John Griffin (1789) - Finding ancestors

John Griffin was born around 1789 in the U.S. By 1840 he is settled in Leeds & Lansdowne (Gananoque Lake area and property out near Long Point). He marries Lucy French and has at least three children that I can identify. One son John Griffin (1835) marries Mariah Perry and is the primary ancestor for most of the Griffin's in the Leeds and Lansdowne Townships today.

My problem is that I cannot trace ancestory beyond John and Lucy. There likely is a conection to the Joseph Griffin UEL(1760)settled in Elizabethtown Twsp in 1784. But I cannot confirm this.

I would appreciate any assistance regarding either John or Joseph.

thanks

I am researching the WILLIX line, namely George who was born in Canada and I believe in Leeds Co. about 1820. Sometime before 1850 he moved to Jefferson Co, NY where his son, also named George was born in 1852 and married Matilda GRIFFIN abt 1874 (She was the daughter of Isaac and Cynthia GRIFFIN of Crosby, Canada). I found a Jeremiah George WILLIX who married Nancy COLE in 1819 in Brockville, Elizabethtown, Upper Canada. I am guessing that this Jeremiah WILLIX may be the father of the elder George mentioned above. Does any of this look familiar to anyone?

Thanks,
Ruthanne

I am tracing my Maloney family genealogy and would sincerely appreciate any help any researchers might be able to provide.

Five Maloney brothers (George, Thomas, John, Richard and James
and two sisters (Mary Humphries, Ellen Burchall), all born in the late 1790s and
early 1800's, immigrated from Cork County, Ireland to the Wolford Township of
Grenville County, Ontario. Thomas was my great-great-great-great-grandfather.
As I understand it, the township was known as Corktown because of the many Cork
immigrants settled there.

I have successfully located my Maloney ancestors in Wolford Township in the
1840, 1848, 1851, 1861, 1871 etc. censuses for Ontario. Many settled nad lived
in Merrickville. However, I have not been able to find any other records, or any
records prior to 1840. Based on the ages and places of birth of family members
listed in the censes, it would appear that the family immigrated there some
time prior to 1835.

Is there any assistance or suggestions anyone might be able to provide me? From what I'm finding out, land books, cemetery records and possibly
parish records are the next type of records I need to look at, having apparently
exhausted the census resources.

I'm quite enjoying learning about my early Ontario ancestry and
hope you can assist me to find out more.
Cook family in Lansdowne
I am not a Cook descendant but something came up last week that is very interesting and I would like to get some further information. While excavating for a cottage on Hog Island the contractor found a skull. An archaeologist described it as coming from a young person, 11 to 15 of European descent. Still need more details on this. In Susan Weston Smith's book, 'The First Summer People' she quotes the surveyor, in 1873, who described the island as: "Nearly all cleared, fair soil, has been 'cropped'. There is a small shanty on it, and two or three graves." I contacted Susan Smith and she said that was the sum total of info. for that island. In 1880 SL Cook bought Hog Island, in the St. Lawrence river, and it stayed in the family for a least 60 or 70 years (haven't had a chance to research the Abstract Index of Deeds yet for full details but Ruby Cook, who died last year at 100 yrs, talked about an aunt of hers who lived on the island and had a market garden there). Her branch of the Cooks were always 'River People'.
Do any of you know who was in those first generations - children, siblings, etc.? Does anyone know the history of the Cook's on this island? From what I understand Cornelius was the light house keeper at the Gananoque Narrows and had his house on Stave Island. The ruins are beside my brother's cottage. Cornelius, though, appears to be second generation, born 1823, whereas Silas (buried in the Stratton Cemetery was born about 1787 and died in 1842). Was there more than one Silas?
Would like to get an up to date genealogy of the family, especially children born before 1873. The graves may have been there for a while as the surveyor didn't seem to be sure just how may graves there were. The other possibility is that they predate the Cooks.
Any input you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I tried to contact some people but either their addresses weren't available or they bounced. Hope this reaches everyone with an interest in this family.
Paul Côté
My great grandparents Albert MACK and Elizabeth Annie LAW were married in Stephenson, Ontario in 1876. They are on the 1901 census for Stephenson, however, I have lost them between 1876 and 1901.

Their first child Margaret MACK was born 1877 in Ontario, second child George MACK 1880 in Ontario. Possibly in Gananoque.

