Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario
Having noticed a number of postings mentioning the surname of SCRATCH, I find it interesting that any family researcher would not try to find the original progenitor of the Scratch name, who was Leonhard KRATZ (this being a direct translation from the German name to its English meaning). He was a Hessian Soldier with the Hanau Regiment Erbprinz who was captured at Saratoga in October of 1777 as part of the Burgoyne army. I have written his history from date of birth to his death and final resting place at the shores of Lake Erie at Kingsville. Any of his descendants may write to me direct for additional information. I also have a long list of proud descendants living all over North-America, who have corresponded with me during the last 15 years. John Merz, rsearching Hessian soldiers of the AmRev.

Re: Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario
Dear Judith, I believe you have been looking at the ESSEX Message Boards many times and have left your own Messages. I have written about most of the names mentioned in connection with Leonard Scratch, the Hessian soldier Leonhard KRATZ, and you will find those messages just by typing in my name at the Essex board, as I did with typing yours in the query space of this Board. A beautiful system which makes it so easy to research. If you are not sure what happened at the Ruddlesfort in Kentucky, there is a Ruddlesfort mailing list with plenty of excellent information in it. Please try to find it. It is truly amazing what you can find with Rootsweb. Cheers, John Merz.

Re: Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario
Dear Judith, I am reading your last posting to this Board, and I can't believe what you are saying. You say that you are pretty new to e-mail, but your record says otherwise. You have posted hundreds of Board messages to this and other Boards, and in particular to the QUICK Board. But to answer your particular question - I have no info. for the names you quoted. My special interest was only for Leonhard Kratz/Scratch, a Hessian soldier, and for any other Hessian soldiers of the American Revolution Check my webpage http://www.cgocable.net/~hessianCheers, John Merz. host of AMREV-HESSIANS-L@rootsweb.com

Re: Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario
i have a book from the library called Ontario People 1796-1803. it seems to be mainly a listing of people that are uel. on the list is my ? ancestor James Stewart named after John Stockwell and Leonard Scratch as having New Settlement on Lake Erie. They are shown on 2 separate lists in this manner. Would you have any information on James Stewart? I would appreciate any info you might have re this land claim.

Re: Leonhard Kratz - Leonard Scratch, Kingsville, Ontario
Hello Betsy, Leonhard Kratz was a Hessian soldier, and Hessian soldiers are my cup of tea. James Steward or Stewart, apparently was just another settler in the New Settlement and appears quite a few times on the same lists (Major Close's) for land grant petitions etc. He is mentioned a few times in the 3rd. Report of the Bureau of Archives for the Province of Ontario, by Alexander Fraser, Provincial Archivist, 1905. Actually, on page 90 he is called a Loyalist, Sent on many Scouts. Whatever that means. Sorry that I can't help you more, but you are on the right Message Board. John http://home.cogeco.ca/~hessian
