Saw your note about Nappanee, and am intrigued. Are the Cating/Keatings Amish? Were they in Canada because they left one of the rebelling colonies during the American Revolution?
I'm investigating some Keatings who may be related to my Catons, and they seem to disappear from Maryland in the 1700's.
Thanks, Nancy Caton

I checked all my Wilkes names and none of the names you listed are in my research. Kathy

Hi Nancy, I have not found any evidence that these people were Amish, they are all Wesleyan Methodists in later years. There are 2 Caton families in the Napanee area, I have searched both extensively and found that my family is NOT related to the large Caton family that includes Archibald. I do believe my family was in the US in Maryland in the 1700's. The names match as they disappear from the US and come to Canada in the late 1700's. The names that appear in both areas are John, Abby, Dorcus, Hannah. They were in Shrewsbury Parish, Maryland and then were baptized in ErnestTown in 1797. I would love to exchange information on either family and see what information you have. Please reply directly to me, Kathy

Kathy - I'd love to contact you directly, but your email doesn't show when I click on the top of the thread, and pressing "contact this person" gets me to a sign in for ancestry.com. Not prepared to do that at the moment.
Feel free to send email directly to me at

remove the spaces and parentheses above and replace with the @ sign and it will get to me.
The lot I know in MD and DE fought in the Revolution, or at least supplied the Colonial Army, and so info about a branch that went to Canada with the Loyalists would be most interesting. Happy to compare notes.

My Kaittings moved from Utica, NY to Oakville, ON Canada around 1805. Before that they may have been in Hunterdon NJ and Massachusetts. I would like to know from what part of Ireland they came. I think some of them fought at Lundy's Lane for Canada in the War of 1812. Two of them had a grist mill on the Humber River before about 1850 when tariff changes put them out of business. They also had a sawmill on Front Street in Toronto.