I have searched the 1881 high and low for them and simply can't find regardless of name combinations I try. Also tried 1880 in USA since both parents are originally from USA. I've checked all of the Stephenson census records for them and for the period I am missing I can't find them. Annie's parents are however in Stephenson during that time.

I also checked the 1891 for Stephenson but can't find them.

Were all Ontario residents included in the 1881 census or were there areas not covered? I'm at a loss here as to where they were during that period.

Any suggestions?
Wendy Hogan
Ontario, Canada

A family "van Erp" came to Canada in fall 1953; and are believed to be in Brockville in Dec-1956.

I wonder if there is anyone able to check a telephone book of that period to determine where they lived in Brockville?

Does Brockville have city directories? I'd also like to see if any 1956 neighbours still live in the same place.

Are there any researchers that have pieced together the Soper family of the Frankville area?

I am a descendant of Benjamin Soper, born abt 1795 in Vermont (according to census records). Many of his children were born in Canada, and my mother was able to trace the family to Kitley Township.

I've seen mention of Soper and Soperton cemeteries, and I've found a Soper Inn, and several Soper households in census records.

After leaving the Frankville area, Benjamin moved to Hammond County, New York sometime before 1839. Who were his parents? Is he related to all the other Sopers?

Could anyone help me out here? I've hit another brick wall, with more to climb I expect, concerning my Jones' family. I'm stuck at John Jones, m: Mary Grant. Son Joseph Jones m: Catherine Ferguson. Their son James Jones m: Clarissa Oates, and in turn their son Norman Jones m: Eliza Jane Coad. I can't seem to find a thing about John and Mary though and haven't been able to find either of them buried around the rest of the family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.

I am looking for information regarding these surnames. The Gallaghar family settled in the Portland/Harlem area and from whence the rest of the family spread throughout Leeds & Grenville. Martin Douglas Brayman and Lucinda Adelaide Grue were my great grandparents who settled in Brockville around 1875. My grandfather George Wilson Brayman was one of 10 children born to them. Adelaide Grue's mother was Alice Gallaghar married to Peter Grue.

I have just confirmed my REA families path from Ireland.
William Rea received a military land grant in Goulbourn twp (Richmond Military Settlement) around 1820. He worked the land for many years until finally in 1828 he officially received the land from the Crown.
Before this time, he had rented a farm in Bastard twp from about 1827 until 1830. At which time he bought land in South Crosby which he sold in 1836. He bought another lot in Bastard township.
All this time he still owned the land in Goulbourn. In 1854 he sold the land in Goulbourn (for 5 shillings to someone with a surname Malloch).

I am now in search of the old Rea Farm in Goulbourn and see if I cannot purchase it and go digging for memorabilia. I am such a nut for family history!

I just found a lot of information from the Michigan Department of Education publication called "Family Trails".
I found my family in a 1979 issue and it states a diary from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rea who left Portland, Canada in 1883 because of hard times (workers were getting paid a mere $0.50/day) and describes their trip to Hillman, Michigan. They started up the Calvary Episcopal Church in Hillman.

My local library here in Waukesha County, Wisconsin has a lot of these Family Trails publications. If anyone would like me to research anything feel free to let me know.

Phebe MARSHALL/MASON and son Charles MASON, Elizabethtown area

Hi I was wondering if anyone could help my grandmother and I solve a family mystery.....and I know we all have one or two that stump us....

1851 Census Leeds County Elizabethtown finds Phebe (MARSHALL) MASON with husband John and Children, Henry (Johns stepson and my gg grandfather), William, Elizabeth, Joseph, and Charles. Charles being born abt 1850.

1861 Census apparently has John MASON with now wife Maria and Children, Elizabeth, Joseph, John and George.

so far have not been able to find Phebe or Charles in 1861. It is assumed from family in past that possibly Phebe died around 1855 but where is Charles then in 1861 as he is not with his father. from family records Charles died abt 1874 in Elizabethtown, New York, USA, but yesterday I came across a death of a Charles Mason 9 Mar 1875 in Division of Elizabethtown, United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. It lists his age as 24 and born in Elizabethtown. It also lists his occupation as an engine driver. the informant is a Thomas B? (I cannot decipher the last name it starts with a "B" and looks like it end with "ville" but I am not sure) He is listed as a Farmer in Elizabethtown

I have found a Charles MASON in 1871 Census in Brockville, Center Ward and he is listed as a brakeman, born abt 1850 in Ontario. I am interested to know whom he would be living with at this time as the other names for this household are different than MASON.

this new info if relevant makes my granny (who is 96) and I think that Phebe may have remarried herself and this is why no death certificate could be found and could also explain why Charles was not with his father in the 1861 Census.

