Whitby and Darlington are next to each other. You might want to check land records for both township for the early period.
Quite likely they met there.

It is possible that the Porter and Hall both moved from Lower Canada, usually for freehold land. But the names don't sound French. A lot of English families including Loyalists settled in Quebec, especially Montreal and Eastern Townships.
you can check the Quebec Protestant records in the Drouin Collection available on Ancestry.ca or the Quebec parish registers on familysearch.org.
