Hi,
I found the will of James McDonell, husband of Catherine Grant of Charlottenburgh. The will was recorded on 23 June 1838. Evidently James and Catherine had no children. James left everything to his wife Catherine except the property that he had applied for from the government (on a land petition), which he left to his grand-nephews, John and James McDonell, sons of Angus. After Catherine died, James wanted the property to be divided equally between his grand-nephews James and John McDonell and Catherine's nephews John and Duncan Grant. I'm not sure yet, when the will was probated. Does this family sound familiar to anyone? I'm wondering if this Catherine Grant is the sister of my ancestor, Peter Grant who lived on Lot 10 on the front and his sons John and Duncan Grant.

Thanks so much,
Barb Gressel

Hi, Depending on When Catherine McDONELL - nee GRANT - passed away -
The Registration of Death / Long Form Death Certificate - may show the names of at least one of the parents - which might prove connection to your research inerests
Land Records - might be interesting to follow up - to see if all of the persons mentioned - obtained their portion of the property - and follow up the history of the land - to date
All land transfers - sales - are registered -

Thanks Sstanger,
I have ordered many microfilms containing probate records and land transfers. The will was written and recorded in 1838. To date, I have not found much on this family, it seems as though they had no children and were giving their estate to their nephews John and Duncan Grant. And their grand nephews. James and John McDonell.

Most of the land records that I saved copies were for Grants but not McDonells. Sigh. . . I guess you never know what you need.

Do you think that they had Death Registrations in 1838?

I will have to order abstracts of the lots. Thanks
