Caleb Gilbert and Eliza Donahugh's family.

Surnames: Gilbert, Donahugh
Hello,

I'm trying to research information on Caleb Gilbert who was married to Eliza Donahugh. I found on ancestry.com a possible Caleb from Hastings County, ONT but have not been able to find anything via the internet. I believe Caleb to be born about 1850 because his daughter, Sarah was born in 1868 (according to her marriage license in the US).
The family emmigrated to Michigan about 1872 according to census records under Sarah (who was 14 at the time). I cannot find Caleb or Eliza on US Census Records and in 1880 Sarah and her brothers are living under Thomas Wood in Washington Twp, Sanilac Co, MI. I believe Thomas could possibly be an uncle to Sarah.

I am looking for a birth record for Sarah and any info on Caleb and Eliza.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

1851 census Sidney, Hastings County, Canada West [Ontario]

A Caleb Gilbert,3, b Canada West, is living with
Peter Sharp, blacksmith, 43
Mary P Sharp, 27
Esther Sharp, 10
?? Sharp, 1

Maybe Caleb is Mary Sharp's son by a previous marriage?

No relationships are given on this census.

There are 3 other Caleb Gilberts living in Hastings County who may be related.
Thurlow Tp, Hastings

Caleb 57, Sarah 40, Samuel 20, Caroline 18, Elisabeth 16, Sarah 14, Matthew 12, Nancy 10, Eliza 8,Wm 6, James 4, Mary A 2.

Sidney Tp, Hastings

John 50, Maria 48, Sarah Jane 19, Caleb B 26 [residence USA], John Nelson 16, Wilson C 13, Albert L 11, Emma Cecilia 9, Ann Eliza 6.

Sidney Tp Hastings County

This Caleb is 12, father Stephen, mother Deborah.

1851 census is being transcribed by volunteers and is free on www.automatedgenealogy.com
I don't know if Hastings is complete or not. I got this information from Ancestry.ca

No Eliza/Elizabeth Donahue found on 1851 census.

1871 Canada census is a head of household index only. There is one Caleb Gilbert, aged 30, potter, living in Belleville, Hastings. This is too old for your Caleb.

Have you considered the possibility that Eliza Wood is Eliza Gilbert and the Sarah, James & Walter are step children to Thomas Wood? That looks like a strong possibility to me.

I don't know much about US information but can you find a death for Caleb Gilbert in Michigan. It would be between 1874 [birth of Walter] and 1880/1881.
Can you find death for Eliza Woods? It should give her maiden name or find her marriage registration to Thomas Wood. Then you would know if she was Eliza Donohue Gilbert.
Good luck.

I thought I had all the Caleb Gilbert's in Hastings County tracked down, but you have given me one I missed. I have not found his parents yet, but on the same page of the 1851 census
where Caleb is found with the Sharps, Margaret Jones, wife of David, is the daughter of Samuel Gilbert and Susannah Rose. The brother of this Samuel was Caleb Gilbert.
I have found one curious record. There is a Caleb Gilbert, born in Canada, living in Washington County, MI that married Esmeralda Henry 22 Jan 1883. The given date of birth is off by a few years, but it seems very coincidental. I attached the record. What do you think?

I was just reviewing past documents. Do you think my Caleb was living a double life? Maybe this is why there are probate records for him in Port Huron in 1871? His daughter, Sarah, was married (1) in Sanilac County (Port Sanilac) to Hugh Adair. This could be why Eliza is listed as a Widow in the 1871 City Directory but that means he left her when she was pregnant with Dency. Hmm....

I reviewed the Marriage record and this does not appear to be the same family. This Caleb Gilbert went and died in Washington State. His family was from Cornwall.

I don't think it's him after seeing the name Sharp. I tried to do more searches and it's not matching up. I believe we are looking for someone in the Abel Gilbert line. We've ruled out John N and Stephen II. I think we are looking at either Benjamin Gilbert who married Densy Goldsmith or John A M Gilbert. I need to find some Wills or Probate records possibly. The names of my Caleb Gilbert's children are too close to the names in this family. (Sarah, Walter, James, Mary, and Dency) and his name being Caleb. I have the city directories for Caleb in Port Huron in 1870 and his wife is listed as a widow in 1871. There was a probate list for him in the newspaper but the library states they don't have it for that year. If he was born in 1841 like we suspect, Benjamin had a son John Goldsmith Gilbert born that same year and he died in Detroit. I have his death certificate on my ancestry tree and it can be found on www.seekingmichigan.org. My Caleb does not show up in the GENDIS (Genealogical Death Indexing System) the state of Michigan has on their website. This is driving me batty because I thought my Caleb was the son of John N Gilbert because they all came to Michigan.
