I haven't found any on line maps for Spence but have a look on Google.
IF not, write to the land office in Parry Sound and see what they can do for you.
Doubt if they do research anymore but maybe.

Thanks so much. Looks like 1911 is easier to work with. (I'm still learning the Canadian records). That location seems to correspond with the 1901 also.

That leads to the next question - are there online historical maps showing the Lots/Concessions?

1901 census & Carruthers

I'm trying to determine where on Christie Rd (Hwy 518 now) the John Carruthers family lived. I need to request assistance from someone experienced with using the 1901 census to interpret the results.

I've learned that the 1901 census has a part 2 that gives the location of the family home. John Carruthers is listed in Muskoka & Parry Sound/Spence page 1,line 8. But when I try to view corresponding part 2 on Ancestry and on CollectionsCanada, I come up with 2 different results for address.

If anyone has access and time to check my work, I would appreciate confirmation that Carruthers is located at:
b. Con 9, Lot 34. This is what I come up with at CollectionsCanada.

If this is right - what is the "b"?
If this is not right - I would greatly appreciate being corrected!

Thank you for any suggestions or assistance,

Lyn

Found a few things on your Starrs and am sending it now before I lose it again.
Will look further for them.
So far no luck on 1911 census

From Ancestry.ca

Births listed for child/ren of Frederick Augustus Starr and Agnes Foster,
Frederick Starr 19 Sept 1900, Parry Sound District
Hazel Evalyn, 9 Jul 1902, PS District
William Ernest, 19 July 1909, Burks Falls

Also listed are child/ren of Frederick Augustus Starr and Elizabeth Foster. Agnes/Eliz may be same person

Urania Beatrice, 8 April 1884, Mariposa Victoria County
Susan Lila, 27 Dec 1885, Mariposa
Norman Augustus, 19 Jun 1899 Mariposa

WW1 Attestation Papers
Regimental # 1006967
Milton Starr, b Burks Falls 19 July 1898, living South Porcupine, chauffeur, next of kin: Fred Starr of S Porcupine, signed up in Timmins, 22 Aug 1916.
He was 5'1", fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, small scar on right side of nose near right eye.
Nothing to say he was killed in the war.
Milton is Frederick? Maybe lied about his age to enlist.

Marriage:

Frederick Starr, 20, born and living Mariposa, s/o William Starr and no name Fulford, married Elizabeth Foster, 17, b Whitby, living Mariposa, d/o of David Foster & no name Clark, witn: Charles Tait and Emma Moore both of Mariposa.
Groom is RC; bride Methodist. 25 Oct 1883 Mariposa Victoria County.

Hazel Starr, 21, b Oshawa?, living South Porcupine, d/o Fred Starr and Agnes Foster, married Asa Laffin,23,s/o Benjamin Lappin & Isabel Fenton, b Nova Scotia, living S Porcupine, witn: Rupert Sheppard of S Porcupine and Lillian Roy of Timmins, 25 July 1923 at Timmins.
Also says bride's father born Oshawa.
She was born likely Burks Falls as per birth rego in PS District.

Harvey Starr, cooper, 24, b West Falls, s/o Fred Starr and Agnes Foster, married Amy Fox, 21, b Bradford England, 11 Dec 1926, witn: Annie Baker & Eva Rhodes, Point Edward, Lambton County.
Bridegroom's father born Valencia Ont.
Valentia is in Mariposa Tsp so I guess this is part of your Starr family.
Don't see any West Falls on Ontario locator so could be Burks Falls?

1881 census Mariposa has a David & Agnes Foster with heaps of children, including Agnes aged 16, and Elizabeth 14.
So maybe Eliz died and Fred married Agnes?

Hildebrandt, Ted & Dan

Hello group, I don't know if anyone on this Parry Sound board is able to help, but I thought I would ask my question anyway. I am looking for LIIVING relatives who are in the Parry Sound area. My wish is to add them to my husbands family tree, and to learn more on their branches. I have one picture of Teddy & Danny aged about 3 or 4 years old

My husband has a brother Peter Lafleur who married a Diane Lauzon in Sudbury in 1965, Ont. Unfortunately in the late 1960's they split up and life goes on. My husband has carried a picture of the two boys in his wallet all these years, the picture is almost a rag now, he really misses his nephews and wonders what became of them. I am sure the boys born abt.1966/67 have no memory of their fathers relatives and might want to learn about their roots.

