 7 brothers, who immigrated to Can ,,before 1800. Keep in touch

Thanks. Very interesting. I'll write more details tomorrow - but my daughter and I just discovered some of the links...much more complicated than we expected. Basically there are numerous relatives who immigrated to Canada as Empire Loyalists. This adds another piece - since the Peter Mastin we have is Peter Minard Mastin and is married to Anna Bowerman. Peter Minard Mastin was born in NY. Then there is a Rebecca Mastin who was married to Ichabod Bowerman (born in Dutchess County, NY). Rebecca Mastin is the daughter of Aart Mastin and Rebecca Viele (both of NY). I haven't been able to find the parents of Peter Minard Mastin and would appreciate help there.

Here are some additional details:

The Peter Minard Masten I have - died on April 28, 1878 in Ontario, He married Anna Bowerman (born Sept. 14, 1805, died around 1873). They had thirteen children born between 1822 and 1845. One was Israel Bowerman Masten (b. 22 Jan. 1822 in Picton, PE County, ON). Israel married Mary Todd who was born in Ontario and had a son Peter Lockwood Masten (b. in Lavender, ON, died July 22, 1918 at the age of 58).

Israel Bowerman (b. July 16, 1777 in NY) married Anne Terwilliger (b. June 29, 1784 in Ulster County, NY). They moved to Ontario and Anne died in Dunedin in Simcoe County, ON on Nov. 23, 1868. Anna Bowerman (b. Sept. 14, 1805) was their daughter. She married Peter Minard Mastin and had 13 children between 1822 and 1845. All appear to be born in Ontario.

So it appears that Israel Bowerman, along with his brother Ichabod (who was married to Rebecca Mastin), Evert Terwilliger (b. 1750 in New Paltz, NY and married to Sarah Masten) all immigrated to Ontario, I assume as United Empire Loyalists.

So this leaves me with other questions. Who is the Aaron Mastin who was married to Rebecca Feeley (around 1790). Apparently they had eight children. Barued Masten (b. ~1799) married Electa Knapp (born 1809). Electa Masten is listed as age 45 in the 1851 Census of PE County (p. 10). Who are the parents of Aaron Masten and Rebecca Feeley?

Who is the Peter Masten that was married to Nettie Bowerman? They had a son Jonathan.

And were do Joseph, Judah, and Benjamin Bowerman fit into the picture (in Prince Edward County)?

Seems like the more questions I answer, the more questions I have.

Susan

P.S. The irony is that I am the first and only Susan Masten in my family (all the way back to Jan Masten who came over from England) - at least among all my direct ancestors. Interesting that it is a common name among the Mastins in Canada.

Figured something out....(found on Ancestry.com)
Ezekial Masten (b. 1725, parents Johannes Masten and Maria Wels) married Gertryd Schoonmaker in Kingston, NY on October 12, 1751.
Their son Johannes Masten was married to Rachel Schoonmaker.
Johannes and Rachel had a son Peter Masten (b. 7 July 1799 in Kingston NY).
Peter married Hanna Nelson and had a son Cornelius Masten

Can this be the Peter listed in Hallowell Twp in 1808? Would mean he would be deeded land at 8 yrs old? His parents Johannes and Rachel Mastin would have to have immigrated to Canada, but why isn't Johannes on the list of land owners in 1808?

So many questions, so few answers.

Slow down,, slow down,, all Mastins are not all the same family. Just as all Smiths are not all the same family.
What was your father's and your grandfather's surname. Go by who they were and work from there . Peter, Aaron and Cornelius 1908 Hallowell. I 've read that Peter came back from the war ,badly tortured and mentally unstable. His son Cornelius looked after him. But , I have searched for my
Cornelius at least 6 or 7 years. It doesn't happen in a few days . . You may strike it lucky tho.

I know I should slow down - but in part my motivation in trying to sort out some of this was a promise I made a few years ago and then finding out that the person to whom I made the promise is in advanced stages of cancer....I want to be able to at least answer some questions. Actually, we know our family history quite well. My grandfather had our genealogy very carefully researched before he died in 1949. I have been able to collaborate most of it using Census, Cemetery, Baptism records and newspaper articles that I can find on the web, on Ancestry.com, or have obtained from a family member who has been researching the Masten family for decades.
The Mastins in Ontario aren't a direct relation - but they are definitely of the same clan from NY. Here's my family tree:
Jan Masten (b 1628)
Cornelius Masten (b. 1650 Kingston)
Johannes Masten (b. 1677 - first borne son of Cornelius Masten and Elizabeth Aersten)
Jan (John) Masten (b. 1715 - son of Johannes Masten and Maria Marytjen Wels)
Johannes Masten (b. 1735 in Kingston - son of Jan Masten and Marytjen Van Keuren)
Jacob Masten (b. 1760 son of Johannes Masten and Madleen Swart)
Martinus Masten (b. 1795 in Wurtsburo, NY, son of Jacob Masten and Catherine Helm)
Theodore V. Masten (b. 1831, son of Martinus Masten and Nancy Hosier)
Seymour Langton Masten (b. Nov. 16, 1879, son of Theodore V. Masten and Mary Horton)
William Gilbert Masten (b. Jan. 12, 1925, son of Seymour Masten and Louaine Doty)
Susan Masten (b. 1957, dau. of William and Antonina Nadwodny).

The Rebecca Mastin (b. 1771) who married Ichabod Bowerman (b 1767, d. 1815 in Hallowell, ON) is the daughter of Aert Masten (b. 1745 in Kingston) who married Rebecca Viele in Poughkeepsie, NY. Aert Masten was the brother of my ancestor, Johannes Masten (b. 1735 in Kingston).

The Sarah Masten that married Evert Terwilliger and I believe immigrated to Ontario (with the Bowermans, Anne Terwilliger, and some Mastins) is the daughter of Johannes Masten and Madleen Swart. I am a direct descendent of Johannes Masten (b. 1735 in Kingston, NY).

Now the Peter I mentioned can't be the same Peter you mentioned, because I have Peter born in 1799, after the Rev. War and in Canada before the Civil War. Unless he was in the War of 1812?
