You might contact Mrs. Inez Riel who lives at Parklane Apartments in Haliburton, Ontario. Mrs. Riel is elderly but lived on the subject prpoerty for most of her life. Also her son, Edward still owns and lives on said property. Suggest you contact Mrs. Riel's grand-daughter, Cheryl Billings (Joe) 447-2358 before contacting Mrs. Riel. Hope this is helpful.

thanks for the reply Elva, but you have the property confused with another. I remember the Riels, but they did not and do not own the property on Bear/Glamour Lake. Right now the property has been broken up and sold for single cottages, but it was in my family, name Spencer, since the beginning.
thanks again. I might contact her anyway to see if she remembers my granduncle Neil.

I just found this website - wonder if you are still looking for information? My grandfather owned a saw mill in Gooderham, Ontario - not far from Big Bear and Little Bear Lake. He and my father and other relatives also owned property on Big Bear Lake. If you still need info I can ask my father. colette74@hotmail.com

Right you are about the location of the Spencer property. I must have been having a "senior moment" because I was the Municipal Clerk from 1967 to 1993 and knew Mr. Spencer.
I have heard that there was also a sawmill on the Reil property but I don't remember the details. I am leading a Community History Project of Gooderham and Area and would appreciate and input you have on the Spencer family.

Sorry about the confusion.....the mill at Bear Lake is not "my" mill. Never has been - doesn't belong to the family, never did, never said it did. The mill in Gooderham, however, once belonged to the family.

There was a "pic of the past" in the Haliburton County Echo a while back showing Spencer's mill on Bear Lake. The original photo is owned by Frank Madill - phone # 705-457-2217.
I am researching Gooderham and Area and I would appreciate any information you can give me about the Spencers'.
