Alexander McMullen, 24, b Canada, living Stephenson Tp, bachelor, farmer, s/o Malcolm & Christina McMullen, married Sarah Elizabeth Prebble, 17, b Canada, living Barrie, d/o Stephen & Mary Prebble, witn: Joseph Prebble & Mary McMullen both of Stephenson Tp, 31 Dec 1875, Bracebridge, Muskoka, Registration # 005938.

They are on 1881 census Brunel & Stephenson, Muskoka under McMillan.
A Stephen Thomas Prebble is also on census Muskoka but wife's name is Elizabeth. They have a Sarah Jane. Doubt if they would have 2 daughters named Sarah. He is the only Stephen Prebble on the 1881 census that I could find.

Death: Elizabeth Prebble, 21 Jul 1898, 77, b England, died of heart disease, # 009365. Informant: Dr Howland. Stephenson, Muskoka.

1901 and 1911 on www.automatedgenealogy.com

I couldn't find any Stephen Prebble on 1851 census but the ones for Simcoe and north have been lost/destroyed. Malcolm and Christina McMillan are on 1901 census in Stephenson.

1871 [head of household index only] has a Stephen Prebbel , 54, b England, in Stephenson. Likely the above Stephen.
There is also a Mary Prebbel,41, in Innisfil, Simcoe South.
3 Mary Prebbles in Oro, Simcoe North.
There are no Prebble/els on 1861 census Simcoe.
I am only mentioning Simcoe because Sarah Elizabeth was living there when she got married. If she was living in Barrie when she got married at 17, chances are that is where her parents were or nearby.
To see the whole census, you have to order the film either from your library or LDS library [fater].

1901 census again
Alexander and Sara are living in Egremont, Grey South. I checked them out through birth registration of son Malcolm J who was registered in Stephenson Tp so they were still there then. Daughter Clara was also b Muskoka 1897.

Sorry not to have been of more help.

Thank you for your information about Alexander McMillan & Sarah Elizabeth Prebbles. You have solved my mystery. I had Sarah Elizabeth connected to the wrong Prebble family until I found her death certificate and needed to know if it really was the right person and now I know for sure that it is.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Surnames: Prebble
I have Stephen Thomas Prebble in my tree. Elizabeth is believed to be wife number 3. His son Joseph was born to wife number 2, Mary. On some cenus returns the kids are born in the U.S and others in Ontario, which leads me to believe they came from England to the United States and then to Ontario. My great grandmother Sarah Jane Prebble was born in York County. The family later moved to Stephenson Twp. in Muskoka. Joseph's family eventually moved to western Canada. Any chance that Stephen and Mary and son Joseph are the same people in both trees? Sarah Elizabeth and Sarah Jane would have had two different mothers. Sarah Jane went by Jane.

I too have Stephen Thomas Prebble on my tree, and I see that you and I may share other ancestors as well, as I too am descended from the Doner's by way of Catharine Doner marrying Samuel Baker -- my g-g-grandparents were John S. Baker and Sarah (Sally) Schell. Anyway, about Stephen Thomas... I wonder if you've been able to confirm his place of birth in England. I am about 99% sure that he was the brother of my g-g-grandfather Jonathan Prebble, son of John and Mary Prebble. The 3 of them were on the 1861 census for Oro Township in Simcoe County. John and Mary's married daughter Sarah Ann Collins immigrated to Simcoe County in 1870 with her husband and 2 married daughters and 4 grandchildren, and for a time they all lived side by side. I've noticed that from census to census Stephen Thomas's year of birth changes dramatically. At his death in Barrie in 1909 he was said to be 102 but I believe that to be incorrect and that he was in fact born in 1823 in Lyminge Kent where the 1851 Lympne Kent census stated that Sarah Ann Collins and her oldest child Hannah were born. Baptism records for children of John and Mary Prebble in Lyminge include a Stephen Thomas baptised on 29 June1823. I found Stephen age 38 with wife Mary and family in Erie, New York in 1860 (all 4 children ages 1 - 7 being born in Canada); then age 54 in Muskoka in 1871; still there in 1881 age 69; again in 1891 age 79; but in 1901 he is 94; and by 1909 he is said to be 102. Only between 1881 and 1891 did his age change by the appropriate 10 years. On all other census he seems to age by at least 15 years. John and Mary, as well as their children Sarah Ann and Jonathan, were all listed as 'illiterate' so in all likelihood that was the case for Stephen Thomas as well, which may have played a role -- or maybe he just felt (or looked) old before his time. The 1871 census has him in Muskoka with wife Elizabeth and 17 year old Joseph (son of Mary), as well as 3 daughters under 10, the oldest of whom (age 7) was born in the U.S.. His oldest daughter by Mary, Mary Ann, seems to be living with the George Collard family in Whitchurch in 1871 (her mother's maiden name was Collard). Interestingly, I also find Mary Ann and Joseph living with their mother Mary (said to be a widow) and 4 younger siblings in Innisfil in 1871, the youngest of whom is only 3 years old. The names and ages do match with the family in Erie in 1860. I think Joseph and Mary Ann were listed as family members, despite possibly being absent. It looks as though Stephen Thomas either abandoned or divorced Mary after Martha was born in the U.S. in 1861 and that her youngest child Ellen born in 1868 may have been fathered by someone else. All of Stephen Thomas's children were born in Canada except Martha (born to Mary in 1861) and Rebecca (born to Elizabeth in 1864), both of whom were said to be born in the U.S. As you said, Sarah Jane was born in Ontario -- so it looks like the family was only in Erie from about 1860 until perhaps 1865. Anyway, my purpose in doing all of this research on Stephen Thomas was in the hope of finding out more about John and Mary Prebble, who I believe to be his parents. It does look as though we share other ancestors as well though. I'm hoping that you'll e-mail me at batiaca@yahoo.ca.
