Gananoque Reporter January 8, 1916:
Death of M. Shurtliffe
Mr. Melbourne Shirtliffe passed to the great beyond last Monday night about 12 o'clock.
Mr. Shirtliffe was born in the State of Vermont in the year 1832 and came with his parents to this country in early life and settled in the vicinity of Halstead's Bay. He followed farming for a living.
He married Lizzie Shipman, daughter of the late David Shipman.
They had two sons and one daughter. The children are George of Hamilton, and Edward and Mrs. Aaron Dano Jr. of Gananoque.
Mr. Shirtcliffe was a kind, genial and very jovial man. Always enjoyed a joke. He was a man well liked by all who knew him. He was a Liberal in politics and Methodist in religion.
He died trusting fully in the merits of Christ. Rev. Dr. Cooper preached the funeral sermon on Wednesday from the text contained in Revelations, 7th, 13th and 14th verses.
His sermon was very good. The hymns were: "Rick of Ages, Cleft for Me," and "Shall We Gather at the River."
"So Jesus slept; --God's dying Son
Passed through the grave and blest the bed.
Rest there, blest saint, till from his throne,
The morning break and pierce the shade."
