William PORTER, b. 1813 in Canada, and Mary BOYD, b. 1826 in Canada, both of Sarnia, Lambton Co., Ontario, were married 16 June 1841 in St. Clair County, Michigan. Seeking information about any siblings or parents of these two in Sarnia. William and Mary PORTER later lived in Muskegon Co., Michigan and evidently died there. Will share descendant info.

Did your William Porter born 1813 in Canada die in July 1864? did his wife die before William and did he leave children named William, Thomas, Mary Elizabeth wife of Reuben Hollingsworth and Morella wife of William Courser?
If he did there is a great article about his parents and siblings in the Lambton OGS Newsletter called Lifelines in the September 2004 issue.
Many of the siblings moved to Muskegon, Michigan

i know my 2g grand father was in Muskegon. problem is i am not sure about his brothers and sisters or even the name of his dad. I think it is William porter. My 2 great grand father.. who might be the William Child spoken of here was married to a Sara Davison.

Generally the Michigan records are excellent and many of them are available for free on familysearch.org and on Seeking Michigan (website of the Michigan Archives)
The Porter family of Sarnia, Lambton whose family moved to Muskegon is the following: Thomas Porter died April 1859 in Sarnia. His wife was Mary Rupert Porter who died in Sarnia in July 1864.
Their children were: Peter Porter, deceased, left a widow Margaret, Lavina Porter wife of Horace Hall, (died 1881) Alexander Porter, wife Betsey (died 1899 in Traverse, MI) William Porter, dead left issue 2 daughters and 2 sons: William and Thomas Porter. Eleanor Catherine, dead 1865, Porter wife of Walter Paterson, Mary Elizabeth Porter, wife of Jacob Groat, Allan Porter, dead, married Phebe Patterson in 1841, left issue two sons: William and Thomas Porter born early 1840s. Lucinda Maria Porter, (1827 -?)widow of Thomas Ellis deceased, widow of Archibald Reid. Thomas Porter, Eliza Porter, wife of Henry smith and Morella Porter, widow of the late David Buchanan.
This is a list taken from a document filed in Sarnia in 1873. So the dead are from this date.
So you can see that makes quite a bit of Porter all with the same names.
Good luck

Although this didn't help the original person, it definitely helped me! I am a descendant of Lavina Porter and had come to a dead end. Now, if I could only find out more about the Halls.
|
It is quite likely that the Hall also lived in the Sarnia area of Lambton Co. The Porter family moved there in the 1840s. I would check the land they owned in Lambton, and look for a Hall family that lived close by.
Before Sarnia, the Porter lived in Darlington twp, in Ontario Co, Ontario and before that probably in Osnabruck.
Unfortunately the 1851 census of Lambton is missing, but there are some earlier tax records etc. I would contact the Lambton branch of OGS to see what they have to replace the missing census. They might have directories, tax records, voting list, etc.
I have more information on Mary Rupert if interested. Not much on the Porter, and nothing on the Hall.

Thanks! It would be very helpful having more information for Mary Rupert.
The Hall family moved to Sarnia from Lower Canada, but it does look like they lived in Whitby since that's where Horace and Lavina got married in 1831. I had always heard about a French Canadian background, but never knew details.
