Researching Thurlow families in East Nissouri, Ontario, Canada.
Francis Thurlow (born circa 1820) and brother James Thurlow (born circa 1813) immigrated from Weaverthorpe, Yorkshire, England around 1843/1844.
Francis and Alice (nee Burton) Thurlow are my great-great grandparents. They had 7 children (Henry, Mary Ann, John, Robert, James (or Jane), Elizabeth Ann and George Francis. My connection is through John Thurlow (born 1848) and his son Russell Norman Thurlow (1882-1959), my grandfather.
Looking for information re James Thurlow (born circa 1813 in Yorkshire) who married Margaret nee unknown (born circa 1828 in Ireland). They farmed in East Nissouri, Ontario and had at least 8 children (Anne, William, David, Robert, Mary, James, Ellen, Elizabeth).
Did any of Francis’ and James’ other siblings immigrate? Their names are Ann, William, Robert, Betty (Elizabeth?), Mary, Hannah, Jane, Harriet, Ellen, all born between 1804 and 1828.
Please contact if you can help.

The only thing I can find re Thurlows of Yorkshire is a christening of a Francis Thurlow, 18 Mar 1821, Kilnwick Yorkshire, s/o John Thurlow & Mary.

Have you looked at the IGI on www.familysearch.org for marriages of the rest of the family?

1851 census Oxford West, Oxford County, Ontario
THURLOW
James, yeoman, England , 40
Margaret, England ,24
Ann, Canada, 4
Wm, Canada, 3
David, Canada, 2
Robert, Canada, 1
Mary Wales, Ireland, widow, 54

On the same page is :
Francis, yeoman, England, 27
Allice, England, 30
Henry, Canada,
Mary, ", 8
Joh, ", 6
Robt, " ,5
Elizabeth, ", 3
Hannah, ", 1

1861 census Oxford Ontario

THURLOW
James, England, farmer,47
Margaret, Ireland, 33
Mary Wales, Ireland,66
Ann, Canada West, 13
William, CW,12
David, CW,11
Robert, CW, 9
Mary, CW,7
James, CW, 5
Ellen, CW, 3
Elizabeth, CW, 2
I think Mary Wales may possibly be Margaret's mother.

Francis Thurlow is still alive and on 1891 census in Nissouri East. He is a widower, 73, b England, living with George, 33, Agnes 31, Elizabeth 13 and Ellen Peral 7.

Having a problem locating James after 1861 census [which you likely are as well].

I cannot find anything else on James. I checked the 1881 census www.familysearch.org in US, England and Canada but no sign of them. They couldn't possibly have all died at once.
I checked the 1871 census as well.
Looked for marriages of the children. No luck.
Checked for deaths of any of them. No Luck.

Hi Susan ... thanks for your message. I do have a bit of information on James Thurlow but not a lot. My own connection is through his younger brother Francis Thurlow. I'd be happy to share what I have with you if you want to email me directly at neil_houlton@yahoo.ca. Thanks again for getting in touch.

Hi, I am also researching this family. My ancestor is Francis's Aunt, Mary Woodall (Woodhill) born
in 1779 at Helperthorpe, YKS, ENG. Her sister, Ann born c1782 same place, married Robert Thurlay in 1803 at Helperthorpe, YKS, ENG. Thurlay changed to Thurlow in Canada. Some of the family immigrated in the 1850s. Mary Woodall married John Towse in 1802 at Helperthorpe, YKS, ENG. She immigrated to New Brunswick with husband & family in 1817,
Hope we can connect.
Marilyn

How sure are you of the Thurlay name change? Many times census takers have bad penmenship. Thurlow may look like Thurlay. This is important info.

I am James Thurlow's GGG son.

Thank you.
