Hello,

I thought I would post this query again in case there are new people on the list who might point me in the right direction.

Hello,

I am researching Thomas SEYMOUR (born Dec 29, 1856 in Valetta, Malta;died September 27, 1937 in Windsor, Nova Scotia). His obit mentions a son, Charles, living in Prescott, Ontario. I would like to find an obit for Charles as well as marriage & family info, if he did marry.

Is anyone researching this family? Can you direct me to resources that I might search for his obit?

Regards,

Pamela Wile

Hi Pamela,

I am not researching this family, but on Ancestry.com Charles Seymour is listed in voters lists in 1938 and in 1949, as a moulder living in Prescott.

In 1908 there is a birth for a daughter Eliza in Morrisburg, which is in the united counties of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry. That record gives the date of his marriage as 18 SEP 1907 at Morrisburg. It also gives him a middle initial of J. I am attaching a copy of the birth record to this reply. The handwriting is pretty bad for his wife's maiden name, but at least that should lead you to the 1911 census for the family, or earlier censuses for him with being able to differentiate by occupation.

There is no death record for him because of privacy laws since the 1938 deaths are the latest released. However, you may be able to find something in cemetery records.

You might want to contact the Grenville Co. Historical Society in Prescott for further assistance. They do research for a nominal fee and may be able to lead you to the newspaper for his obit, etc. Their website is: http://web.ripnet.com/~gchs/ If you email them, please be aware that the volunteers are only in the library on Tuesdays during the winter.

Good luck!

I looked for marriage registration on Ancestry.ca for a Charles and Ella which would give parent's names but no luck.

Death registration Book 301, Page 287
Hants Windsor NS
Thomas Stephen Seymour, married, b 26 Jan 1853 Isle of Malta, died 27 Sep 1937 Windsor NS, aged 84, labourer, wife: Alice Seymour, father: Charles Seymour b England, mother not given, informant: Arthur F McLean, brother in law, of Windsor NS. Burial: Windsor NS 29 Sept 1937.

Wife Alice Georgina Seymour died of breast cancer, 30 Nov 1937.
Maybe her obit has some more information on it.

Thomas S Seymour, 45, married Alice McCann, 35, at Windsor NS.
He was born Malta Mediterranean, s/o Charles & Catherine, soldier.
Her parents were George & Mary.
Witnesses: Fred Pratt and Sarah Smith.
4 May 1898 Hants Windsor NS

1901 census Hants Windsor NB
SEYMOUR
Thos, 2 Dec 1856, 44, labourer
Alice, 9 April 1862, 38
Charles, father, widower, 5 Jan 1820, 81, b England, immigrated 1860.
C J, nephew, 4 Jan 1879, 21, b Nova Scota

1911 census Hants
SEYMOUR
Thomas, Dec 1855, 55,
Alice, Apr 1862, 59
George McCann, father in law, widower, Jun 1835, 76

Enumerator has them all born Nova Scotia but census are notorious for wrong information.
Marriage and death registrations have him born in Malta.

It would seem from this that they didn't have any children.
Could CJ, nephew, on 1901 census, be the Charles mentioned in obituary?

I don't have anything on Charles except his birth parents names.
His father was born in Malta to Charles and Catherine (Goolden) (Little) Seymour.
Charles was a member of the 63rd BTN. If you find anything on him I would be interested in knowing as well genealogy@bellaliant.net is my homr e-mail address, much easier than using Ancestry as a middle man.

Charles Seymour (41), wife Ella (36) and daughter Irena (12) were living in Brockville, Ontario in 1921.

Charles was listed as born in Ontario, his father was born in Malta, and his mother was born in Canada.

BUT the 1881 Census finds the Seymour family living in Windsor and little Charles (1) is listed as born in Nova Scotia.

In 1911 Charles (31) was living with his in-laws in Morrisburg. The census listed him as born in Ireland.
