I am looking for info on Adam Dennis and his wife Sophia, who immigrated to Niagara County around 1787 from New Jersey. Their children were John, Catherine, Conrad, Aaron, and another son. Adam Dennis married Jane Laraway around 1791 in Welland County.
I found a reference to an Adam Dennis of Pelhem refusing to take an oath in 1787, and wondered if this was the same Adam Dennis. If so, he may have been connected to the Brethren in Christ Church or the Quakers.

Most of the Dennis family who came to Niagara c 1787 from NJ were Quakers.

What's odd is that I have Adam Dennis and his wife, Sophia, as members of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldwick, NJ, immediately before they immigrated to Canada.

Hi,
I might have this wrong but i have it as a JOHN Dennis b. 1748 New Jersey who was married to Sophia. I have all those children listed including a son JOHN Dennis b. 1768 New Jersey who married Jane Lar(r)away abt. 1791. They in turn had my many times ggrandmother Dorothy Dennis b. 1794 who married David Long. John and Jane also had a son ADAM Dennis who married a Leah Doan.
Cheers,
Marg.

You could well be right about the husband of Sophia being John rather than Adam. I'll have to look back through my source material. I know I was having trouble with the generations with so many Adams and Johns in the Dennis line.
I think there may have been another Adam Dennis up in the Niagara area around that time. He may have been a Quaker from Buck's County, PA. That is the same area that Leah Doan's family came from. It could be that Adam Dennis that was refusing the oath.
Do you have any info on Byron Dennis, gg-grandson of John (or Adam) and Sophia? He immigrated to Michigan, and married a Myra or Zemira. Byron is said to have been killed or disappeared around 1888 in Kansas. I can't find info on the parents of Byron's wife.

I wonder if my dates are wrong, or if this is perhaps a different John Dennis and Jane Larraway in the same community. I have John Dennis and Jane Laraway with 7 children by 1804! I do have Jane as the daughter of Jonas, tho.
|
Oh, I'm sorry. 1804 is the O.C. date, not their marriage date.

Jonas Larroway had a son Abraham Larroway of Louth Twp. His children were; Adam of Louth, O.C.14 Dec. 1816 & Sophia Md. Thomas McClaskey of Blenheim. O.C. 20 July 1837, Jonas Larraway Jr. & wife Catherine are buried in the Bethel Congregation Cemetery on Hwy No. 8, (Reg.Rd.8l) west of St. Catharines, in the former Louth Twp;. There was another Family named Dennis in Clinton Twp. who came from Knowlton, Warren County, New Jersey, but they are descended from Ezekiel Dennis. Your Adam Dennis is very elusive. Good Luck.

Joseph Dennis, the forefather of the Dennis's of Upper Bucks originated from NJ and returned to NJ before he died. My connection is to his son John Dennis of Upper Bucks. My Dennis family settled in the Niagara Region after the American Revolution. Some of their decendants settled later in MI.
