Green, Scott, Tibbs in Parry Sound ca. 1862-1883
I am seeking information about three related families which were in the Parry Sound, Ontario area from about 1862-1883.
Sidney William TIBBS and Jane TIBBS (née HAYWARD) were married in Somerset, England in 1858 and emigrated later that same year aboard the Neptune, a packet ship of the Black Ball Line, from Liverpool to New York City. From there they traveled to Warren County, Ohio. They came to the Parry Sound area in 1862 from Ohio in the wake of the start of the American Civil War. When they came to Canada, they already had two children who were born, & probably christened, in Ohio, Oliver William TIBBS (b. 1860) and Mary Ellen TIBBS (b. 1861). But all their other children were born in Canada. Per a family history, "The children were all christened under the Presbyterian Church in 1879, by the Rev. John Campbell. Records may be found at Parry Sound or Ontario, Canada. This is according to a memorandum in Grandmother's [Jane (Hayward) Tibbs] Bible."
These children, all of who were reportedly born in Humphrey Township, were as follows:
16 Aug 1864 Harriet TIBBS (my great-grandmother) 30 Apr 1867 Sidney William TIBBS, Jr. 16 Jun 1869 James A. TIBBS (my cousin's grandfather) 16 Feb 1971 Charles Arthur TIBBS 22 Dec 1875 Thomas Hayward TIBBS 6 Feb 1879 Leona Jane TIBBS
Two of the TIBBS children were married while still living in the Parry Sound area:
9 Dec 1879 Mary Ellen TIBBS to George Arthur SCOTT 1 Dec 1880 Harriet TIBBS to William Aaron (or possibly Arthur) GREEN
Additional births/christenings:
10 Apr 1881 William SCOTT (born to George & Mary Ellen SCOTT) 23 Sep 1884 Herbert William GREEN (born to William & Harriet GREEN) (though records are in conflict: Herbert may have been born in Nebraska)
I am also trying to learn anything I can about the Scott and Green relatives of George Arthur SCOTT and William Aaron (or Arthur) GREEN, both of whom were reportedly the nephews of a Tommy GREEN who had traveled with Sidney TIBBS from Ohio to the Parry Sound District. William GREEN (1857-1949) was my great-grandfather. I don't (yet) know his parents' names. A couple of on-line genealogies say he was born in England, but that is not confirmed.
The Tibbs, William Green, and George Scott families all moved to Nebraska ca. 1883/84, & later to Baker County, Oregon, but it's probable that other Scott & Green relatives remained in the area.
I would appreciate any assistance or suggestions in tracking down information about these families.

Re: Green, Scott, Tibbs in Parry Sound ca. 1862-1883
Your people are not on the 1881 census for the district of Muskoka which covered Parry Sound as well. They must have moved before then. There are two William Greens on the census in the area. One born 1853, one 1859. Both born Ontario.

Re: Green, Scott, Tibbs in Parry Sound ca. 1862-1883
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I've looked & looked at the 1881 Canadian under every variation & misspelling of the Tibbs name, or Scott, or Green, I can think of , & was never able to find them. But problematically, the first Scott child, William SCOTT, is supposed to have been born in Ontario on 10 Apr 1881. Maybe they were still in Ontario, but on the move without a stable residence, when the census took place?
Do you know the actual dates that census takers were going around doing their enumerations?
Thanks again.

Dear Mel,
Contact the Parry Sound North Star newpaper. They are selling a 320 page booklet listing many names from that period. Some of the Scott, Green and Tibbs families are listed in it. The Star Gazing, "Reflections from the Parry Sound North Star" lists a collection of births, marriages, deaths, selected articles and photos. The Parry Sound North Star is suppose to be printing a new booklet with dates from the 1900s and up.

Re: Green, Scott, Tibbs in Parry Sound ca. 1862-1883 - UPDATE
Since my first query, I've received additional information that William Aaron GREEN's parents were Erastus GREEN (b. 18 Mar 1835) and Jane SCOTT (b. about 1846).
Erastus is the son of Henry GREEN (1789-1870) and Mary Ann SILVER (1816-1910); many of their children and descendants lived in Frontenac County, Ontario, especially around Kingston. Many of the Green siblings married members of the VANKOUGHNETT (and variations) family -- some of that family also lived in Muskoka.
Jane (SCOTT) GREEN is the daughter of William SCOTT and Sophia (last name unknown).
Thanks to this information, I've been able to locate William and Harriet (TIBBS) GREEN in the 1881 Canadian census. Probably nobody found them before because the census enumerator and/or the person who transcribed the census for the LDS FamilySearch website really hashed up their names.

That would be Erastus Green, Jane (Scott) Green, their son William Green, and his wife Harriet (Tibbs) Green, who were married in Parry Sound, the Diocese of Algoma on 1 Dec 1880 by R. Mosley, Incumbent, according to their marriage certificate (which I am now in possession of).
I've also found the family of Jane (Scott) Green's parents, William and Sophia SCOTT -- and they have living with them George Arthur and Mary Ellen (TIBBS) SCOTT, as well as George & Mary's oldest son William, who was just born. (The census gives Mary's place of birth incorrectly, however -- she was born not in Ontario but in Ohio.)

If this William & Sophia Scott family is indeed the birth family of Jane Scott, then either George Scott is living in his uncle's family, or George was William Green's uncle, not his cousin, as family history has it.
I have still been unable to locate the Tibbs family in the 1881 Canadian census, despite numerous attempts. Possibly they had already left for Nebraska by this time, and the William Green and George Scott families followed them.
There were other Scott families in the 1881 census for McDougall & Cowper & Foley, who might be related.
I would love to share information with anyone also with an interest in these families.
