Descendants of Mary Georgina (nee Shaw) and Edward Cooper

..researching Mary Georgina Shaw(or Georgina Mary Shaw) born in Collingwood Ontario 16 Jan 1934 to Winnifred Chessell and John Andrew Shaw. Married William Donald 1951 in Toronto. 2nd marriage was to Edward Cooper. Mary Georgina died in Acton 05 Sep 1988, funeral in Acton 07 Sep 1988, buried in Collingwood. 4 children born in 1st marriage ( Debbie, Gail, Susan and William (Billy ) and 3 children born in 2nd marriage ( John, Karen, and Kim ). I believe that some of her children and/or descendants may still live in Acton, possible that Edward Cooper is still alive. A relative of John Shaw believes that Edward Cooper raised all 7 children and adopted the 4 children born to Mary G and William.

Mary Georgina's mother died when she was 2 months old and she was raised by her father's parents, Hugh and Susan Shaw, in Collingwood, Ontario. There was little or no connection between the Chessell/Shaw family since the late 1930's that this present generation knows of. Looking for information and answers. Mary Georgina is my husband's 1st cousin. Any information greatly appreciated.

Lynda Chessell

Re: Frances Maire, or Mair, or Mires of Norval, Glen Williams 1895 - 1940

Very interesting!!!

Since yesterday, I’ve been re-thinking this “native mother story” about my grandmother, Frances Mair. My dad said something that got me thinking that maybe there is no biological native mother.

My dad now recalls a conversation, from year’s back, that my grandmother said as a young girl she would travel from Toronto with her father, James Mair, to Norval/Glen Williams/Georgetown to visit people and family, while there my grandmother claimed that she would sometimes visit a native tribe/reserve in Norval. And apparently, while visiting this tribe/reserve, for the weekend, her father, James, would be “chasing & flirting” with the native women. My dad believes this went on for about 3 yrs.

I do believe that she had connections with native people, as she would teach me, as a young child, how to make native art; however, she never “preached” the native beliefs or history. I do remember her telling me, as a young teen, that I have native blood in me, however, I starting to wonder if this might have been a “story” that was told to her, but not the full truth of her biological parents.

Just maybe, Ida Young or someone else is the biological mother and not a native woman, OR just maybe, the story is true. This is a mystery.

Yes, I’ll contact you at the address listed.

Barb Bedard
Barb.bedard@yahoo.ca

Hi Barb,

I have found this curious marriage record that has lead to me finding many other records for you. It appears that Ida married twice, James Mair being her second husband. Ida's mother's name was Adeline.

The connection to the Marchment surname is through Ida Young, wife of James Mair. Ida's family is found on census in the Esquesing, Halton area. One of Ida's sisters, Bertha Irene, married William Henry Marchment.

Ontario Marriage Records, County of York – Certificate # 002415
James Mair, Age 30, Residence Toronto, born Goderich, Bachelor, Occ: Mechanic; Father: James; Mother: Jane Clarke
Ida Y. Urquhart, Age 31, Residence Toronto; born USA, Widow, Father: Francis; Mother: Adeline Williams
Witnesses: Carrie B. Wunder and D. Wunder, both of Toronto
Married 6 September 1901 at Toronto
Both Methodist, Married by Licence

Contact me at janegillard (at) hfx (dot) eastlink (dot) ca and I will send you the records I am finding.

Jane

Hi Jane,
WOW! 1994 is a long time for tracing family history; you are certainly an expert at finding information. For what short time (2 weeks) that I have been doing this, I can see myself enjoying this adventure for a long time. At 47, I wish I would have started this earlier, but I guess any time is a good time to search for family history. In a few years, I hope to return the same help to someone else, as you have been doing for me. “What goes around comes around”

YES, could you dig into the MAIR Clan, as I thinking that the Mair’s might be a smaller clan than the Taylor clan? Slowly, I’m getting some information from my father on his side, George GREEN & Helen Scott.

I’m also starting to understand some of the abbreviations used in the family & history documents. Good thing I work in a college, this is a lot of “homework”

Thank you,
Barb

Hi Barb,

Glad I can help! Genealogy is a wonderful hobby. I have been tracing my family since 1994 and when I hit a brick wall I take a break and help others with theirs.

I stopped looking for the Taylor clan because I didn't want to lose focus on your questions about the Mair side of the family. Would you like me to see if I can dig up more on the Taylor's?

Jane

Jane,
Again, you are amazing! You are certainly pointing me in the right direction.

My father has the early onset of Alzheimer’s and I’m trying to get him to work on his side of the family but talk about my mother’s side. This started out as “memory therapy” for my dad and is now turning into a great “family adventure” for the both of us!

