That John is my 5th great grandfather and thank you for that information. A piece of information I recently saw states that this John's grandson John settled on or around this land. The younger John would have been born in either New Brunswick or Nova Scotia and arrived in Ontario sometime before his grandfather's death in 1839. Not much to go on I'm afraid.

Have you checked the Upper Canada Land Petitions that are online? There are 3 references to John Nicoll: one in 1830 in Drummond Twp., 1831 in the town of Perth and 1819 in Wolford and Oxford Twps. which are in Grenville County.

John Nicol (1820 census) and John McNichole (?) (1822 census) are in Drummond Twp. I presume this is the elder John. But you say he died in 1839 so this entry in the 1842 census in Drummond Twp. must be for the younger John:
Nicol, John. Ireland. Concession 7, Lot 12. Year settled 1819. 1 born there, 3 born here- total of 4 in household. It is the same lot and concession mentioned in the 1830 Upper Canada Land Petition.

Jennifer I found some of this same information and wondered if this was him. My line comes through Ensign John Nicoll --> Peter Nicoll --> Alexander Nicoll. Peter would have been your John's uncle. Peter settled in the same area until jsut after his father Ensign John Nicoll's death, then left Lanark County for the states, eventually dying in California. He was also a convert to the Mormon faith, so it is possible that the connect to this other John listed as a Mormon living in the area is the right one. What else do you know about your ancestor?

Hi Jeremy. Peter was my John's son. I have a lot of info on John's descendants including Peter's family who went to the states. John's son James is who I descend from.James went to Nova Scotia and settled and his father and brothers stayed in Ontario. I know a lot about James and a bit about his Dad and of course Peter and Alexander. Alexander was in the 49th Reg of Foot and was made Fort Adjutant at Coteau the 14th of February, 1814. Here, his sister Mary Wilton Nicoll, kept house for him until she married.

John Nicoll was born in Scotland and enlisted in the British Army in what was called the Tenth Royal Veteran Battalion (afterward called the Fourth Royal). They were sent to the Island of Guernsey and there John Nicoll, married a young lady by the name of Mary Knight and all of their family were born - John Wharton, Ann, John, Henrietta, Alex, James, Peter & Mary. Sometime between the years 1812-1816 the company was ordered out to Quebec, British North America. Being late in the season when they arrived on the east coast, the ship could not get up the St. Lawrence River and the troops were obliged to winter in Sydney, Cape Breton. There James Nicoll, met and fell in love with a young lady by the name of Lucy Morley. After remaining in Sydney for a little time they went to Quebec and were stationed there until about the year 1821 when the regiment was disbanded and all the officers and men received land, a free grant from the goverment. John and his sons Alex and Peter and John remained in Ontario and James returned to Sydney where he married Lucy.

John Sr. died in 1839 in Lanark Co., Ontario and is buried in the Lanark Village Cemetery.
