my direct ancestors were a Robert Newton (born 1829, Plantagenent) and Ellen Kinscella (born Cumberland Twsp). she died at 44 (8 Sept 1880) of diptheria and he on 27 March 1906 and both were buried at Dales Cemetery. he farmed in Navaan. several of his daughters moved to Manitoba and i know much of their lives. 3 children remained in the Russel (Robert, Elizabeth and Samuel) area and married into the Wylie and Chapman families there. Son Samuel Newton did not marry to my knowledege. i have not been able to learn anything about the Newtons or Kinscellas families. all suggestions on books, newspapers and other potential sources where i may find mentions of the family would be appreciated.

Oh my gosh. Thanks so much! I have much of what you've posted but it took me months....well actually years...to put together. how did you do that all so fast? wow. I can't wait to match it against my records. One point i do see is that the 7 children you list as children of Robert Newton and Mary Kerinan are actually, acording to my research, children of Robert Newton and Ellen Kinsella (sometimes spelled Kinscella). And you found Robert's 1832 birth date...something i don't have.... where did you find that?

Wow. this is wonderful. i will certainly go thru each tidbit to add to my research. thanks so much.
I've always wondered when my grandmother's family came to Canada because the earliest i've found is that my Robert Newton was born in N. Plantagenent in 1832 and Ellen Kinsella/Kinscella was born in Cumberland, 1844. Whether their parents had just arrived in Canada or were born in Canada I may never know. I think the work digging the canal attracted many Irish to the area around the 1820's and some likely stayed in the area after the work was done. maybe that's my story? thanks so much for taking the time to help me and my family.

North Plantagenet.....
This township, located in the extreme north-west of Prescott County, is bounded on the north by the Ottawa, east by Alfred, south by South Plantagenet, and west by Russell County. The Nation River, a stream of considerable size-especially in the spring, when a large number of logs are floated down it-enters it near the south-eastern angle of the Township, and passing diagonally across it, flows into the Ottawa about three-fourths of the distance from the eastern to the western boundary. The land bordering this river is mostly level, and, indeed, this is the physical aspect of the greater part of the land in the Township. Though the soil, evidently, is not as strong as it is in some other parts of the County, many of the inhabitants have followed farming successfully, and have all the temporal comforts generally found among this class. (a description from 1896)

Yes, I can see you have much more knowledge than I do at researching genealogy. I volunteer at our local genealogy centre and I've always been more than impressed by how helpful 'genealogy' people are. thanks.