Thank you,
Barb

You are amazing, this information is huge! My father has confirmed that my mother had a sister, Margaret Helena, who died before my mother’s birth. My mother, Shirley G Taylor, was born May 22, 1932 and died Jan 18, 1992.

I just need to find the death records of 2 sets of twins and 2 more unknown children. From the 4 names, found by you, (DOB:, Newson Clarence James - 1922, William Bryon - 1929, Margaret Helena – 1930, Sheila - 1936 Taylor) is starting to prove to be the correct timeline for the 17 children for Clarence & France Taylor.

Frances had 17 children. 10 died at very young ages (babies), 7 matured and had families of their own. As of today, from the remaining 7 children (known to me as my aunts & uncles) there are only 3 still alive.

(4) 1990-2011 - DECEASED; Isabelle Taylor, Mildred Taylor, Leonard Taylor, Shirley Taylor
(3) LIVING; Barrie Taylor, Clarence John Taylor, Wilma Taylor
(10) 1921-1938 – DECEASES BABIES: Newson Clarence James, William Bryon, Margaret Helena, Sheila Taylor

I’m new at researching my family tree and the information you have provided me has been the biggest help. I appreciate all of your help and assistance. A big thank you to you Jane!

Barb

My goodness, I think this is a good lead and very interesting of what you found! I’ve been told that Pine Hills Cemetery is where; my grandmother and grandfather are buried. I remember as a young girl going to my grandmother’s funereal and I do believe we went to Pine Hills.

I’m wounding, if it’s possible, that the reason why I’m having a hard time find my grandmother’s birth record is because her biological mother was a native woman from a tribe located in Norval, ON Canada, and was given up to her biological father and raised by him, (James Mair) and his wife, (Ida Young), at least this is what the “family story” has been, which I do remember as a young child my grandmother saying the same thing.

I currently have no names of my great grandmother or the tribe. I wonder if native tribes kept birth records of this sort of thing for that time period, 1900-1905. Would native tribes keep records for an “illegitimate child“ from a native tribe? So many questions!

Where would I look for names?

My grandmother, which I now believe her full name is Edith France Adeline Mair “Grandma Frances”, has a HALF BROTHER by the name of JAMES MAIR, which I only knew him as “Uncle Jimmy”, grandma’s half and only brother. I do not believe that there are any other siblings.

Thank you so very much for the lead, this is much appreciated.

Barb

Thank you. I will look into this!

As I mentioned in my first post, my grandmother had 17 children; 10 died, 7 remain. The child's death mentioned in your post could be one of the 10. I don't know the names of the 10 children... I'll have to put this on the list "To/Do Search List"

Is there any birth children listed for Clarence & Frances Taylor with the names; Leonard, Barrie, Clarence (Jr.), Isabelle, Mildred, Wilma, & Shirley?

I Appreciate your post and help.... I'll be glad to take any help you can offer! (I'm new at this tree searching)

Barb

Frances Maire, or Mair, or Mires of Norval, Glen Williams 1895 - 1940

I’m trying to locate my grandmother’s family in the Norval, Glen Williams, and Georgetown area during 1880 - 1945.

I have been told that apparently my grandmother, Frances, was born out of wedlock; her biological mother was a native woman from a tribe located in Norval, I currently have no names of my great grandmother or the tribe. Apparently, my great grandmother had an affair with a married, non-native man who lived in Glen Williams, with the last name of Maire, or Mair, or Mires. I was told that my great grandmother had 2 choices; (1) leave the tribe with the baby, or (2) give the baby to the father and stay with the tribe. My great grandmother gave Frances to her biological father and returned to the tribe. Frances was raised by her biological father and his wife; Mr & Mrs Maire, or Mair, or Mires. A son was born later by the name of James. I believe France was born around the year of 1918.
Apparently my grandmother had family relations of some sort to the families of Montgomery, MacDonald, Smith, Marchment of Norval, Glen Williams, Georgetown, and Milton area.

My grandmother married Clarence Taylor; they had 17 children, only 7 survived as the other had died of illness. The family mainly grew up in Toronto, ON Canada. My Grandfather has Irish and/or Scottish descendants; his nickname was “Red”. I’m unsure if he was born in Canada or elsewhere. I believe Clarence was born around the year of 1913.

I would be grateful of any help or leads.

Barb.

I'm just starting out with my research...

I'm not sure if my grandfather came from the Georgetown or Toronto area.

