Could someone please tell me how to research my great grandfather William Albert Leggett who was a domestic working on a farm for Mr. Beam and on the census in 1891. I would like to know how to find out when he came to Canada from England. I am guessing possibly 1888 or 1889 or 1890 because the 1891 census is the first that I see him on the census.I do not know which post he came from England and i do not know where he was born in England. I figure he was born approx. 1860 in England. Married in 1892 and died 01/01/1898 in Brantford Ontario.

Re: William Albert Leggett
There is a Wm Liggate, aged 30 arrived 30 Oct 1889, vessel Dominion. Port of departure: Bristol England. That's all it says.
On daughter Doris' marriage rego it only gives place of his birth as England. Sometimes you get lucky with place of birth, sometimes not.
I cannot find a marriage registration for them and there should be one if they married c 1891/92.
I checked the 1861 UK census but there are too many William Leggetts born around that time.

Re: William Albert Leggett
Thank you for the information. It looks promising. I had no idea where to start.

Re: William Albert Leggett
While the following transcript of an archival newspaper article does not relate to your specific query, it might be of interest to you nevertheless:
"...Wm. Leggett, a coachman, was upset out of a carriage at Brantford and killed."
Source of above: a column entitled "Canadian News" in the January 7, 1898 edition of "The Amherstburg Echo" (not a community near Brantford, but covering news from elsewhere in Ontario)
This report of his involvement in an accident is consistent with the cause of his death being registered as a "skull fracture".

Re: William Albert Leggett
I did not know that word would spread to other areas for something like that at that period of time. It is interesting to know. I will try to look into the newspaper. I'm not even sure where Amherstburg is, but I'll find out. Thank you.
