Researching John and William D. McLean of Riceville, South Plantagenet Township. John McLean had a brother Alex McLean who was possibly postmaster, storekeeper there. John McLean's wife was a Miss Pickering who died 28 May 1891 Oliver Township ON and was buried at "Castleman" which I take to be Casselman. He may have married a second time and lost his second wife in 1893. John McLean died in California, possibly St Gabriel, 27 May 1896 age 57.

William D. McLean was born 29 May 1852 according to 1901 Census and died 26 August 1920 age 68 at Murillo, Thunder Bay District Ontario. His wife was Rachel Esther Rees or Reece possibly of Paisley Ontario who died in 1937. William D. McLean was a nephew of John McLean. William had a brother A.D. McLean living in Goderich ON in 1892. The 1901 Oliver Township census also listed the father of William D. McLean as Alexander McLean b. 15 Feb 1830 but I don't know when and where he died, possibly 1910. I wonder if this Alexander was the postmaster, storekeeper in Riceville? I am not related to these families. Can anyone shed any light on where and when John and William D. were born or baptized, or where they came from in Scotland?

In my notes I have Alexander McLean coming from Inverness Count, Ross-shire, Scotland. Married Amelia Metcalfe Nov. 27, 1856. He came to Canada in 1851. I also have some infromation on John McLean. There are 2 McLean stones in the Riceville Baptish Church Cemetery.

There is mention of Alexander McLean in the History of Argenteuil and Prescott Book under Riceville.

Hope that this will be of some help.

Hello. I am the great grand-daughter of William D. McLean. Yes, he did pass away in Murillo, near Thunder Bay, ON, where I currently reside. He was born in Glengarry, Ontario, Canada on May 29, 1852. I wish I knew where his father came from in Scotland. William was a qualified teacher, but held 15-20 different jobs in his lifetime according to my mother, so he may have been the storekeeper/postmaster in Riceville. He moved a lot and owned property in Murillo, ON. There is a street named after him there to this day.

Alexander McLean's residence in Alhambra, CA was listed as 414 and 416 West Grand Ave. in 1910. In 1905, it was 240 N. Wilson St. (which became Atlantic Ave. in 1930). The residence, Diamond Castle, was built by the carpenter, Alexander McLean. You can see pictures of it on the Internet. A miniature, "pygmy castle" was also a major tourist attraction and was featured on postcards.

A street in Alhambra (McLean Ave.) and one in Murillo (McLean St.) were named after him

His wife was Rachel Esther Rees, not Reece. She was born in McGillivray, North Middlesex County, Ontario on May 15, 1868. She was a photographer/calendar/poster girl and her mother was from Wales. She had dark brown curly hair and blue eyes and was married at the age of 17 to William on Oct. 8, 1885 in Paisley, Bruce, Ontario, Canada. They then emigrated to San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California in 1902. She passed away in 1937 in Thunder Bay, ON. They had 8 children. I can name them if you'd like.

I hope this helps.
