Irene Hanton died in very late 70s or early 80s. Allan & Irene Gray lived in Cornwall. Irene had a sister May Hanton married to ? DuTemple, then George Elmiger. May & George also lived in Cornwall (at least later years), but were buried in Montreal at Urgel Bourgie, Cote de Liesse.

I hope this helps.
Hello:
The 60 page book I referred to was written by Grace Y. and Bernard C. Froom in Nov 1975 . It includes a Dedication pg, a Forword, Key to abreviations, a Table of Contents, much info about individuals and a Index. It's very well laid out and quite informative.
Most of the Frooms you mentioned are in the book but I would imagine it needs updating greatly.
Regards,
Mary Lou

Hi Phyllis
William Poole died before the 1852 census and I do not have info on him for age, except PO: Ireland
Francis (Foster) is in the 1852 census living with son Jacob Poole in Escott, Leeds Co.
My information comes from the published Genealogy book for the Donoghue family, which included some infor on the Poole's. In that book, children of William and Francis/Fanny Poole are:

Jacob, b. 1794, Ireland
Robert, b. 1795, Ireland
Benjamin Jacob, b, 1798, Wexford, Ireland
Francis, (Female) b. 1800 Wexford, Ireland
Charlotte, b. 1817, USA

This does not mean there are not more and I do not know any more about William, I have been looking for years. I have personally seen Francis (Fanny) Poole Donoghue's monument and Wexford, Ireland is as clear as the day they carved it.

There are a lot of Poole's who immigrated from Wexford, around the same tiem, I have found them in Toronto, Dundas and even Ogle Co., IL, (where one of my Armagh Co. Davison went, from Grenville, Ont.)

I have followed your posts and if I find your Abel, I will let you know. Happy Hunting!
Laura

My question is did they also have a son Abel? What is the URL to it?
I am a decendent of Benjamin Poole[b-1798-Ire.)I have found no proof his middle name was Jacob.
Thanks,
Phyllis

I did spend some time in Watertown too - and it seems my entire maternal line is upstate NY - St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Clinton - and of course, Canada. Doesn't everyone from upstate have Canadian and Acadian roots?!?!

I now live near Akron, Ohio - real close to Oberlin.

You really made my day with the information you provided, Laura. I read your message about Ethel Tompkins (the one that everyone is trying to figure out who she is). YOu said that she was the duaghter of Reuben A. Tompkins and Sarah Toll.

Hi Dave;
The James Ferrier who was listed as a tea pedlar in the 1871 census for South Grenville, Augusta twp. and the one in Brockville in the 1881 census must be one and the same. He married Anne Waters, place unknown, and you'll find Anne also listed in the 1871 South Grenville, Augusta twp. She was listed as a servant, Irish, 25 yrs old, Catholic, born in Ontario.
I have no proof, but Anne MIGHT be the dau. of Patrick Waters/Watters and Mary Colligan/McColgan from March twp. near Ottawa. As a matter of fact, Francis Alexander Ferrier, son of James and Anne died in Ottawa on 6 June 1896. killed by lightning, born in Brockville per his death record. His parents were listed as James Ferrier and Anne Waters, living in Ottawa.
This Ferrier-Waters couple is very hard to follow. Other than Francis Alexander, they had a son by name of John James, borh 1875, and another by name of James C.born in 1880. John James was living in North Bay in 1901 (census). while James C. was still in Ottawa in 1901 living with his mother who was shown as married, but no husband listed with her. But don't know what happened to John James nor James C. after 1901. No record either of James and Anne's death. (Not the ones who died in Toronto in 1901 and 1908)

Frank Watters

Permilla (Milla, Millie) Buker was b. 24 May 1874 Bishop's Mill, Grenville, Ontario. She is the daughter of Alvin Vinson Buker and Catherine Steep. She married 11 August 1892 to Thomas Kelso in Spencerville. I have five children for them. I would be happy to share further information on the Buker families if you are interested. I would also be interested in comparing information.
Do you know the names of any of their children? With any luck one of the children's marriage registrations will have mother's maiden name. Sometimes the death registration has parents on as well.
Registration started in 1869 so prior to that you would need to find church records.

