The oral tradition is that the Brethours were established in Brock Ontario by David Brethour 1792-1869 who came to Canada with two brothers, Michael Brethour abt 1775 and John Brethour.

Michael moved to Udora and milled lumber.

John apparently moved to the Burlington area.

I seem to have located David in the 1851 census with wife Ann Lodwick.

Does anyone have details on the alleged siblings Michael and John and the alleged damn pond built in Udora?

Let me check at the Uxbridge library for any information about the Brethours.

I did find the following in Scott Township in the 1861 Census. As you may know, Udora sits on the border between Scott and Georgina Townships. No way of knowing by this census where they were in Scott:

Brethaw, James, yeoman, b. Ireland, English Church, aged 36, married
Brethaw, Phebe, b. Canada, aged 30, married
Brethaw, Eliza, b. Canada, aged 10
Brethaw, Michael, b. Canada, aged 8
Brethaw, Samuel, b. Canada, aged 6
Brethaw, Katharine, b. Canada, aged 4

Phebe's death record in 1918:

Phoebe Brethour, died 5 June 1918, aged 87 years, 3 months, b. Brock Township, died Sunderland, burial in St. John's Cemetery, widow, daughter of Philip St. John & Ann Baker; informant: James Brethour of Sunderland.

Is this John in Trafalgar, Halton County in the 1851 census:

Brethour, John, farmer, b. Ireland, Episcopalian, aged 67, married
Brethour, Ann, b. Ireland, aged 60
Brethour, Edward, b. Ireland, aged 34
Brethour, Joseph, b. Ireland, aged 19
Brethour, Hannah, b. Ireland, aged 24

Another death of interest:

James E. Brethour, died January 2, 1929, aged 87 years, 4 months, 11 days; born 22 August 1841 Georgina Township, son of John Brethour, b. Ireland, and Eliza Shier, b. Ireland; informant: W.O. Webster, nephew, Udora; burial in St. John's Cemetery, Brock Township.

I am grateful for your reply which I have yet to analyse. While I seem to have David Brethour 1792-1869 sorted, it is the other families that I can not yet unravel.

You refer to records at Uxbridge about the family of Michael Brethour. What are they?

I will look more closely to see if I can sort out these early branches.

Michael Brethour dod 7 Nov 1862 age 87
A trip to St John Cemetery near Sunderland provided the headstone of Michael Brethour, among those who appear to be later generation such as David Brethour.

Is it likely that this Michael is father of David, and the Michael in Udora?

Hi:

I think I have a connection but I'm not sure where it fits. I have a gg grandmother whose maiden name was Phoebe Brethour. I have no idea about her parentage. I know that she was originally from Ballingrane and that she married Adam Mick in 1831. I know the year from an 1861 Ontario census, but I have no further information. The enumerator asked every couple what year they were married and if not in 1860 or 1861, crossed out the year.

Adam and Phoebe and family came to Canada in 1842, originally settling in Ramsay Township, Lanark County, Ontario. Phoebe's youngest son was named Samuel. Adam and Phoebe moved to what is now Saskatchewan and she died there in 1891 at the age of 80, giving her a birth year of 1811.
