HELLO

Thanks for your reply. I had previously found the obit for Joel Thomsons wife, Mary Estes at the TBaytel site. She died a decade later. Her obit was in the Christian Intelligencer. I am not sure of the best site to find the archives for these newspapers. In her obit her husband is referred to as Joseph Thomson. I have never seen any other reference to that name in any documents or census.

Hi I haven't checked - but the following=- might be helpful
https://news.google.com/newspapers?hl=en#C

Gove of Ontario - Archives - or perhaps a large University Library- may hold the early newspapers - Obituaries - in their collection. Many will not appear online - this takes time - and many dollars - or Volunteers - then the decision which papers to choose first.

Ontario Genealogical Society - May be helpful . contact them. there may be a branch in the area of Interest.

Hello

I actually have quite a bit of info on Joel Thomsons family. The only info I have on him comes from the Estes family genealogy. I have his birth and death date from them. They also listed his children and their spouses. I eventually found his burial info. However, I have never been able to place him in any Thomson line. I am hoping that an obit might mention his parents names. He supposedly was born in March 1775 in Kent, Litchfield , CT . I have found no trace of him there.

Hi: Would you have a John Benjamin Thompson born c. 1822 in Adolphustown as a son of Joel's?

I have five sons listed for Joel Thomson . They are Silas, Charles B, Andrew, Horatio, and James E. The last son , James, was born in Adolphustown in 1819. I know from the early census that there was a John Thomson in Adolphustown about 1820 with a large family.
The Estes , Joels in laws, have said that his father was a John Thomson but none of his sons or grandsons were named John.

From process of elimination- I can only surmise that John Benjamin Thompson born in 1822 in Adolphustown was the son of JOHN Thompson who appeared there in the 1822 census (and earlier). Joel did not appear in Adolphustown in 1822 and you have provided the names of his children. Can we presume that John and Joel were brothers? Do you know where Joel came from and who his ancestors were?

I do not know who Joels ancestors were unfortunately . Much of the information I have comes from The Estes family genealogies. Joel married Mary Estes In Dutchess County NY. She is the daughter of Benjamin Estes and Phebe Borland. The Estes were from Rhode Island. They lived in Dutchess County and Jefferson County NY. Joel and Mary moved to Duanesburgh NY in about 1800. They farmed in Palatine NY for more than a decade. The Estes say Joel was born in Kent CT in 1775. I have not been able to place him there There were a lot of Thomsons in Litchfield County CT. Joels son Silas married Jane ann Canniff in Canada. Two of Joels grandsons learned the printers trade in Canada and eventually settled in Auburn NY. One of them Charles James Estes Thomson is my great grandfather. I will check the census in those areas for Benjamin and John Thom(p)sons. Good luck in your search!
