Come in Highway 118 West from Highway 11. Go through the first set of stoplights which are right before the bridge. Directly after the bridge, turn left at the first street (which only goes left). It is Santa's Village Road. The cemetery is less than a kilometer down, on your left. You can pull right in. It is a small cemetery and quite walkable. If you want a site plan to find your ancestor directly, you need to get one from the town hall.

Could someone please get info for me on the property Edward Thomson's owned at the head of North Bay in the 1860's to determine the actual date of purchase? This would be useful to me in determining when they (Edward and Mary) started living in Medora.

A map of the Medora area circa 1890 shows lands owned by Edward Thomson and Wm Larway (brother-in-law) at the head of North Bay. The properties were in Concession I, lots 21 and 22 (for Edward), and 23 and 24 (for Wm).

I contacted the Land Registry Ofc in Bracebridge and they have the historic records but do not do lookups. Their location is:

15 Dominion Street
Bracebridge ON P1L 2E7
705) 645-4415

If someone would like the 1890 map or other info, please contact me at email:
djjr7744@comcast.net

Thank you,
Dan Harvey
Scarborough; b. Scarborough
parents: George & Lydia (Terry)
bride: Lorway, Mary 21; res. Scarborough; b. Alexander Topp, a Minister of the Presbyterian Church

Mary Lawray's parents are already known. My g-grandmother's, Eliza Thomson, aren't.

Thanks for the additional info.
Dan

If she was born in 1868 the birth wouldn't have been registered as registration didn't begin until the next year and was somewhat sporadic after that for a few years.
Same with Mary's death. It likely wasn't registered.

Did not find a marriage rego for them in Ontario.
Would her death registration list parents?

Good point on the place of burial. I have checked the online headstone websites including the one you reference to no avail. Probably not a headstone as you state.

The reason for knowing about any children that might have been born to Edward and Mary Larway relates to research we are doing to find the birth family of our g-grndmthr, Eliza L. Thomson/Thompson, b. abt 1868 in Ontario. She married Hugh McMillan and immigrated to North Dakota abt 1897. She died there in 1906. If Mary died in child birth, that could be useful info to us.

On 1911 census he was boarding with someone.

I would think he is likely buried in Medora as the informant didn't seem to know too much about him so wouldn' t likely have buried him in Scarborough.
He may just not have had a headstone.
Check the local cemeteries and see if their records are that far back.
Doesn't look as if there were any children and he never remarried as he was always alone and listed as widowed.

I am looking for whatever info, as a newspaper obit or notice of death in particular, I can find on Edward Thomson. He lived in the Medora area, primarily west of Port Carling from 1871-1911. A land map of Medora (circa 1800's) shows he had land there adjacent to Wm Larway (bro-in-law).

Edward was b. Nov. 1828 in Scarborough and d. Nov 1911 Lot 15, Concession E, Medora. I don't know if he was buried in the area, which would be interesting to know also. He married Mary Larway in London, Ont. in 1859 but she appears to have died btwn 1861-1871. Where she died and is buried is unkwn. I don't know if there were any children, which is part of what I'm trying to find.

Census records show him as a widower living in:
1871: Edward Thompson, age 37, Muskoka, Humphry & Medora
Note: age is way off, so not 100% certain of record
1881: Edward Thomson, age 52, Muskoka, Wood & Medora
1891: Edward Thomson, age 62, Simcoe E., Medora & Wood.
1901: Edward Thomson, age 72, Simcoe E., Medora & Wood.
1911: Edward Thompson, age 82, Muskoka, Medora

Thank you,
Dan Harvey
Snohomish, WA
email: djjr7744@comcast.net

Contact the Ontario Historical Society at 416-226-9011. They can send you a photocopy of The Migration of Voyageurs From Drummond Island To Penetanguishene In 1828. This copy mentions The Giroux family and other French voyageurs who fought in the War of 1812. They all settled in the Muskoka, Parry Sound up to Sudbury region. Some married into the Indian bands in the area. Some of them came with Indian wives/partners. Check the word Anishnawbe that is the word this Algonquian language.

Do you have any info on F.X Giroux. I know that he was born around 1875 in Lafontaine, Tiny Township and married for the first time in 1898 to Marie Louise Moreau.
The Giroux's were mixed Ojibway and french voyageurs from Drummond Island. The Ojibways and french voyageurs all settle in Simcoe/Tiny area. Some married into the Shawanga First Nation band and you will find that name there.

I just have Aug 1895 and that came from a census. She married Charles M. Perrine in Niagra Falls, Canada, 14, Jun 1911, license date 11 Jun 1911. Listed birth year about 1893. It looks like she had to be 18 to get married.
Her obituary states she was 60 when she died in Nov 1955. Birth year would be 1895. Looks like they eloped and maybe lied about her age?
1891 Canadian Census lists them in Milton, Ontario. Probably a mystery I'll never solve.

