What is "Canada West" ?

I found the James Morrison family in Caledon, Peel in the 1861 Census of Canada.

They were all born in "C. W." which I understand means "Canada West".

What does "Canada West" mean? Where is it? Does anyone have any thoughts or an explanation?

Thanks,
Cathy

Thanks for the quick reply.

So, it is the province of Ontario? Was it a name change? I'm trying to understand this fully.

Which James Morrison family are you researching?
I have James Morrison b. 1801 in Ireland m. Nancy Gilchrist and his son John Morrison b. 1844. There was among John's siblings, a James Morrison b. 1841

James Morrison

The James Morrison for whom I am researching was born about 1822 in Peel, Ontario, and was the son of Martin Morrison. James was married to Eliza Jane Neelands

These are two unrelated Morrison families (to my knowledge anyway) There are many posts for your Morrison family though.
