I have some Lovells in my family. there is alittle confusion for me,regarding the different lOvells in Lambton Co.Ont.Can. one family, was a James Lovell,b.abt 1809 Engl.Native,of Somersetshire, England,son,James,b.London,Engl.,1836, immig to Can 1847,arrived Queb.lvd 2 yr. in Oshawa, then 2 yr. in Ancaster then mvd too Brooke Twp. Con 3 lot (13,) his son, lvd, Con. 3, Lot 14 Lambton Co.Ont.Can.-trade-carpenter This James Sr.b. abt. 1809 I have mar.too Eliza Brown b.abt. 1807,she d. June 2,1888,Brooke Twp.Lambton Co.Ont.Can. James Sr.b. abt. 1809 I have dyeing,1862.. I have 4 ch.for James b. 1809 and his wife, Eliza Brown. Then I have a John LOVELL b.abt. 1816-24,Engl.mar.tooElizabethDERWIN or DURBAN,This John,I had dth date of Feb. 7 1898 Brooke Twp.Lambton Co.,and his wife, Elizabeth I had b. abt. 1819, likely Engl. who died, Oct 27 1870 alt. dth date, Oct.29,1871, Waterford,Lambton Co.Ont.Can. I have FIVE LOVELL children born to them. This John LOVELL b. abt. 1816-1824,England, immig.1846 to Oshawa,Ont.Co. then in the fall of 1854 moved to Con 8, sideroad 15, had small shop on farm in 1854,moved,later by 1855,& on1861 cens.,settled, Con.6,Lot 19,Brooke,Twp Co. Ont.Widow,on, 1881,cens.Alvinston,Brooke twp.Lambton Co.,Ont.Can. both these LOVELL families have references too living in Oshawa,Ont.Can.before arriving in Lambton Co.Ont.Can. perhaps there might be some early records of them in Oshawa,Ontario County, Ontario (Province,) Canada. Oshawa,is in the County of Ontario, not to be confused with the province of Ontario. Though County of Ontario, is located, within the province of Ontario Canada. The James LOVELL I mentioned arrived FIRST in Quebec Canada, 1847, then mvd too Oshawa,Ontario County,Ont.Can.lvd,there two years..and then moved too Lambton Co.Ont.Can. Its likely John and James were brothers? anywhoo, maybe..the ship they came over from England on..was in about 1847, and landed in Quebec, Canada.. Hope this helps.. Nancy from Ontario Canada, not far from Alvinston,Lambton co.Ont.Canada where many of the Lovells lived.

Hi Nancy Many thanks for the reply to my message. Below is a reply to a message I posted in 2002 on Genealogy.com It was from a Bill Lovell of Ontario Canada. "It appears that we may have a connection to the generation prior to Samuel and Edith. I have a cousin who now lives in England and she has sent a family tree that includes your ancestors as well as mine, although there are some discrpencies. I have a John Lovell (d 1752) married to Martha Maine (March 29, 1733) in Cheddar who had the children you mention. John(2)b.1736, d. Aug 28, 1825 in Cheddar married Sarah Reeve b. 1746,d. Sept 1825. They had 12 children, one of which was James b.1783, d. 1849, who married an Ann d. 1853.They had 4 children. Another John(4)b. 1816 who married Elizabeth Durban b. 1816. Another was James(4) b1809, who married Eliza Brown on April 21,1835. These people all have a Somerset origin and most are from Cheddar.James(4) and John(4) came to Canada in 1846 and eventually settled in Lambton county, Canada West (Ontario). I have a fairly complete history from the time they settled in Ontario. If these people sound familiar maybe we can compare notes and sort out any problems. My email address is billlovell@rogers.com " Bill and I have been in contact since but he has yet to send me a copy of his tree. Which Lovells are connected to your tree? Yes you're right John and James were brothers. Their father was James Lovell b 1783 (som. Eng) and his father was John Lovell b 1736, John had a brother called Samuel b 1742 This is mine line which eventually came to Australia. Since posting I have managed to sort my way through a few Canadian Cencus, plus the canadian county atlas project which has given me vital clues. Are you the Nancy Frey who is on a Somerset Mailing List? Thanks again for adding a little more info to my tree Lionel Perth West Australia beechll@iinet.net.au

