Excepts from 'Annals of the Forty' No 4 Loyalist and Pioneer Families of West Lincoln
1783-1833, publ by The Grimsby Historical Society 1953: FISHER FAMILY:
In the early years of settlement two pioneers, by the name of Jacob Fisher came to
this district from New Jersey. One of them settled in Clinton township, the other in
Gainsborough and both were probably descended from Peter Fisher, of whom a
descendant, B VanDoran Fisher, of New Jersey wrote: "In the old graveyard at
Lawrason's Corners sleep many of the early settlers of Hunterdon County NJ. Rough
unlettered stones mark their graves and only the stains of time and the covering moss
give a clue to the years that have passed since they began their silent vigil. Among
the graves of early worthies, undistinguishable from those of his neighbors, is that
of Peter Fisher. Whence he came to this country and when we have not been able to
determine. We find, however, from old records that he must have settled in New Jersey
not later than 1725 and probably much earlier."
Peter Fisher on his arrival in this country settled first in Somerset County, New
Jersey, where he remained until 1730 when he purchased a farm near Rocktown,
Hunterdon County, which farm is still owned by one of his descendants. The deed of
purchase is dated 30 Mar 1730 and it was conveyed to him in consideration of one
hundred and thirty-five pounds of lawful silver, money of the King's Dominions in
America-two hundred acres of land beside the usual allowance for highways. From
Chambers' book-Families of the German Valley, New Jersey: 'Peter Fisher had eight
children-Anthony, John William, Elizabeth, Christopher, John, Peter, Jacob and
another daughter name unknown."
The Jacob Fisher whone name was inserted on the first map of CLINTON Twp (Lincoln Co,
Ontario), on Lot 23, Conc II and whose neighbor on an adjoining lot was Miller
Lawrason, was probably the son or grandson of Peter Fisher, who was buried at
Lawrason's Corners, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.
From early marriage lists and muster rolls of the district of Lincoln Co, Ontario,
one gathers that there were several Fisher brothers and sisters who came to Canada,
namely:
Jacob: who settled on Lot 13, Conc II and served in the War of 1812-4th Lincoln
Regiment.. He had two children recorded in deeds of land; William who married
Elizabeth, dau of Jonathan and Martha (Carpenter) Moore had issue Jonathan, Martha,
Joseph; and Elizabeth who married James McLean of Clinton.
Herman: father of Jacob and Peter who later moved to Halton Co and founded Fisher's
Corners, married Elizabeth and sustained losses in the War of 1812. Perhaps the first
to settle in Clinton Township. His children, according to the Halton family history
were Jacob, Peter and probably George and John who served with the 4th Lincoln
Rebellion of 1837-38
William: who also served with 4th Lincoln in War of 1812
James: settled in Saltfleet and served with the 5th Lincoln Regiment in the War of
1812
Anna: married William Lawrence in 1797 and lived in Grimsby Twp
Margaret, who in 1813 married John Biggar of Saltfleet Twp
Martha: who married Richard Lanning and may have returned to NJ
Sarah: married John Smith of Clinton Twp in 1810
The following marriages of Clinton Twp Fishers are probably those belonging in the
above families:
John Fisher marriage 1836 to Jane Rhodes of Clinton
Peter Fisher marriage 1838 to Catherine Simmons of Grimsby
Catherine Fisher marriage 1832 to John Page of Flamborough
Susannah Fisher marriage 1840 to William O'Field
