Captain John Forgie, Olive Steamship, Smiths Falls

Would anyone know if or how Capt John Forgie was connected to the family of Forgies (ie, Gilbert Forgie and his family)who were part of the Lanark Settlement in 1820? I've come across a couple of references to Capt Forgie but can't see where he fits into my family tree.

The British Whig(Kingston, ON)reports on the 14 Apr 1888 that "the steamer Olive has again changed hands, John Forgie, Smiths Falls, having sold his interest to Mr Healy for $3000". http://images.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/15053/data

On 6 Jun 1889, The Record News (Smiths Falls) notes that "Captain Forgie, Smiths Falls, left for New York last Saturday and may possibly go to Chili [sic]. His brother-in-law [who?] has the contract of building a railway down there and he has offered Mr Forgie a good situation". http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~onlanark/NewspaperClipping... I imagine this is the same Forgie.

Many thanks,
Mary

Thanks, Lise, for forwarding this information. There were several men named John Forgie in the Ottawa area at this time and I think that the birth announcement probably relates to John Forgie son of Thomas Forgie both farmers in Kitley Twp.

But I'll explore further and will let the board know if and when the mysterious Capt Forgie is found.

Thanks again,
Mary

Sorry, but I'm not sure which link you mean. The 2 links in my original message seem to be working okay. Please let me know the details.
Thanks,
Mary

John Forgie, son of GIlbert Forgie of Lanark Township, is my GG Grandfather. He sold his pioneer farm in Lanark beside his father's land, and moved to Bytown (Ottawa). He became a merchant there and had a store at Sappers Bridge near the top of the locks from the new Canal to the Ottawa river. He became a town counsilor, and bank rolled the building of the Ottawa jail in 1862 (which bankrupted him). The same year, a mob burned down his uninsured business. He died in 1889 in Ottawa. He was not Captain Forgie from Smith's Falls.

Hi John: Great to hear from you. Your GG Grandfather, John Forgie, was a half-brother of my GG Grandfather, Alexander Forgie - the youngest son of GIlbert Forgie of Lanark Twp & his second wife, Margaret Stewart. I knew some of the information about John - and he is in my family tree but with a different date of death: 6 Apr 1884. I'll check my sources and change that to 1889. The story of the mob burning down his business was completely new to me. Poor man. I knew he couldn't have been the Captain Forgie from Smith's Falls - and was just wondering if there was any connection between the Captain and our Lanark Forgies. Would you be able to confirm if John was married twice: first to Mary Craig and later to Helen O'Connor?

Many thanks and best wishes,
Your very distant cousin Mary
