I am looking for information on my Great Great Grandfather John Cleary... Did he marry twice???

He married my great great Grandmother Mary Ann O'Keefe (Keefe/Keef) January 7, 1846 at St. Mary's RC Church, Lindsay, Ontario...John Cleary would have been 38 years old and Mary Ann O'Keefe would have been 23-25 years old at the time of the marriage...

So I am wondering if John Cleary was married prior to this marriage...as he was 38 years old... He possibly was married prior....

The info I have on John Cleary:

In 1825 John Cleary along with his family emigrated from Ireland...Setting Sail on May 8, 1825 off the Cove of Cork and arrived in Quebec...overland to Peterborough....Through the Peter Robinson Settlement...

This family was sponsored by Lord Doneraile... They were from Doneraile, Cork, Ireland...

William Cleary and Mary Maloney parents...
children: Timothy 20, John 17, Mary Ann 15, Johannah 12, William 10, Catherine 3 (Died at Sea)

They had a few more children here: Ellen abt 1826, Catherine 1827, Michael 1828

This family settled in Otonabee Township...Con 10 Lot 23 w 1/2 100 acres... This land passed to William Cleary Jr...he received the patent in 1847 as his father William Cleary Sr. had died...

John Cleary and the rest of the Cleary's living in Duoro Twp... While younger brother William Cleary continued living in Ontonabee....was John Cleary married then????

In 1847 John Cleary married Mary Ann O'Keefe and moved to Ops Twp... Mary Ann's family of O'Keefe's were living near Keene at the time???
By the 1871 Census John Cleary and Mary Ann O'Keefe are in the Town of Lindsay.. with children...

If you have any info on this family of Cleary's and who they married etc... I'd love to trade info....Some names married and connected to the Cleary's were:
Coughlin, Crough, Morrison, Bishop, Babcock, O'Rielly, O'Brien, Dougherty, Doherty, Moran, O'Keefe, Keefe, Keef...

Hi Gail - long time no talk. The John Cleary that lived in Duoro Twp, was he a brother or something to William of Otonabee? John, Wm & Mary's son b c 1808 was killed in 1835 by an neighbour (Cooper) while in fight with my James Fraser (brother in law)whom he was helping to build a house. I have a copy of the inquest document telling everyone involved when to appear at James' home in Otonabee.

Hi, Just a thought - A first marriage for a Male - is not unreasonable - at age 38.
Work - establishing self - to be able to support a wife and children - or Just not finding the right person - Some men may be reluctant to marry.

The Church records - for the marriage of John CLEARY & Mary O'KEEFE - may show the previous marital status of both.

Hi Gail -- I have more info on the John Cleary whose parents are William Cleary & Mary Molony & brother to my gr gr grandmother Johanna Cleary (Fraser). As I said previously my John Cleary was killed in 1835 leaving 2 daughters Mary Anne & Helen. His wife was Ellen Fitzgerald. I received this info from Sister Theresa Cleary whom I've know for many years & is a gr gr (I think) granddaughter of William & Mary Cleary.

I know that there was another John Cleary who did live in Ops but he lived after 1835 so is not ours. I don't know anything about this 2nd John Cleary. Very confusing I know.

I have the church marriage record for this couple - it's available through FamilySearch, It states, "After two publications of Bans, no impediment discovered." It's possible that he was a widower with no children or that his children from his first marriage were old enough by 1861 to have left the house. If he was married shortly after he arrived in Canada (~1825) and proceeded to have children, his first born would be in their early 20s by 1850 when he started a family with Mary O'Keefe.

I have as children:
Michael - 1850 from 1861 Census
John - 1852 from 1861 Census
Johanna (Hannah) - 1857 from 1861 Census
Catherine - 1859 from 1861 Census
Jeremiah - 1860 from 1861 Census
Jessy - 1863 from 1881 Census
Mary - 1865 from 1881 Census

Catherine is my 2nd Great-Grandmother. She died in Lima, NY in 1925.
Mary married John Chatterton and died in Chicago in 1947.
Johanna married Thomas Brady and died in Seneca Falls, NY in 1914.

Hi BR Reilly;

Just a question. Whose marriage record have you got? John & Ellen Fitzgerald, my ancestor, or John Cleary & Mary O'Keefe? Sorry - a bit confused.

According to Gail Forsyth's research, John Cleary's parents were William Cleary and Mary Malony. I do not have anything on Mary O'Keefe. Their marriage record contains the following witnesses:

John Walker and Catherine Cleary