Hello I am also involved with the Rathwell saga. As far as I can determine Katie'ssurname should be BEGLEY. She was 2nd wife to John RATHWELL. He was the 2nd son of
samuel Rathwell & Alice Fitzgerald, Samuel was the 3rd son of Samuel & Catherine Fitzgerald. I am of the line of the 4th son, William. So, we are probably 4th or 5th cousins, once removed, or whatever.
I would like to share info with you. I subscribed to ancestry.ca only recently and found this message board.
Bill

Actually, being a pauper in the 1851 census could be a reason why an individual might have ended up in the colonies. Many parishes were still "helping" their poor move on, even past the mid point of the 19th century. Not so much out of the good of their collective hearts, but to save on parish chest expenditures.

that's something you should check in Scotland too, any parish records concerning paupers. The very poor also created more records than self-supporting individuals and families

Larry

This message is for Lynn Gill in response to a 2004 posting about Denis Donovan. I would love to email you directly since I believe Denis Donovan's wife Elizabeth Morris was the sister to my gg grandfather Henry Morris.

Henry had a brother John for whom there is a lot of information, Henry and John as well as their mother, who remarried a William Singleton, lived the rest of their lives in Portland, Bastard Township, Ontario

There is no information about sisters Ann and Mary. We believe that Elizabeth married Denis Donovan.

Over the last few years you may have found out more about this family line. Any information that you would have to help fill the details of the relatives would be greatly appreciated!

---Heidi (I share a membership with Mert Parsons.
I am searching for death records for my great-great grandparents, Francis O'Brien and Catherine Murphy. They came from County Wexford in Ireland around 1855. I can not find them in passenger lists. They are listed on Abbott Street in Brockville, Ontario, in the 1861 Census. They died around 1865 and were buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Brockville. A flat tombstone had their names on it. I would be most grateful for any assistance in my search.

Hi Frank,
Thanks for your interesting and detailed post. I haven't managed to progress this enquiry at all since last year. An absolute dead end it seems. The only reason that I followed the Canadian line is because I can't find any evidence of GFs death in the UK after statutory registration in 1855. As I mentioned in a previous post, she could have died between 1851 and 1855 and the old parish records are not good on recording deaths. However it does seem from subsequent family events, i.e. deaths and marriages that she is still living up to 1874 - she is not listed on any of the certificates as being deceased (3 separate occasions).
Of course she may have remarried but I have tried to find that out through the Scotland's People website without success. I think you are right in what you say about the 1881 census and the fact that Georgianna and James are listed in the 1871 Ontario census as being born in Scotland still makes me think that there could be a genuine conection with my GF - the ages match well but I don't know how realistic it would be for someone in her circumstances i.e. being a pauper in the 1851 (Scotland) census to embark on this journey. If it was possible to find an entry record for Canadian immigration that would be great but I don't feel it is likely.
Thanks again for your help Frank. I'll keep plugging away on this over the winter.
Regards,
Dave Robertson

Hi, you need to list the names with dates and info that you are looking for, [if you know any of that info], and then it is easier for someone to jump in... Where in Canada did your relatives live?? Mine were in the Ontario, Grenville, Kemptville area. My first relative that I have been able to find is Ambrose CLOTHIER and he is supposed to be the father of Jeremiah CLOTHIER who came to America in 1662 as a bond servant to John Vineing.
These are the family surnames that I have for this line of my relatives; Asa CLOTHIER BANKS, Mercy MAY, & Emeline GARLICK. If any of these names are connected to you I will be happy to help you, as you probably all ready know there is alot of info out there on the net but I would first suggest that you read Tony Clemments posts & comments (on this CLOTHIER board), they are very enlighting, and through his postings is where I learned that documention is very important for anyone looking for the histories of their families..
Good Searching,
Sandee

Have you tried searching for records in Ogdensburg? Go to the city website, www.ogdensburg.org, and click on the Vital Records link. There isn't anything online, but there is contact information. It's worth a shot, maybe you can find their marriage record, etc.

Good luck!

I think the next best step would be to try to get your hands on some obituaries for Lydia and Thomas. I would contact either the Brockville Museum or the Leeds & Grenville Genealogical Society. They may provide Deborah's maiden name, as well, may shed some light on the whereabouts of the other children.

Good luck!

What family are you looking at? Perhaps someone here is researching the same line.

In the early 1800's I don't know that there were many churches around, no matter the denomination. They may have travelled into Brockville, as Elizabethtown is just a stone's throw from there. Personally, I have found that a lot of my family's marriages were done in the home of the bride/bride's father.

You may try Bill Martin's Early Ontario Records ... http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/earlyont.htm

Mabel Matheson - Brockville

I am seeking information regarding Mabel Matheson. Thus far, I only have the information gathered from her husband's obituary. She was born Mabel Matheson around 1900, perhaps as late as 1910 and came from Brockville, Ontario. She married John B. Cayen (Jean Baptiste Cayen)of Ogdensburg, New York and I THINK that's where they lived when she died. She died giving birth to her only child, Mary Ellen Cayen. I do not know where they were married and cannot find a record of her birth, death or burial, just one sad name in an obituary after a short life.
