Hullo, you wrote to me a long long time ago and provided me with some wonderful info abt James Cramond Gunn / Eliza Mordaunt Cortenay Shairp England regarding their time in Peterborough. Sadly I am still researching this line as I cannot find the birth of Eliza's first child - Henry Mordaunt Cramond Gunn b. circa 1855. He was a 'remittance man' who caused havoc in NZ and Aus. Do you have anything that may help which you would be willing to share. When Henry was interviewed after a series of arrests, he always stated that he came from Canada. He apparently had an 'American accent'. Henry went by many names which leads me to believe he may have used the identity of one of his Canadian relatives. Anything you can think of would help. TIA Chris

Nothing every dies on these genealogy boards, does it, lol?
Hi again. I forgot what I originially sent you, and haven't looked at my own things for several years, but this is what I have on the family of Eliza Mordaunt Courtenay Shairp/Gunn:
Her parents were Charlotte Emilia Shairp who m. her cousin, Alexander Mordaunt Shairp 15 Jan 1834 in St. John's Anglican Church, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. They had 5 children:
1. Henry Easton b. 7 Dec 1835 in Peterborough and may have died young.
2. Stephen Alexander Bassett b. 31 July 1836, d. 23 May 1893
3. Francis Mordaunt b.5 June 1842 in Co. Donegal, Ireland
4. Charles, died in infancy
5. Eliza Mordaunt Courtenay, likely b. in Ireland or England bet 1843 and 1848

Alexander and Charlotte Emilia couldn't make a go of it i Canada - they were poor and he had a drinking problem. He returned to England in 1839 and was recommissioned into the Royal Navy. Emilia returned later between 1839 and 1842 and she and Alexander lived in Co. Donegal Ireland where he was stationed. He died in 1848 when his naval vessel sank off the coast of Africa and I believe Charlotte Emilia then moved back to England.

Their youngest child, Eliza, married James Cramond Gunn 21 December 1852 in St. Martin's in the Field, Westminster, London and I think they had 4 children, although my documentation is sketchy. The first was the child you are interested in, Henry Mordaunt, and I have him born in 1853. I assume he would have been born in England because his birth was within a year of their marriage. Beyond that, my notes are bare. If I can locate something that confirms this, I'll let you know but I can't find the source info for the wedding at the moment. I hope this helps a little as I'm quite sure he wasn't born in Canada.
I also have a second marriage for Eliza - on 15 Feb 1869 she married Walter Blundell but I don't know where I got this information as it's not sourced either. My research was so sloppy when I started researching so many years ago so I don't know where they were married.
Thanks for the query - it reminds me that I should get working on this again.
Cheers.

Hi, sorry about the late reply again!! Other things keep getting in the way of my beloved genealogy. Your information is a fantastic help and is so much appreciated. Still trying to find Henry M C Gunn but that will keep me busy for years I predict. If I ever find him I will let you know. Your generosity with the information is very much appreciated. Regards Chris.

Is this Alexander Sharpe related to Alex Sharpe, The Lunge Hunter? He was my great, great grandfather.

Hi Katy - No, these are not the same Alexanders, although there are so many Alexanders in this family tree that I can understand your confusion. They are distantly related though. Whose child and grandchild are you? I have most of your Alexander's children in my family tree but not his grandchildren and great grandchildren and I would be pleased to send you what I have. Also, where are you located? If you are in the Peterborough area, I have several contacts there with most of what you would want to know. I descended from the brother of your Alexander so that probably makes us third or fourth cousins! I do have all the ancestors of your Alexander if you would like that information. It goes all the way back to England and Scotland with just a few holes in the information. If you prefer, we can communicate off-line - my e-mail is arcona@eastlink.ca.