I hope I have not offended anyone with my request, I thought PERHAPS, someone here might even know the family and can pass along the message that we are looking for them and they are not forgotten

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Cheers

Sheila Stewart-Lafleur

Here is a copy of the obit for Gerald Winton Arthurs:
Gerald Winton Arthurs, 80
Morrisburg resident Gerald Winton Arthurs died in Winchester Hospital on Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999 after a brief stay in the hospital. He enjoyed many Florida vacations with his wife and best friend Vivian. Mr. Arthurs was a devoted family man.

Friends called at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Nov. 30.

The funeral service was held in the chapel of the funeral home on Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. Rev. Greg Blatch officiated.

Interment of cremated remains was at Blue Church Cemetery near Prescott. - The Prescott Journal, December 8, 1999.
These were my grandparents and they had several more children. I found this post looking for information on them. My mother Frances Elizabeth was estranged from her family after she married., so my information is incomplete. To my knowledge, there were Gerald, Frances, Ted, Patricia, Kathryn, and John in addition to the older 3. John, like his brother James was a physician. he was the youngest. They may have been living in Prescott Ontario by then. Ted was a lawyer in Prescott prior to his death. Patricia married a well-known Canadian actor. Gerald managed Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg, for years. Kathryn married and raised three boys perhaps in Brockville? Why were you seeking information?
Was Howard Mark Boler her uncle?
Sometimes people were classified as niece, nephew, etc even if they were just close family.

1881 census has a Mark H Boler, 9, born Belfast, as grandson of a Mark Walker whose daughter is Mark's mother, Elizabeth Boler, widow.
There is also a daughter named Effie/Ellie, aged 13 b Derby Cheshire.
No sign of Walter.

1891 census Kidbrooke London
Walter Harold Boler , 21, b St Marys Nottingham, is a patient in what appears to be a military hospital as his occupation is given as 'driver Royal Artillery'.
Hospital is Hirbert Hospital [military], Shooter's Hill Rd, Killbrook.

On rereading Walter's marriage rego to Ann, parents are given as John Boler and Elizabeth Walker so I guess he and Mark were brothers after all.

I have not found a Walter and Howard Mark in the same family on census.

Don't see the Bolers on 1871 census but if Mark was born Ireland, perhaps father was in the army and they are living there at the time?

1911 census gives Mark H as being born Ireland as well.

Where Gertrude was in 1911 census was a 'receiving home for children', Mill Hill Lane Leicester. Howard Mark Boler was the head of it.
Says he is married but no wife in sight.

I sent in corrections.

Walter Harold Boler and Ellen Elizabeth Ecclestone's marriage was registered Jun 1894 quarter in Thanet.

1901 census does not have James with them, only Fred W, and Sydney H.
Maybe he wasn't a son but a cousin/nephew?
Just "Boler" would not work for me.

Also could not find the 1911 Census for Byng Inlet on Ancestry. Did I overlook it somehow, or was that found elsewhere?

Wow, thank you!

I had the enlistments, but I could never find anything when I tried the Soldiers of the First World War database. Did you try different spellings for "Boler"?

The 1911 Census for Byng Inlet is interesting in that my friend's mother, Gertrude Alice Boler, was born in 1902 in England, but left behind by this family, to live with her uncle. We have yet to discover why.

Thanks, again. Will pass this on to my friend.

Boler Family -- Byng Inlet

I'm helping a friend look for British relatives who emigrated to Ontario in the early 1900s.

They wound up in Byng Inlet, where her great-grandfather, Walter Harold Boler, was the police magistrate. His wife, Ellen Elizabeth Eccles, died in 1918. They lost a baby son, John Willie, in 1918, and had two older sons, Frederick W. and Sidney Herbert, who enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force.

Walter Boler remarried in 1920 to Ann Coutts Morrison and died two years later.

