1906 - Charles William Graham and Emma/Emily Mabel McLean Graham

I didn't find anyone I thought was them in the 1906 Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta census records. Of course they could have been using different names.

I'll let you know the results of my other searches: 1911 Canada census; 1916 Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta census; 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 US census; once I feel I am done with them.

Since they _may_ have worked in vaudeville, on the stage, they may also have taken on stage/theatrical names and therefore not locatable by their original names.
In looking at the birth dates again, it dawned on me that Charles was 27 years older than Emma (Emily.) He may have passed away shortly after they placed the children in orphanage in Winnipeg. Just a thought . . .

Thank you for the birth dates. I will see if I can find anything on them. Unfortunately Graham and "Charles William" are common enough names. Too bad he wasn't named "Zaphod Beeblebrox." :-)

By the way, did you also post a message about them in the message boards (General and others) for Manitoba? I checked and saw some messages about your McLean family line on the Manitoba > General; Manitoba > Winnipeg; and Manitoba > Interlake message boards.

I also scanned/looked through Manitoba message boards for the surname Graham. None of the messages seem to be about your Charles William Graham.

I'll let you know if I find anything that seems to be for your Charles William Graham and wife Emma (Emily) Mabel McLean Graham.

Best wishes

Charles William Graham was born on 25 Sep 1850 and Emily (Emma) Mabel McLean Graham was born on 30 Dec 1877. I have checked the US census but there are so many names, I also checked historical sites about Vaudeville but I cannot find them either. I had not given up, eventually I will get the info I need to complete the mystery. Many members of my family are curious to know also, any assistance that you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the clarification.

Without knowing at least the birth years for both Charles William Graham and Emma McLean, it may be hard to determine any census record for them, either in Canada or the USA. So, obtaining a copy of their Manitoba marriage record may lead to their birth dates. See my reply with the link to the Manitoba Vital Records database.

Also, if they did "go on the state" in vaudeville, their stage names may not have been the same as their actual names. Plus, they could also have taken on other names and used them in records that may exist, including census records.

I checked the Canadian census records for 1911 for them and did not find anything for anyone I think may have been them. The 1911 Canada census is the most recent that is available for searching. Canadian law does not allow the release of census records until after 100 years have passed.

I'll check US census records, too, but without at least a birth year for each of them, determining if a census record is for them or not will be a challenge. US census records are available up through 1940.

I'll come back and post what I find (or don't find) regarding US census records for them.

There is no tombstone for Mrs. William Carpenter in the Dublin Roman Catholic cemetery (St. Patricks). Check out the website Canada Cemetery Genweb Project, click on Ontario then Perth County. Scroll down and select St Patrick's Church/Dublin RC Cemetery. All tombstones for this cemetery have been photographed and posted. There are many other Carpenters buried there.

I did find a Manitoba provincial database with marriage records older than 80 years.

In that database I found the record of the marriage of a Charlies William Graham and Emma McLean, 26 Feb 1896, married at South Norfolk, Manitoba.

This is the link to the home page for the Manitoba Vital Statistics Agency Genealogy Searches for Unrestricted Records:
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
Read the information there.

In the search boxes farther down that page, select "Marriages" and enter the last name "Graham" and "Charles William" in the proper boxes and click on the Search button.

Through the link giving the marriage record basics, you can order (pay for) the more complete marriage license/registration information. With luck the information will include the names of the parents of both Charles and Emma and the birth dates of the bridal couple.

It looks like each record ordered will cost $12.00 Canadian. This is the link to the order form, FYI:
http://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/GenealogyRequest.php

It looks like the request, with payment info (credit cards accepted) must be sent by traditional mail.

With luck the info on the marriage record for Charles William Graham and Emma McLean will lead you to more sources of info.

Best wishes
So here are the professions/occupations all in one place.

1876 & 1902 sure look like GRASSI, with the "i" dotted as the very last letter.

1891 is Grain Weigher.

