Hi,
I am searching for info on my McDonald\McLean family. The family story is that they came from the Isle of Mull and Iona.
They probably came to Canada in the 1840s (per historical info on one of the sons). They were:
Neil MacDonald ABT 1805 – 1850
Catherine McLean Macdonald ABT 1807-1871
and children:
Archibald MacDonald
1833 – 1922
Charles Elmer MacDonald
1836 – 1896
Duncan MacDonald
1838 – 1893
Mary MacDonald
1839 –
Catherine MacDonald
1841 – 1901
Christina MacDonald
1843 –
Hector MacDonald
1846 – 1911
Sarah Ann MacDonald
1847 – 1905
Flora MacDonald
1848 –
The information I have is that they settled in Grey County, Ontario. The family was living in St Vincent township at the time of the 1851 Canadian census. The family story is that most of the children were born in Scotland, although the 1851 census shows that they were all born in Canada. Also, that Neil MacDonald died in an accident falling through the ice, leaving Catherine a widow with numerous children. Indeed, she is listed as a widow on the 1851 census.

I have not yet been able to find the family on ship lists or in the Isle of Mull census.

Any clues anyone can help me with would be appreciated.

Hi,

This is a difficult one as the family appear to have left Mull before the first official census in 1841.

I would have thought your best bet would be to try and obtain the death certificates for Neil and Catherine in the hope that their parents are recorded on them.

A quick tells me that the children born on Mull were not baptised as they do not appear to be recorded in the OPR records.

Hi Ian,
Thank you so much for taking a look. I will continue to search for Neil and Catherine's death certificates. I am also searching for male MacDonald descendants in hopes that DNA evidence might someday help us solve this family mystery.

Hi Maria,
We had the privilege of visiting the Isle of Mull and getting a little more information. We have visited Walkerton, Ontario and found their library most helpful.. We don't have a lot of our research papers with us but would be happy to communicate. Please contact us. My husband is the McDonald descendent, but I'm the family researcher.

In Artemesia Twp Grey Cty we have a John MacDonald family buried in Salem Cemetery - their headstone says that they were native of the Isle of Mull Scotland. His wife's name is Catherine MacMillan. Their year of births really lining up to your dates but if you'd like to send a reply back I'd be more than happy to help. The above name family I have done some genealogy on.

I'm sure all the MacDonald/McDonald's from Isle of Mull & Iona are related. It only took us a day to drive round the island. Many who left Scotland, may have left in fishing boats and sailed to Ireland, hence, no ship lists from Scotland. Our family is Neil McDonald & Mary Black. Mary Black's father Hugh Black immigrated in 1847with his wife Catherine McDonald. We were able to find enough obituaries in the Walkerton library to help us get started on a family group sheet. It was a great start and we look forward someday to being able to go back and search for more.
