St. Paul's Presbyterian Church Records

I am trying to find the marriage record for Hugh J. McMillan and Eliza Thompson who were married abt 1886 probably in a Presbyterian church in the greater Hawkesbury area. Census records indicate they (the McMillan's at least) were Presbyterian and lived in that area. The only Presbyterian church I have found in this area is St. Paul's. (I have searched all the online records with Ancestry, etc. and could not find the marriage record).

It appears that St. Paul's was founded around 1800 but had a number of changes that might have separated the records. It is confusing to me, but it looks like those after 1892 are associated with St. Paul's in Hawkesbury and are archived in the Toronto Presbyterian Archives. The records prior to 1892, which I am interested in, either don't exist or are with another Presbyterian church. I thought they might be with St. Paul's in L'Orignal, since the church history suggests a connection at one point in time, but when I called there the answering machine message was in French, which I don't speak.

Can anyone set me straight on where the church records might be, or point me in the right direction?

Thank you,
Dan Harvey

See this discussion, I think it will contain the answer to your question.

FYI I also am searching for a marriage record from that church. I live in Toronto, only about 4 miles from where the Presbyterian church archives are physically located, and I will probably visit there later this month to try and find my record of interest. Let me know if you are still seeking the McMillan-Thompson 1886 record, if so, I'll try and get it for you while I am there.

As far as I can determine, the Presbyterian Church (Canada) records are not accessible online, one has to physically visit the archive site, or request that the church look up the record for you.

Here's a link to the church's archive website:

Hi, Civil Marriage Registration began in Ontario in 1869 -
Provincial Archive of Ontario - May hold Registrations of Marriage .
Perhaps contacting them - would be helpful - they can advise if there was a Marriage Registration.

Perhaps Helpful:

Presbyterian (see United)

This archives holds the records only for those Presbyterian churches which did not join with other churches & denominations to form the United Church in 1925. It is important to know whether the early Presbyterian Church you are interested in is still a Presbyterian Church today.

Hi Michael and sstanger1,
Thanks for responding to this post. I am still searching for the marriage record for this couple (g-grandparents).

I think I stumbled onto the family of Eliza Thompson about a year ago through a baptismal record found by the Anglican Archives in Toronto for Eliza Levina Thompson b. 24 Nov 1867 in Haliburton, Ont. in St. George's Anglican church in Haliburton. The parents were Richard Thompson and Martha Ann Rodgers. I have found quite a bit on this family but nothing on Eliza after the 1881 census where she was still living with the family in the Haliburton area (the 1891 cenus shows the family in Saskatchewan). My g-grandmother, Eliza Lavinia Thompson, was born Nov 1867/68 in Ontario so this looks like a good match, hopefully. She died Nov 1906 in Devils LK, North Dakota with vertually nothing known about her Thompson family. Hugh McMillan remarried several times after that and eventually disappeared.

The Anglican Archives in Toronto did look for a marriage record for Hugh McMillan and Eliza Thompson in both St. George’s Anglican in Haliburton (1886-1896) and St. Paul’s Anglican in Minden ( 1886-1900 ) but didn't find anything. I think the search should have started in 1884 but I haven't asked about that yet. I also had the Anglican Archives in Regina, Saskatchewan look for a marriage record but nothing there either.

Bottom line is I still don't know where or when they were married. So, Michael, if you are willing to look in the Presbyterian Archives I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks again for your everyone's interest and help
Dan