Phebe is my ggg grandmother, my granny married into the Mason family.

thanking you all in advance for any help....
Debby

Nichols, Judd, Courtney of Bastard twnsp, Leeds Co.

James Courtney (b. abt 1827 IRE) marr. (bef 1850 ONT) to Diantha Nichols (b. 1818 ONT). I Found them in the 1861 Census (p. 49) Bastard twnsp. Children: William H. (b. 1850), Eliphatet (b. 1852), Sarah G. (b. 1853), John E. (b. 1858), George M. (b. 1860) and Francis (m) (b. 1862). Family moved to Jones Co., IA bef 1870.

Need ideas on Courtney research: 1861 census listed as Ch of Eng (from Ulster?) - Courtney was a 'shoomaker' (sic). I can't find James and Diantha in 1851 Leeds census - Critical. Be great to find their marriage and Courtney's immigration.

Several LDS tree files list wife Diantha as daughter of David Nichols and Sarah Judd - loyalist family from VT. And Indeed, 1851/1861 Ont/Leeds/Bastard: The David Nichols family. But no info listed on LDS trees, and lots of Nichols and Judds in area. Be great to have some facts. Any ideas for this Leeds research would be appreciated!

The oldest newspaper in the Tuscola County area has been digitalized (and, the answer to all our prayers, INDEXED!) To check it out go to: http://www.rawson.lib.mi.us/ and follow the links to the Cass City Newspapers. Both the Novesta Township and Elkland cemetaries are also there with searchable bases. My people who came from Kitley to Tuscola were WALLACE and KINNAIRDS.

I would like to contact descendants of Robert Cochran (1807-1874) and his wife Eliza Christie (1812-1889) who farmed in Oxford Township in County Grenville. Robert & Eliza were born in Ireland. She was the daughter of Matthew Gawn Christie of Matilda Township, County Dundas. Their children were:Gawn, Margaret Ann, William John, Robert, Eleanor, Margaret Elizabeth Jane, Isabella, & Fanny. The family came to Oxford Township about 1849 from Argenteuil County, Quebec.

Other Immigrants from Armagh to Kitley area abt. 1830?

Does anyone have ancestors who come from Armagh around 1830 to the Kitley area? If you know place more specifically, does anyone have Tynan or Cavanagarvan ties? Does anyone have people who came from Ireland, but might have only been there briefly after originating in Scotland? My family details are as follows:

Nancy Dazell/Dolzell/Deziel arrived in Ontario (Kitley, Leeds County) in approx.1831 with her husband Robert Mooney. Both were older, Nancy born about 1779 and Robert about 1776. They are reported as Irish and coming from Tynan, Armagh. (I suspect the townland might be Cavanagarvan.) They are Presbyterian. Arriving with them are their children, all reported as being born in Irelend except #1 son who consistently shows as being born in Scotland. I don't think this is in error because Henry reports being born in Scotland through every census, and his siblings report "Ireland". Robert Mooney and wife Nancy's hildren and approx. birthyears are follows:

1. Henry 1804
2. Nancy Mooney WALLACE 1806 traveling with husband James WALLACE (a Scot?) and their baby daughter Anne born about 1827 in Ireland
3. William 1811
4. John 1816
5. Jane 1819
6. Robert 1822
7. Margaret 1828.

I think the immigration group also contains people with surnames BELL and McClure.

They buy land in 1832 and live in Leeds County not far from a Robert DOLZELL (born about 1789 in Ireland) and his wife Margaret (?). I suspect that Robert is a brother or cousin of Nancy DOLZELL.

In 1846 Thomas DOLZELL (born about 1778) arrives in NY in the ship Silas Holmes from Liverpool with a stated intention of staying in the US, but by 1851, Thomas, a weaver by trade, is in Kitley staying with his niece ( I think) Jane WALLACE BLAKELY.

Any connections to or information about these people would be appreciated. I am trying to put together some other names since I suspect they came as a group---Mooney, Wallace, Dalzell, McCrum, McClure, Bell etc.

I hope to be in Belfast in the spring doing research and want to do as much "at home" stuff as I can.

Thanks in advance for any help, hints, family ties, etc.
Mackenzie Rebellion; The Battle of the Windmill, 1838

My great-great grandfather, James White, was born in Surrey, England in 1800, and came with his wife and children to the Kemptville area in 1832. About 1846, the family moved to the Beachburg area in Westmeath, where descendants still live.

