Obit lookup - Grace Wright d. 1886

I would appreciate it if someone has the time to look for an obit in the Manitoulin Expositer for Grace Ann Wright who died in Howland on 19 July 1886:

WRIGHT, Grace Ann, Sex: Female. Date of Death: 19 Jul 1886; Location: Howland, Cause of Death: Old age; Age: 80y. Place of Birth: Ireland; Date of birth: Not given. OVR# 001074

If you can't find an obit, please keep an eye out for a funeral notice. I have yet to find where she is buried, so if the obit doesn't give the name of the cemetery, maybe there is a funeral notice that does.

I emailed the NEMI library and asked for their help, but they never responded.

there is a 53 yr old Wright female with them, transcribed as Crusalania but probably Grace Ann or Annie

Thanks for the info. I am the one who put up all the Find A Grave memorials that you cite. She is apparently not buried with her husband Charles from all the transcriptions I have found on the web, but maybe she has no headstone. I am hoping an obit or funeral notice will mention the graveyard she is in and confirm it is her.

I have seen the same death notice you posted, as well as this one:

WRIGHT, Grace Ann, Sex: Female. Date of Death: 19 Jul 1886; Location: Howland, Cause of Death: Old age; Age: 80y. Place of Birth: Ireland; Date of birth: Not given. OVR# 001074

I am not sure where Algoma is, but I am assuming she was living with a member of her family on Manitoulin Island where I know they were. I have yet to find her in the 1881 Canadian census.

I have not found her in the 1851 census as you did. If it is on Ancestry, I am not a member. You say "no children with Charles and Grace", but do you mean you see only Charles and Grace together with no children?

Thanks for the clarification on the 1851 census. I should have also asked where they were living in the 1851 census and hope you have time to respond back.

I have never seen them together in a census. Her husband Charles was in the English military and left the service in 1833 in India. His discharge papers said he intended to receive his pension in Donegal, Ireland, but his daughter was born in England in 1835. So between 1833 and 1860 I do not know exactly where he was and I don't know when he arrived in Canada.

when I look at the 1851 census again, I don't think it is them after all

Charles Wright b Ireland age 71
Rose Anna Wright age 71 b Ireland

Sorry about that

Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Algoma was created by proclamation in 1858[2] as a provisional judicial district of the Province of Canada comprising territory north of the French River as far west as Pigeon River (Minnesota-Ontario), including all Canadian islands in Lakes Huron and Superior. The authorizing act of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada was An Act to provide for the Administration of Justice in the unorganized Tracts of Country within the limits of this Province (known by its short title as The Temporary Judicial Districts Act, 1857).

The district seat has been Sault Ste. Marie since 1858.

As the population grew and the northern and northwestern boundaries of Ontario were determined by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, Algoma shrunk. Other districts were created from it by the provincial government of Ontario:
Thunder Bay District in 1871
Manitoulin District in 1888 *****
Sudbury District in 1894
Timiskaming District in 1912

Thanks again for taking the time to look for me. That doesn't appear to be Charles and Grace, as you say. Charles would have been about 59 and born in England. I looked at the 1851 census here but did not find what you found:

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/census/1851/Pages/1851.aspx

Thanks for the detailed explanation of Algoma. I am not quite sure why one death record says Algoma and the other says Howland. I had thought that Grace was on Manitoulin when she died, but I may be mistaken in thinking her daughter was living on Manitoulin Island or maybe there are two Howlands. I need to study this further given the information you gave me on Algoma. This is her daughter in the 1881 census:

Census Year: 1881
Item Number: 4712329
Surname: SLACK
Given Name(s): Catherine
Age: 46
Province: Ontario
District Name: Algoma
Sub-District Name: Howland and Strawberry and Lacloche and Haywood Island

Howland Township is on Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin was part of the District of Algoma until 1889 when an act of Legislature provided Manitoulin to be Provincial Judicial District.
Hope this helps.

lauryle,

Thanks, that does help. I have it figured out now after a little more research. Howland Township was a part of the Algoma District until 1889 when Manitoulin District was formed out of part of the Algoma District. Then in 1998 Howland Township was merged with Little Current to form Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands. I didn't understand that a district was a political division in Ontario. I had thought it was just a geographic area.

So, Grace Wright might have an obit in the Manitoulin Expositer

I believe Howland is on Manitoulin Island and Algoma is the district the are both in.
