I am looking for the the family of Matthew Scully born about 1816 Ireland and his wife Bridget Macaulay born abt 1816 Ireland. Not sure if they married in Ireland or in the States. From the States came to Ontario. Had the following children

Mary...born in USA approximately 1845

Catherine....born Ontario appr 1848

Anne.....born Ontario appr 1850

Matthew....born Ontario appr 1852

Patrick.... born Ontario appr 1854 died 1930 Peterborough

I have Patrick and his family and all his children and their marriages. I can find nothing on Patrick's brothers and sisters.

Any help would be appreciated

1861 census they are all in Peterborough County.
1871 census only Matthew and Patrick and still with parents in Peterborough.

1881 census Peterborough Duoro
SCULLEY
Matthew, 62, Ireland,
Bridget, 62, Ireland
Patrick, 26, Ontario
John, 16,Ont
McMurry, Matthew, 11, Ont
There are no relationships on this census so don't know who John is.

1891 census Duoro Peterborough
SCULLEY
Mathew, 70, Ireland, widowed
McMurry, Daniel, 47, widowed, b Ont
McMurry, Matthew, 19, Ont, grandson

So one of the daughter's married Daniel McMurry.

1881 census on www.familysearch.org

Daniel McMurry, 34, widower, labourer and a Garrett McMurray, aged 7 are living with an Ann McMurry, 67, and her family.

1871 census Peterborough
McMURRY
Matthew, 27
Catherine, 24
Matthew, 2.
I think this could be Catherine Scully, d/o of Matthew & Bridget.
Did not find a death for Catherine.
Did not find marriages for either Garrett or Matthew with mother Catherine Scully.
Did find this.
Marriage:
Catherine McMurry, 24, born and living Duoro, d/o Garrett McMurry and Ann Scully married John Allen, 26,30 Feb 1882 Duoro.
There are lots of McMurrys and Scullys in Peterborough County.

Thank you so much for all the information. It gives me some clues to start to try to find births and deaths. You are correct there are a lot of Scullys and McMurrays and it is difficult to find out which ones are mine LOl. I have to like banging my head on walls cause this family is giving me a headache.

It is much appreciated

Pam

Hey Pam,

I am the daughter of one of Patrick Scully's grandchildren. I have been attempting to track Matthew Scully back to Ireland, but have had no luck at all. Have you been able to find anything that can help us out?

I don't know if it will help you at all, but Matthew Scully married a Bridget Kilcauly (not sure on the spelling, haven't got my papers here in the UK right now). That is the name showing on the 1851 census, and then later, she is listed as Bridget Scully.

Any information you can give us will help. Thanks!

Heather

Hi Heather

I will dig out my file on the Scully's and copy what I have for you. I have never been able to trace Matthew in Ireland. I still look but nothing yet. My grandmother's sister married a Scully. Her last name was Courneyea. You can contact me at pmjajb@gmail.com. I think it will be easier to send files that way. I did find out that the censuses for Ireland up to 1901 were destroyed and reused during the first world war due to a paper shortage which makes finding him really hard. I will look forward to hearing from you

Pam

Surnames: Scully, Kilcauley, Allen
Hey Pam.

My father is a Scully from Matthew's line. He is William's son, son of Patrick. There was recently a book published about the Allen Side and it said that Mary was actually born in Douro, and not in the States, though the records I have seen say otherwise. So, I 'm not sure where she got her her info on that. I am still struggling to locate anything on Matthew and any further back in Ireland. Though, through the book, I have learned that Matthew came over via the 1846 immigration to Canada and at the time, he was single. So, he must have met and married Bridget KILCAULEY (can't remember the actual spelling, sorry) after he landed. I hope this helps a bit. If you find anything more out, please let me know. I am not having much luck on my end.

Thanks.
