Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Ron and Gail- the thing I don't understand is the death date for the Jesse Babcock who was married to Amy Duvall- don't you have it Gail as July 1881? The only July 1881 death reg. I can find is for a man named Jesse Babcock who was married to Mary Maracle and lived at Napanee, Ontario. Wouldn't it seem logical that this Jesse- husband of Mary Maracle and living at Napanee, would be the son of the Samuel Babcock who also died at Napanee? I am so confused by this, and by the multiple Jesse's.
Wouldn't the Jesse Babcock who was married to Amy Duvall have died in either Victoria County or Simcoe County and not Lennox and Addington County? In 1871 they lived in Hastings County, 1881 at Simcoe North and in 1891 widow Amy is at Victoria County.
Someone please shed some light on this.
Thanks from Nora

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Hi, I just discovered my great, great (possibly another great in there if you read further) grandparents were Napoleon and Margaret Lario, which has surprised me greatly! I received this info yesterday when I received the marriage certificate of my great grandfather, Peter Bakke who was married Marjory Maud Lario (went by Maudie) in Estevan, Saskatchewan on October 20th,1910. This marriage was witnessed by Margaret Lario who listed their religion as Free Methodist, the other witness being the Reverend, W.R. Wilson's wife, Mrs. M Wilson...Maud's parents were listed as Napoleon & Margaret Lario. However,my grandmother, Margaret Bakke Kleppe now deceased, told me that her mother Maud came to Saskatchewan from Ontario with her grandmother (Margaret Lario) to take a homestead so Maud's real mother was probably one of Napoleon's older daughters....probably an unwed mother I am surmising...so parents were given as Napoleon & Margaret Lario when she was married at age 22. Another surprise to us is that Maud's birthplace was given as Sacket Harbor, NY. We only knew about Ontario but after reading your information, it appears to be the same family as many posts indicate Napoleon lived between Ontario and New York...Would like to know more info about Napoleon and his children from 1st marriage with Margaret. Can you tell me if the name Lario is a French, Spanish or Italian name and background? Facebook Larios appear to be from Spain....yet Napoleon is a French name and some tell me Lario is Italian? Thanks for any help you can give me. My email address is sherrymebs@sasktel.net Thanks :)

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Sherry, I worked on the Lario family years ago- have worked generally on many Lennox and Addington County and Frontenac County families. I am not related. I do have a 14 page file starting at Napoleon's father Peter, but I am sure it can be updated quite a bit with all the new info that is available.
I spent several hours in the past day since I read your message here trying to get to the bottom of who your Marjorie was. Nothing leaped out at me, but then I started trying to find each one of Napoleon Lario and Margaret Goudy's daughters. Finally today I realized that the daughter I had recorded as "Euretta" Lario was Henrietta Lario- she married John William Loshaw, and your great grandmother Marjorie was their daughter, according to info that is posted in family trees online.
Some people have posted that Marjorie Maud was born Feb. 5, 1889 at Lewisham, Ryde, Muskoka in Ontario; another post has her born Feb. 15, 1890 at Bracebridge also in Muskoka. I cannot find that birth in the Ontario births at Ancestry and I cannot find a marriage for Henrietta and Williwm John.
I am not sure at all why Maud's place of birth would have been listed as Sacketts Harbor in New York, and not sure why her parents would have been listed as Napoleon and Margaret.
There are a couple of people that I see have posted extensive family trees for your Bakken family- Peter's surname seems to be BAKKEN and not Bakke as you had posted...so I would suggest you get in touch with them, they are most likely related to you. If you cannot access all this info yourself at Ancestry.com, let me know and I will write to you off this board and tell you how to find it all and how to contact the right people.
Thanks from Nora

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Oh Yes, Nora, I forgot to mention that Peter Bakke added an "n" to his name as he did not like the way it was pronounced by Non-Norwegians....Bakie and Bakka....My uncle Don Kleppe from Texas just informed me of this information yesterday when I called him to see if the Tornadoes were near him. He was quite amused to hear that we were sired by Napoleon Lario and disappointed that he could not have been named after him. Would have been a strong name for a Southerner :)

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Oh Sherry, let him know he probably would not have wanted to be named for him although it is a GREAT name! I think I told you about him serving during the civil war and his TWO wives fighting over his pension. My grandmother told me that my great grandmother (Napoleons daughter in law) has said from her understanding that you couldn't trust anything he said which is probably why the family story was a bit different than what we have all been finding out. However, I also wonder if it was an effort from the family to distance themselves from the Metis roots and from what I have been told, Napoleon was not very proper about alot and the Goudy family were all quite proper and religious people. I would love to know the story of how they came about meeting and marrying in the first place. I think he might have been one of those charming fellows that women fall for before they realise what they are getting into. I have one photo of Napoleon with several gentleman and in the picture it looks like he is speaking and all the gentlemen are listening to him even though he is clearly dressed as the handler of the horeses in the photo and not as a gentleman himself. It makes me wonder if he just had a really good gift of the gab. He also had to lie about his age to be accepted as a soldier during the civil war and gave his birthplace as Boston even though clearly, he was not born there. Not sure what is behind that. I would love to know more about him and hope one day to connect with someone who knows more of his story. Brenda Anderson timandbrenda90@gmail.com

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Hi Nora:
As you suggested, I would like to know how to contact the right people regarding Peter Bakken (Bakke)who was born in Vaaler I Solor, Norway and settled near Bromhead, Sask. in the early 1900s. There are soooo many Peter Bakkens especially in the N. Dakota and Minnesota areas. It was my grandmother's understanding in her writings that Peter emigrated to Wisconsin in 1902 with several relatives and then after hearing of land being given out to settle (probably after Saskatchewan became a province in 1905) that he set out on his own, left family, and took a homestead. Thanks for your assistance. Sherry

Re: Chalk, Byrne, Lario, Woodcock
Hi Brenda: Remember me? I too am a great, great, great grandaughter of Napoleon Lario & Margaret Goudy. I am interested in the Civil War Documents you have regarding Napoleon. Does it say when & where he fought in the Civil War....? I understand he lied about his age to get in...how old was he when he registered in the army. Who won the Pension case Margaret Goudy or Sarah Chalk? Thanks for any information you have : ) Sherry (Mebs, Kleppe, Bakken, Lario/Goudy)
