HI. I just read your post and communication with J Good from Oct 2000 about David Coulter. Samuel Coulter, David's father was my great great grandfather. I am descended from Samuel's son, Richard Henry Coulter. If you are still interested and still researching I do have information on David Coulter. However because of improved access to census records you may already know that he moved out west. I can provide you with more info if you are interested. Curiously enough I actually have another connection to David Coulter's family as well. I hope to hear from you soon.

I am not descended from this Coulter family but I was wondering if you could help with a couple of things.

1. My gggrandfather purchased the S1/2 of lot 8, concession 3 in MORNINGTON TWP (close to present day Milverton) from his friend, JOHN COULTER. I would imagine this would have been around 1855/56. Was this John related to Samuel Coulter? I have an old tintype of my grandfather with "Mr. Coulter" but, unfortunately, no first name.

2. A member of my tree married Harry M. Coulter (1919-1995) in 1939. Would you happen to know who his parents were? And was he related to the Mornington Coulters?

Thanks for any help.
Kirsten

1. According to my information my gggrandfather Samuel Coulter's father and brother were both named John and lived in Mornington Township. I just checked the map of Mornington from the 1879 County Atlas and it shows John Dobson living on the farm beside John Coulter on Concession 3. By chance is this your relative? I would have to double check but I am quite sure the John Coulter you mention is my gggrandfather's brother. Perhaps at some point I could get a copy of this photo if you are willing?
2. At this point I am not aware of a Harry M Coulter but I am just getting ready to start inputting Coulter data after a break from several years from geneology so it may be hidden in a box somewhere. Could you give me an idea of where he was from. Samuel Coulter had several sons - some remained in the Milverton area others moved to Toronto, Hensall, Michigan and Alberta.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, that is the same property. My ancestor was John Weir. He purchased the south half of lot 8 from his friend, John Coulter, who presumably lived on an adjacent property. In 1868, John Weir was killed in an accidental overturning of a wagon while he was on the way to the foundry in Ayr to get a piece of farm equipment repaired. The equipment fell on top of him killing him instantly. He left a widow and 13 children. They struggled along until his widow died in 1874 leaving several children under age. Due to some irregularity in the deed the children lost the farm. Some time later there was a court case and the court awarded the minor children a token amount. I have the legal documents but I haven't got around to getting them "translated".

After I find the tintype I will scan it for you.

Harry Coulter lived in Listowel, Perth County.

I noticed you posted this almost 15 years ago. If you are still doing research I would be interested in sharing information. David Moss Coulter moved out west and was also a store keeper out there. He is buried there. He did have children.
