Surnames: Hall Porter Rupert
Whitby and Darlington are next to each other. You might want to check land records for both township for the early period.
Quite likely they met there.

For more information about the Rupert see

Petition of Mary dau of Pader Rupert wife of Thomas Porter of Darlington
Library and Archives Canada. RG 1 L3. Upper Canada Land Petitions. Volume 407, bundle P 18, petition 47, microfilm C-2731A Petition of Mary Porter.

The Upper Canada Land Petitions are now digitized and available on the LAC website.

Kelly, Susan. Genealogical “Dream” Document. Lambton Lifelines. Volume 21, Issue 3 September 2004. pp. 37-40. This article lists the 11 children of Mary Rupert and Thomas Porter as well as many grandchildren.

It is possible that the Porter and Hall both moved from Lower Canada, usually for freehold land. But the names don't sound French. A lot of English families including Loyalists settled in Quebec, especially Montreal and Eastern Townships.

you can check the Quebec Protestant records in the Drouin Collection available on Ancestry.ca or the Quebec parish registers on familysearch.org.

Good luck

Thank you. The information I found prior suggests that they originated in New York or Vermont so it's possible they went into Canada and then moved west. Eventually, the family settled up in the upper peninsula of Michigan, where my dad is from, for mining purposes.

I just wanted to update since it's been over 3 years. I did find that my Lavina Porter (who married Horace Hall) moved to Marquette, Michigan and then made her way down to Green Bay, where she died. Her daughter married a Mark English, who was a prominent individual in both Marquette and then Green Bay and they had a daughter named Nettie English. I have had a photograph of a little girl named Nettie English for over 25 years (received from my grandparents' house) and I had no clue who she was until now!
