I am looking for information about James Atkinson who came to Ontario, (Perth area I think) with a wife from Ireland around 1850. I am looking for the name of his wife who died around 1860. They had a son also named James. James Atkinson remarried Elizabeth McLaughlin. I am looking for the name of his first wife. Thank you

Were they Irish Catholic? Check Hibbert Township, Perth 1901 census and others for James, Elizabeth, Joseph, Mary, William, Catharine and the OCFA for burials at St Columban Roman Catholic cemetery.

Thank you, I check with those names. They had a son born in 1854, James August Atkinson. I can't find a birth record for him either.

possibles:
A james age 16, born 1855 is shown in Hibbert in the LDS with father James and brothers Thomas 14 and John 8.
See also possible in 1881 census with wife Ellen and daughter Ellen Agusta.
Wild guess is this from St Columbans: James ATKINSON St Columban parent mentioned at bap/birth of James 13 Aug 1854 / / 1 Aug 1854 approx. born 1 Aug 1854. married to Judith Casey. Might Judith Casey be the first wife you are looking for?

From the history book of Hibbert Township titled: From Scotch Broth to Irish Stew....... A History of Hibbert Township 1846-1996
on page 344 for Lot 25 Con 5 of Hibbert Township
Captain James Atkinson, his wife Catherine (Conlin) and their seven year old son James came to Canada in 1837 from County Longford, Ireland. They settled here in 1852. And James died here in 1902. He had served as township councillor and had been deputy reeve in 1866. James's son William took possession of the property in 1928 but from the early 1930's rented it out. The second James Atkinson was married twice, first to Julia Casey, and after her death to Elizabeth McLaughlin, who came from Athlone in Simcoe County. There were four children in his first family, James, Thomas, John and Bridget, who when she was three years old was scalded to death after she pulled boiling water off the stove. There were five more children after James' second marriage: Joseph, Mary, William, Frank and Catherine (married John Shea). Frank drowned in a creek on their farm in the spring floods when he was nine years old.
(please note that Lot histories were written by many individuals and no references were noted in the text.)