It looks like all the Hartleys immigrated back to America in 1899. Hattie and Willie aren't on the U.S. 1900 census (05 June 1900) but Jessie May Hartley, age 4, is. She's the adopted daughter. I have Laura Lucinda's will and she left items to her adopted daughter Jessie.

Yes I do but Willie and Hattie aren't their kids. I think Hattie's last name is Burch and Willie's is Hatfield. I can't check at the moment but I don't think they were with the Hartley's when they immigrated.
Also, Anson, according to 1900 U.S. Census, immigrated in 1899. He died 04 Oct 1900. There had to been a divorce if Sarah remarried in 1899. Now, I wonder what he died from. I'll have to check the North East papers for an obit. He was only 30 when he died. The historical society will have a death certificate because he died before 1905. It's never easy is it? Thanks

Thank you so much for responding. Anson (I know it's Warren but he went by Anson) is my 2nd great grand uncle. He died about 2 years after they got married. I figured she went back to Canada and I just wanted to know what happened to her. I don't know if you're from Canada but do you know if their adoption records are public? Joseph and Lucinda Hartley adopted 1 daughter when they lived in Canada and it looks like they had two foster children for a short time. Thanks again for your help.

I am searching for Sarah Jane Prince, b:27 Nov 1880 in Ontario. Her parents were Albert Prince and Mary Louisa Joyce. She is listed in the 1891 census living in Muskola & Perry Sound. She was married to Anson Walter Hartley about 1895. Anson died in Greenfield Twp, Erie co., Pennsylvania. I then find her in the 1901 Canadian Census living back in Muskola & Perry Sound. I think she died in 1960. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

you will note that spellings etc are a bit out but thats normal when trying to read some of the handwriting on originals - also nick names were oftentimes used. Staying with the surname + Port Severn etc this is what I think - you will have to do a bit of reseach to confirm

1911
Name: Frank Giroux
[Frank Geroux]
Walter H. Brown (1861- aft 1920)

Walter was probably born in Brantford area around 1861 the son of Frederick & Eliza (Jones I think) Brown. He married an Elizabeth E. Walker, born 1869, on 15 Nov 1891 in Brantford although at the time they were both living in Hepworth, Ontario. In 1901 they are living in Keppel Twsp, Grey Co which could be in Hepworth where Walter is a "millwright". In 1911 they are living in Bracebridge where Walter's occupation still shown as a "millwright". What happened to Walter after 1911?? I think he is still in Bracebridge in 1920 when his older brother William H. Brown dies in Baysville near Bracebridge, and Walter is the informant. I have checked all the cemetery sites in Muskoka for a tombstone for Walter and wife Elizabeth, but no luck. Mind you they may have moved away from Bracebridge area after 1920.

Amen to that. Other areas bent over backwards. Huntsville even had them looked up and ribboned for me. So much difference.

Yes, it really is an embarrassment regarding how difficult they make it to do lookups on the cemetery plan. I have visited other cemeteries in other municipalities and have been treated so WELL by comparison. I think the town did not WANT to take on this responsibility and they let you know it. If you have a good experience here, please share so the rest of us will know how to go about it or to whom we should speak!

If there is no headstone you will have to get in touch with the Town of Barcebridge and get them to look it up on their map of the cemetery. They had to do that for me but they were not really very nice about it. They found my greatgrandmother or tere abouts and then sent me the location and I found a large mound of dirt on top of her and the only way to get them to move it was to get them to install corner stones. Good luck finding your family. Still looking for one of mine that is probably there but have not had luck as they were not very obliging.

I will try on Wed. Some times the stones were not inscribed though.
Is this the Nutt's...............
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~murrayp/mu...

It is hard to read but looks like Thomas and something Sarah. It is in the Ulswater south one. I was by there today.
Lots of nuts there.............
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~murrayp/mu...

I travel the area for work. I could stop and try to get a better pic if you would like. Just not sure when I will be by there again but usually once a month I am in that area.

Mel Kennedy
Sundridge

Hello.
Yes, if you are going to Bracebridge this week, that would be nice. Every time I plan a trip down there, something always gets in the road. They are buried in the United Church Cemetery, 40 Santa's Village Rd. Left Block. I have found G Grand Pa's stone, but not hers. I would imagine she is on the backside of his marker. Her stone should read; 1842(Ireland) -1909 age 67 yrs.Or some such. I still have to go to the Ullswater Cemetery for a photo on my other G Grand Parents; Thomas & Sarah Nutt. I have his, need hers. If you could send a pic of Margarets, that would be great.
Thanks for helping.
Barry Kennedy
Pembroke, On
baryken@yahoo.ca