The sons don't show up on web sites about Canadian soldiers. The parents and their baby son are buried in the old Byng Inlet cemetery. Ann Boler disappeared after burying her husband.

Any other information or suggestions would be much appreciated.

C. Getz

Hi Jenny,
Sorry I haven't been online in a bit. Yes, Robert Jr is the son of Robert and Jane. I don't believe Robert moved to Parry Sound but another son John Henry did. He is my great great granddad. I have some info on Robert but will have to look it up and send it to you. I found a Robert Tait buried in a cemetary in Northumberland Ca. I think it was Union something but again will have to research some for you. Keep in touch and remind me if I fail to write back on this. Also I was in touchc with Chuck McFadden through ancestry and he is a direct descendent of Robert JR.
Thanks,
Sue

I'm looking for any info about a John McNamara who married Bridget Talbot, somewhere in Kilkenny, Ireland. My sources say that John was born and died in Kilkenny. About 1850, because of the potato famine, Bridget, and her 17 children sailed to Montreal, Canada. They, then moved to Ontario, settling around Adjala. Some of them are still living in Adjala, Albion, Toronto, Orillia, Stratford, Kingston, Parry Sound, Penetanguishene, and nearby towns. Some families have since moved to the States, and living in Buffalo, NY., and Detroit, Michigan.

If anybody can help me, I would really appreciate it. Thank you, Rich

Would your Robert Tait Jr(born 1858?) be the son of Robert Tait and Jane Smith?
I don't have any info on them or descendants and would love to fill it in.
I do live a town away from where I think the Tait's had settled here in Eastern Ontario. (Pakenham)
There's still too much snow to go cemetery trooping, but I had hoped to do that this year.
The Tait's really are a fair distance off my main branch, but I still feel a need to follow them. (probably because several families, including these ones, moved from here to Parry Sound District, practically together), and so much of my own tree is Parry Sound related....hence following up on many branches.

I have nothing else at the moment on the Sr Robert Tait or his wife Jane. I don't know if they died here, and buried here, or went to PSD too and died there?
My guess is buried here though, and I hope to verify that in the coming months.
If there's a stone, I'll get a pic and send you a copy.
If you could please fill me in on Robert and Cecelia's kids? and perhaps grand kids as they relate to your line?
Thanks in advance, and talk to you soon
Jenny
That is another cousin (Myrna) I have been doing a great deal of communicating with and what you sent today we had already received from Myrna. She has tons of info. My husband John and I are planning a trip to Canada this summer to connect with the Groves family. I'm very excited, it's dream come true for me. I'll absolutely stay in contact with you. My mother was very secretive when it came to my father. She really didn't like him and only ended up punishing me for their problems. That's just the way it was back then.
My father Alvin Leslie Groves, his sister Ellen Margaurite Groves,
Austin Robb Groves, were alcoholics. Upon my fathers sobriety (20+years)I wasn't able to obtain much information regarding the family. If there is anything else in the groves family you need please let me know and if I have information will certainly pass on to you. Thank you.
Marilyn (nee Groves) daughter Alvin Leslie Groves (niece Lloyd Groves.)

Lloyd Robb(Robert) Groves is my Father. That was his garage in 1949 and I was 1 year old. It was located at Granville Island. My father disappeared around 1964 or so. I am searching for his place of death. Any information will gratefully be accepted.
Peaches Mary Esther Groves-Sea

Hi Jenny,
John Henry was my great great grandda, my great gd was William Francis. To the best of my knowledge Mary Moore was his second wife but Sarah Jane Fanny Hunt was his first wife and mother to my geart gd. I have info now on John Henry's father Robert and have found the gravemarker in Lanark are cemetery just yesterday. John Henry's brother Robert Jr married Cecilia Lawson who also was related to Fanny. I am still looking into Fanny. I'm not positive but William Wood could be my grandfather's brother. My grandda being Norman T Wood who married Francis Aurita Tait my gd ma. Let me know if I can be of further help. Robert and family emmigrated from Ireland about 1850ish to Lanark and John Henry brought family to Parry Sound.