Yes, John was born in Argylshire, Scotland in 1784 died in 1854 in Nassagaweya and Alexina "Lexy" was born 1790 died 1860 in Nassagaweya, ON. They moved to Nassagaweya in 1931, but moved to Canada in 1930. spent some time living in Quebec, then moved to Nassagaweya a.k.a. Campbellville. I have lots of info from 1931 and on, but nothing prior to their arrival in 1931. I do know they moved here with 3 of their kids. Thanks

Google News Archives is especially handy because it is searchable. You can be pretty specific with your search words on this site, too, so that hits from newspapers in regions that you are not interested in can mostly be avoided.

I like newspapers as a resource in general because the older ones tended to carry 'gossipy' news such that people with unremarkable lives manage to get some coverage somewhere along the way. This coverage is sometimes useful in determining when a person was still alive or still unmarried so that a researcher can narrow down the possibilities for dates of these significant events.

J M Cochrane ended up being a newsworthy person and so there are more articles about him available on Google News Archives than the ones I imaged for you. You might want to check for yourself. His wife's obituary has eluded me, though.

Hi Wayne,
I'm a heritage planner for the Town of Oakville and am currently researching the property at 2346 Lower Base Line, which I believe is John Stout's farmhouse dating from 1865. Any information you could share on the family would be helpful - have you ever come across anything about the farm?
The 1877 Historical Atlas of Halton County shows the property belonging to Jno Stout and shows a farmhouse surrounded by an orchard. He is also listed on the 1858 Tremaine Map too.
The farmhouse still exists today, but is in very poor condition and may be demolished soon.
Thanks,
Sue Schappert
sschappert@oakville.ca

Fred, I will email you when I have more information on Paul Huffman's parents. Paul had a son named Tyler Huffman who served in the Union Army in the Civil War. Tyler was my 2nd great-grandfather. As is often the case, the ancestry of Paul Huffman was a complete mystery. Paul was married twice: first to Rebecca Crawford. After Rebecca he married Azubah Washburn in 1841 in Fulton Co., Indiana. Thanks for the info. Jeff

Jeff,

I am researching the Upper Canada Militia on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812 and writing veteran biographies. I have records for a number of Huffman and Smith men. Some of the Huffman men appear to be the sons of Christopher Huffman, including Paul:

Private Henry Huffman, 2nd York & 5th Lincoln
Private Jacob Huffman, 2nd York & 5th Lincoln
Sgt. Paul Huffman, 5th Lincoln
Private Philip Huffman, 5th Lincoln

Some men served in both the 2nd York and the 5th Lincoln so it is quite likely that Henry and Jacob also served in both. They both later lived in Trafalgar Twp.

You can find some of my militia transcripts at:

http://www.ogs.on.ca/services/1812-militia.php

where you will also find my email address. Please email me after you have worked out your connection to the Huffmans, as I would like to compare discoveries with you.

Fred

Possible parents of Paul Huffman

1851 Ontario Census for Halton County
Paul Huffman 60 yrs.
Phoebe 65 yrs. b-USA

There are several family trees on Ancestry.ca. with this family having 4 children, one being a Paul, who could possibly be your gg-grandfather. Unfortunately they don't go forward with descendants.

Paul Sr's father was Christopher Huffman [United Empire Loyalist], who came to Canada from New Jersey following the Revolutionary War.He settled in Grimsby in Halton County.

Google Christopher Huffman United Empire Loyalist and you will find a detailed biography on him.
Sandy

I am a newbie at Canada genealogy. My second great grandparents were Paul Huffman and Rebecca Crawford, who were married on Jan. 25, 1837 in Halton Co. Paul is listed as of Trafalgar Township and Rebecca was listed as of Esquessing Township. Presumably the parents of Paul and Rebecca would be found in earlier records in Halton Co. Paul emigrated to Indiana, USA, and died in Iowa, USA. Paul and Rebecca might have family that remained in Halton Co. If anyone knows anything of these two, it would be very interesting to me. Thanks.
I notice some 6 years after it was posted that, in your post, you have mention of a 'miscellaneous' Carradice, Thomas, son of a Thomas Carradice and Catherine Young Elliot and I just thought I would tell you of a marriage I found of a Thomas Carradice and Catherine Young at Hawick, Roxburgh, Scotland on 11 January 1841.I have the image of the Old Parish Record though the Scottish OPRs have very little information other than the date and people involved.Hope this is of some help.
I am looking for more informatin regarding John Campbell's wife Alexine ( Lexy) Buchannan, they came from Scotland, and live in Pq ( I believe) for 1 year before they moved to Nassagaweya ( Campbellville). I have been to visit the cemetery, but have hit a road block when it comes to Lexy. There doesn't seem to be too much info on her. I have info that I have pulled from our family scrolls that were all hand written and passed down throughout the years. But still not much on Lexy, so if anyone out there has Campbells from Nassagaweya, then we are probably related. John and Lexy are my great, great, great, great grandparents. Kimberly
