Searching for information on paternity of John Thomas Welsh.
According to U.S. draft and census records, John was born 19 Apr 1874 at Palmerston, Perth, Ontario and was of Scottish, Protestant ancestry.

Do you have any other information on John - names of siblings, date of emigration to the U.S., or have you found him in the Social Security Death Index?

I can find only two possibilities in the 1881 census that are close in age, both are a year younger than your John:
John WELSH, age 6, parents John WELSH & Mary née FORREST, living in Stratford, Perth county
and
John WELSH, age 6, parents John & Ann WELSH, living in Mornington, Perth county

Both families are Scottish and Presbyterian.

The first John was born 1 May 1875 in Stratford. He’s in the 1891 but not the 1901 census and had siblings Robert, Elizabeth, and twins Alexander and Mary (Minnie). His father was a blacksmith.

The second John is in the 1891 and 1901 censuses in Mornington. In 1901 he’s “John W. Welsh”, born 17 February 1975. His father was a farmer.

That last birth date should (obviously) be 17 February 1875!

Thanks for your response. John immigrated to South Dakota in 1893. He signed a Letter of Intent to become as U.S. citizen in 1899. He died in S.D. in 1936 and did not have a Social security number. I have his death certificate. The informant gave John's birth place as Ontario but did not know the names of John's parents. He had no known siblings.

I traced the John born 1 May 1875 at Stratford and found him living in New York. I am certain this John is not mine. The John W. Welsh is not mine as he is still in Canada in 1901.

Your post peaked my curiosity about John Welsh. Palmerston is a town that is on the border of Perth County and Wellington County. In the 1871 census there are a few Welsh families living in the township of Maryborough, Wellington County. They are Irish. I could not figure out if your Welsh was Irish or Scottish from looking at census for South Dakota. John is a common name. Was he married to Myrtle?

Here is a link to a map of Wellington and you can see that Palmerston borders Maryborough and Minto Twps.

Thanks for your reply. John Welsh apparently preferred to be called Thomas or Tom, according to family Lore and some records. His death certificate and draft cards identify him as John Thomas. His death certificate gives his birth as Apr 19, 1884 which is an error. His draft registration gives his birth as Apr 19, 1874 and this year is supported by other documents. John signed his letter of intent to become a citizen in Dec 1899 and gave his birth year as 1874 and immigration date as July 1893.

In the 1905 S.D. state census, he reports that his parents were born in Ayr, Scotland. The 1925 S.D. state census records his religion as Presbyterian. John was married to Myrtle Hankins.

From my limited experience in researching Canada, I find record keeping to be very good. I am at a loss to explain why I cannot find him in Canada and suspect that some of my "known" information on John Walsh may be wrong.

Hi
I have been scrolling back through any records I can find regarding John Welsh and found the above posting. John Welsh (and his wife Mary Forrest) was the nephew of my GGGG grandfather William Welsh who emigrated to New Zealand from Scotland. Johns father was Alexander (1827-1867) who was also a blacksmith. His mother Mary Forsyth was born in Cumbernauld Dunbartonshire Scotland and she was a Pirn Winder (1825-1877). John had 9 or maybe 10 siblings. Two of the younger ones, Robert (1862) and Elizabeth Forsyth (1866) can both be found in the Canada census of 1881 living/holidaying with John and his wife Mary Forrest. John and Mary had twins, in 1873 Alexander and Minnie (she died in 1935 a widower at 273 Cobourgh Street Stratford. John Alexander Welsh was born i1/5/1875. The next child George was born and died in 1880. I think there may have been another George in 1885. There was an Alexander who was the informant of Minnies death and he lived in New York - I wonder if he used his middle name rather that his first. I would be very interested if any one can add any further information on this branch of my family. I have not been able to find an immigration document for John from Scotland but gather it is around 1870 as this can be deduced from the Canadian Census of 1871 were he is recorded as a foundary man.
Hope this helps someone with their search - happy to continue the thread if anyone is seeking more info :)