Hi Lionell, Thankyou for your reply. My full name,is Nancy nee Charter Goatbe. My mother, was Margaret Jean nee Forman, daughter of Russel Forman & Ann Campbell, my Great grandfather, was George Forman mar.too Annie Mellis. My Grt.Grt.grandparents,were George Mellis and Elizabeth McLachlin. My Grt.Aunt, was Jane Mellis born 1852,(sister of Elizabeth Mellis b.. 1857,who mar. 1884, George Forman b. 1848, my Grt.grandparents on mothers side) So, Jane Mellis b. 1852, mar. 1871, Henry LOVELL, b. March 23,1844, child,of John LOVELL b. 1816-24, who married Elizabeth DURBAN.John Lovell,s brother as you determined, was James LOVELL who mar. Eliza BROWN, 1835, their son, Thomas Henry LOVELL b. 1849, mar. 1883, Mary Jane BROWNLEE, their daughter Edna Emelia LOVELL, b. March 21, 1888, mar. John BLACK b. 1875, Edna & John BLACK,s daughter, was Helen F. BLACK b. May 15,1915, mar. a George MELLIS who died, May 5,1989, they had a daughter, Living MELLIS, who mar.a Living MARSH. So it would appear, that one of James LOVELL & Eliza BROWNS, Grt.grandaughters,Helen F.Black mar.a presently unidentified George MELLIS, and James LOVELL,s brother John LOVELL and his wife, Elizabeth Durban,s son, Henry LOVELL b. March 23,1844, a few generations earlier, mar.a Jane MELLIS b. 1852. So members of the Two, brothers, James LOVELL and John LOVELL, had some of their descendents both marry into the MELLIS families.I am not sure which branch of the MELLIS family that Helen F.BLACK b. May 15,1915, married..but given that its in the SAME area, of Lambton Co.Ont.Can.I can only assume, that Helen F. nee Blacks husb. George Mellis who died May 5,1989, is most likely a descendent of my Grt.Grt. grandparents George Mellis & Elizabeth MdcLachlan, who,s daughter Jane MELLIS b. 1852, mar.1871, Henry LOVELL, son of John LOVELL and Elizabeth nee DURBAN.So, in relationship to myself.. Henry LOVELL b. March 23,1844, mar.Jane MELLIS, sister of my Grt. grandmother Elizabeth MELLIS b.1857,wife of George FORMAN. which would make Henry LOVELL, son of John LOVELL and Elizabeth nee DURBAN, MY GREAT UNCLE..Thankyou for referenceing, your correspondent, Bill LOVELL, perhaps he and I have info to exchange as well.. And Thankyou..for confirming my speculations that John Lovell mar.too Eliza Brown and John Lovell mar. too Elizabeth Durban were brothers. And thankyou for the parents names of John Lovell & James Lovell, who I ascertained from your notes, were, John Lovell b. 1836,d.Aug.28 1825,mar.too Sarah REEVE b. 1746 who died, Sept.1825. And Thankyou..for the parents names of John LOVELL b. 1836,who I surmized from your notes, were, John LOVELL b. prior to 1720,who died, 1752, mar.too Martha MAINE,March 29 1733 Cheddar,Sommertshire,England.who had John Lovell b. 1736,who,had descendents, that eventually settled,in Brooke Twp.Lambton Co.Ont.Can. and your ancestor Samuel Lovell b.1742,who,s descendants eventually made their way too Australia. This has been quite a find. How wonderful, that so much has been discovered, regarding the LOVELL, family and their different branches, that originated in Sommertshire England.

"your words" I had dth date of Feb. 7 1898 Brooke Twp.Lambton Co.,and his wife, Elizabeth I had b. abt. 1819, likely Engl. who died, Oct 27 1870 alt. dth date, Oct.29,1871, Waterford,Lambton Co.Ont.Can. --------------- Although I have seen Waterford, Lambton County, on a marriage transcript of my own, it should be WATFORD. WATERFORD is two hours east in Norfolk County.

I am searching for my family tree. James Lovel and Ann married about 1806 in Cheddar Somerset England. They had 2 sons that came to Brooke/ Alvinston Ontario Canada. My great great Grandmother is the daughter of James Lovell from Brooke/ Alvinston. That is the end of my line for Lovells. I'd like to link them to the other Cheddar lovells. Does anyone have information about them? Thanks! Laurie
