ANY INFO ON 'GEORGE HARRON' IN 1851 CENSUS LIVING WITH ELIJAH KINDREE

Surnames: HERRON, MINO, KINDREE, LINK
This young 17 year old man is my great grandfather, that I've been searching for, for over 20 years. A kind gentleman in Ontario has given me this information, and now, armed with this little data, I hope that someone in Haldimand can find something ANYthing, that would give me an idea of what happened. Before he left that area, about 1861 (preventing my finding him on the census), he also lived with Isaac & Mary Mino after 1851, growing up with them. I am trying to find any record of his being there in that area for at least 10 years. There HAS to be something! Is there an Episcopal church in that area (Cayuga) that would have been there during the 1800's? Any records from one? He seemed to read very well, but may have learned at home. (He had been let out as an apprentice by his father, according to family lore, but ran away from that, so probably didn't have much schooling as a youth.) He did marry Catherine Link, whose family lived in that area, parents being Jacob and Anna Maria (Mary) Link. But they didn't get there until 1854, so were in the 1861 census only. Interestingly, the Links (Catherine, my great grandmother) and the Minos (where George Herron, my great grandfather lived) were on the same page in the census, showing you how close those 2 families were to each other. But, again, I'm turning to the wonderful rootsweb folks, who always seem to come through for me. Now that I have George Harron at age 17 in North Cayuga in 1851, and later know he was married (haven't found that) and had 2 children (both probably born in Port Huron, Michigan in 1862 and 1864). I would like to fill in the huge gaps that still exist. George's parents, probably in the York, Ontario area, were Patrick and Mary Ann Herron (Herrin, Herran, etc.). Any help out there, please?

MRS. CATHERINE CLARK, REAL PIONEER, DIES AT WILSON HOME

Alpena has lost a true pioneer in the death, at her home in Wilson township, Thursday, of Mrs. Catherine Clark, aged 76. She had been ill some time of Bright's disease. Coming to Alpena in 1867 with her first husband, George C. Herron, Mrs. Clark had lived continuously in for 53 years on the Herron farm.
Born in Germany, Mrs. Clark came to America as a child and a few years later she married and came to Alpena county. When she and her husband settled in Wilson township there was no bridge across the South branch river and their supplies had to be ferried across that stream. All the goods they brought from the hamlet that was then Alpena had to be carried or were drawn by oxen. For one period of seven years in the seventies, Mrs. Clark did not come to Alpena once, because of difficulties of travel, though the distance to town was but 12 miles.
Mrs. Clark was the mother of 12 children, eight of whom are living today. She is survived also by three brothers and one sister in New York state, 23 grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren.
The surviving children are Mrs. William King, Mrs Henry Cochran, and Mrs. George Shenk of Wilson, Mrs. James Willet of Flint, Frank Charles and Fred Herron of Wilson and George Herron of Spratt.
Mrs. Clark was one of those sturdy pioneers who have made America great. She lived a long life and her years were full of service to others.

Yes. This is information that we all have. We knew where he was after he started appearing on censuses in 1870 in Alpena, my home town. It's all the data before that that we are trying to find. It's been a real challenge, since he didn't hit any censuses that we knew of until he was spotted in the 1851 census with Elijah Kindree. That confirmed George's story that he was apprenticed out by his father, Patrick, after his mother died, and that he ran away from that. We didn't know where he ran and hid until we found him with the Kindrees. (We originally thought he was born in upper New York, since at one time, he was listed as being born in 'York state'. We now believe that it was York, Ontario, where he was born, close to where the Kindrees lived.) He later showed that he had learned a lot of good carpentry skills, so figure that it might have been as a carpenter that he was apprenticed. Between 1851 and 1870, the stories we have include him living with A Mino family in the Cayuga area, travelling to Tennessee to hunt for a good life, returning to the Cayuga area to marry Catherine Link, etc. We want to find data about those years.

It came from a wrong assumption we made when we thought that George was identified in a Albany, New York family. The names of the parents fit, and there was the right number of children, and one was named George, but he was born in 1844. We thought surely this was him, and he had his age wrong, or had lied about his age, making himself older. Our mistake will outlive us, I believe. His actual birth date was in 1836, as his tombstone says.