I have just learned, from a Peterborough area history book published in 1884, that my great-great grandfather James White was in a militia group involved in defending against the Mackenzie Rebellion, and that he fought at the Battle of the Windmill (near Prescott, in November, 1838). I don't know the name of the militia group of which he was a member, and am looking for help in finding the name of the group, and hopefully, a listing of the names of the members of that militia group.

Can anyone please help me?

Thank you in advance,

Arnold White

Campbells in Leeds and Grenville

I have located a Campbell family in Augusta (and other parts of Leeds and Grenville) which is UEL - James and Alexander Campbell were sons of Duncan Campbell and came from the Argyll Land Patent in NY after the revolution. They were given land in Leeds and Grenville. They were part of the Loyal Rangers under Jessup.

In the front of the Book Brockville a Pictorial History (1972), there is a part of a map drawn in 1785 and 1787. Jessup and other names from the Rangers list are shown clearly but only part of the map is there. My question is twofold:

1. Where can I find the whole map to see where our Campbells were granted land ?

2. How can I locate the old lots and concessions on a modern map ? I have James Campbell's will 1813 which notes all his property by lot and concession number but do not know if the numbers are still the same today or not.

You can contact me directly at ann.belanger@powergate.ca

Thanks

ANN
Stoddarts of Elizabethtown

Does anyone have information on Robert Stoddart and his wife Jane Parsons, originally from Leitrim, Ireland (believed Carrigallen), emigrated to Canada abt 1819, and apparently spent their first several years in the Elizabethtown/Brockville area.

This is what I've been able to piece together so far: Quebec's Drouin Collection shows that their son Robert died in Montreal on July 3, 1819 (death registration also confirms they were from Leitrim, Ireland). Daughter Esther (my GG grandmother) is recorded in Wesleyan Methodist Registers for Brockville & Vicinity as being born on Aug 20, 1820 and baptized in October same year. Robert & Jane had at least 11 children -- believe Joseph, b. 1798 in Carrigallen, was eldest. Other children include William and John (b. 1825 in Brockville).

Robert Sr. and Joseph both obtained land grants in Lanark County (deeds 1825). Robert Sr. died in 1828 and Mrs Jane Stoddart remarried in mid-1830s to a William Henry. Son Joseph lived to 107 yrs -- residing in Lanark until last years of his life, when he went to live with his nephew Robert Stoddart (son of William Stoddart) in Elderslie, Bruce County.

Esther married John Churchill in Lanark in 1840 (brother Joseph gave his permission for her to marry) and went to live in Renfrew County. She had at least 5 children, then died sometime around 1855 but cannot find any record of date and place.

Despite the fact this was a large family, there seem to be few records. If you have connections to this line of Stoddarts from Ireland who settled in Elizabethtown/Brockville, I'd love to hear from you.

Being new at this machine, it might take a while to figure out how to answer anyone who may wish to reply to my question. My thanks in advance. Has anyone come across the John and Annie Crosier/Crozier of the 1881 Census in Hullett, Huron Centre, Ontario. I am trying to tie Alice Crosier born 1871 to James Gilbert Forgie of the Forgie clan in the Ottawa Valley area ie Almonte/Pakenham/Renfrew.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone regarding the Perkins family of North Crosby, Leeds Grenville, Ontario, Canada.

My grandfather was Joshua Frederick Perkins. He was born in Westport, Ontario and was married to Helen Mildred Wright.
His parents were Jonathan Alexander Perkins and Mary Elizabeth Donaldson of North Crosby.
His grandparents were Joshua Perkins and Ann Stone.
His great grandparents were Francis Perkins and Sarah Sly.

I am trying to research my grandfather's family and can't find much beyond the few records in Ancestry.com. Anyone who might know more or might have any stories or pictures of the family, I would love to hear from. Jim
I am trying to identify all the descendants of John Holden Streight and Jane McDowell who came to Canada from Ireland in 1836 and settled in Augusta Township, Grenville County. We still own and farm much of the original homestead. I have virtually completed several branches but have major work to do on others. I am particularly in need of help for the daughters, Margaret (married David Robinson, then Joseph Waugh) who moved to Illinois then Nebraska, Elizabeth (married Archibald Atchison) who moved to Illinois and the children of Mary (married John Atchison) who moved to Hannah, North Dakota.
