We are looking for information leading us to some family ancestors, William Knapp 1816-1890 Charlotte Brass 1817 - 1902- Their tombstone is in the Halladay Burial Ground in Elgin, but that is all we know, and we would like to know more.

This couple were married in Beverley (Delta), Ontario on March 11, 1838 by Rev. Peter Scofield. William Knapp was a resident of Lansdowne Twp. and Charlotte Brass resided in Leeds Twp. The published census records for the Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne Twp. lists a household headed by William Knapp in the years 1839, 1840 and 1841. The published census of Bastard Twp. for 1851 lists the family of William Knapp and his wife Sophia with eight children. It appears that Charlotte preferred the name Sophia; Sophia Knapp, age 83 last appears as a head of household in the 1901 census of Bastard Twp. with her son, Morvaldin (37), daughters, Philinda (49)and Pamela (13).
The Brass family was in Pittsburg Twp., Frontenac Co. in the 19th century.

Thank you for replying, We have found their tombstone in Elgin, ON, in the Halladay Burial Ground, but with talking to the records keeper for that cemetery, there isn't any records to say that this couple is actually buried there. It seems as though Charlotte appeared out of nowhere, as I can't find any of her history, but I will certainly see what I can find in Pittsburgh Township Records. Any information that I have found previously, she is referred to as Sophia Charlotte, (the same name that one of her daughters has)

Not familiar with Wm Knapp and Charlotte Brass, but do know many Knapps, Slys and Powells in the Elgin area. If you could give some more details, maybe I could fit them in. Harold Knapp

Thank you for offering to help. When William and Charlotte got married, the registration says that William Knapp was from "Lansdowne" township, front or rear I don't know. It said that Charlotte was from "Bastard" township. I've since learned they lived on Hartzgravel Road, Delta-Elgin area. When they got married Ira Schofield and William Gilbert were the witnesses. Ted Lake from Elgin area says he remembers hearing his family talk about the "Knapps", as they had a very large family and he knows the house where they lived. We have also been told that William's mother was named Jerushia, but we can't prove or disprove that fact. There was also a second marriage of William's mother and I believe the surname was "Lawrence".
We are very interested as well in their son Joseph F. Knapp, as he was my great grandfather. We know very little about him and his wife Margaret Anne Ewing. It appears as though Mrs. Ewing may have been pregnant with Margaret when they came here from Scotland.

I would be interested in your information on Jerusha Lawrence as William Knapp's mother. My gggrandfather Jonathon Pope married a Jerusha (Gerusha)Lawrence at Leeds in 1829. She was the daughter of Robert Lawrence and Ruth Farnam. He died in 1849 leaving his wife and nine children. There is no sign of my Jerusha (Gerusha)after 1861.

Thanks for replying. I afraid that I can't tell you much yet, I have been talking to so many people with only vague details. The story about "Jerusha" was that he/she lost their mate. He/She remarried a person with the same name, so they ended up being a couple with both having the same first name. The surname of one of them was supposed to be "Lawrence". There is another story of the surname being "Gilbert". I have to speak to another person tomorrow who might be able to open some doors, so bear with me until I see what I can find out. Donna

Surnames: GILBERT, LAWRENCE
Before I head to Leeds Co. tomorrow I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth on your Lawrence/Gilbert connection. I helped Brian Haskin in Kingston, ON with this family in 2002 as they are in his ancestry.

Elihu Lawrence married Jerusha Gilbert, ca 1798/99. Elihu died in 1812. One of their daughters, Lydia, married Uri Haskin. Anyway, the Gilberts are in the early censuses in the tables in the back of Glenn Lockwood's book The Rear of Leeds & Lansdowne, the Making of Community on the Gananoque River 1796-1996.

Jerusha Gilbert was born ca 1778 and died 6 MAR 1859. She had remarried after Elihu's death as her name at death was KNAPP. She was a Knapp and widowed in the 1851 census and is buried in the Haskin Family Cemetery on Earl Lake's property. This cemetery was documented in 1989 by Ken Pratt in Denver, Colorado, who also descends from Uri Haskin. Ken is a cousin in our Parish family, which is my connection to him. The L&G Branch library at the museum in Brockville has the listing of the burials there.

Jerusha Gilbert was the daughter of John & Anna Gilbert. John appears in the 1796 census of Augusta Twp. but is in the Rear of Lansdowne by 1803. He died in Apr 1852 at the age of 92+ and is buried at Soperton. John and Anna Gilbert had at least 8 children that we found.

I will email Brian to have him check this query thread and perhaps contact you if he can help more, as I didn't keep a lot of information on them.

Hope this helps a little!

Interested in your Margaret Anne Ewing (m. Joseph F. Knapp). Do you know parent's names and if they might have been from the area of Duns, Berwickshire? Year of immigration? Other info? I have no direct connection to the Ewings but information might be helpful in backing into a solution for a Haig problem. There was an Isobella Ewing (b.c1760) married to a Thomas Haig (b.c1760) ... with a family of six ... who arrived in Northumberland County in 1834 (brig "Peace" via New York & Erie Canal)and there is some connection to the Haig family of Leeds County.

All we know is that her father's name was James, and the family came from Scotland. I can't find traces of her anywhere. But I will keep looking and get back to you.

I know of no Thomas Haig married to an Isabella Haig, nor any connection of "my" Haig family to Baltimore. "My" Haig family originated in Berwickshire (Duns) and I could put you in touch with a group interested in all Haigs from that approximate locale. Please contact me directly at scdhrcda@hughes.net

aAndrea, Do get in touch with Allen Clark or myself. Thomas haig did marry Isabella Ewing. It is interesting that you have found another surname for her-Allen. She may have been married before. I have children for him born before 1805 so she could be his 2nd wife.
You are definitely related to us.Please do get in touch.