1901 is Merchant.

1911 is Grocer.

Looking at the 1901 and 1911 census, it does show that your William G SMYTH lived very close to the widow Mary KING (nee SMITH). Their birth months from the 1911 census match the 1901 census, although the years are off.

1901 - Mary KING (household 70) and possibly her father Henry SMITH (69). Note the CUDMORE family at household 72.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=55523&h...

1901 - William SMITH (household 90). WHEATLEY family is household 85.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/View.jsp?id=55525&h...

1911 - William G and Mary SMYTH (302) with CUDMORE (297) and WHEATLEY (296) families above.
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/View.jsp?id=94924&amp...

1911 Census original image says that William immigrated in 1866 and it looks like he is a grocer?
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=9492...

The marriage below has transcribed him as a glass dealer!

http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/huron02.htm
Huron Co., 1902

#008874-02 (Huron Co): William George SMYTH, 50, widower, glass dealer, Tyrone Ireland, Clinton, s/o Robert SMYTH & Sarah McINTYRE, married Mary Ann KING, widow, London,Clinton, d/o Henry SMITH & Mary BORREY?, witnesses were Jennie ROSS & Elizabeth Jane STEWART, both of Cinton, 27 March 1902 at Clinton.

I had to remove some extraneous family members from my second image to get everything to fit.

Thanks for your hard work, talbotrail!

Henry Smith is indeed Mary King (nee Smith)'s father.

I am always amused at how folks lied about their ages back in the day... trimming off a little here and a little there, trying to be younger.

William G Smyth looks to have been a jack of all trades, all starting with "G." I think glass dealer is just a transcription error, but I believe grocer, and grain weigher. The marriage records still look like they say "Grass Dealer" or "Grassi Dealer" to me.

I am trying to merge 2 slightly different William George Smyth's in my family tree. "Both" were born in Ireland between 1848-1850, both emigrated to southern Ontario Canada where they married.

The first marriage was to Mary Robinson in 1877. Mary died in 1893. Mary's death record says "Wife of William Smyth" and her grave marker says "Wife of WG Smyth." William's parents were listed as James & Mary Smith on this marriage record. His occupation looks something like "Grass Dealer."

The second marriage was in 1902 to Mary Anne Smith. William's parents are listed as Robert Smyth & Sarah McIntyre (the same parents as my Great Great Grandfather Hugh Smyth.) His occupation also looks like "Grass Dealer."

The only thing separating these Williams is the parents' names on the marriage records. Otherwise, everything points to them being the same individual.

Why would someone put down the wrong names as parents on a marriage record?

What was William's occupation??

Jemima Ward and Colin McLean

Hello
Jemima Ward and Colin McLean are my Great Great Grandparents, their daughter Emma McLean (my Great Grandmother) married Charles William Graham. All records that I can find is that they had five children: Hugh, Charles Jr, Hattie, Mary and Ruby. My Grandmother is their daughter Mary Georgina Graham. Charles Jr died at a very young age. My Grandmother was born 23 Jun 1902 and died 21 Dec 1885 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
My grandmother told her children (12 of them), that her parents put her and her three living siblings (Hugh, Hattie and Ruby) in an orphanage in Winnipeg just after my Great Aunt Ruby was born in 1903. Only my Aunt Ruby was adopted as a baby, the other three were never adopted. It was Hugh who kept in contact with his sisters and that is how my family has stayed connected. thank goodness for him. However no one seems to know what happened to Emily and Charles? We were told them immigrated to the USA and joined Vaudeville but I cannot find any record of this or any records of their death or where they lived after 1903. Would you happened to have any information that you could shared? It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks . My Grandmother married John Lendrum Doak and they had 12 kids, my mom Shirley was the 10 th child, there were 8 boys and 4 girls.

There were also McCallums born in Scotland, that I'm not related to. now the spelling varies on census records that i have found, most notably from McCollum, McCallum and McCallam
