Looking for help in locating husband of Jane/Janet (maiden name unknown, but could be ROSS) Bethune. The 1851 census lists her as "Mrs. Bethune", Glengarry, Charlottenburgh, farming, born in United States, U.E., Kirk of Scotland. She may have been a widow.
In the1861 census she is listed as Jane Bethune, age 81, born "U.S." and is part of the John Grant and Mary Eliza Grant (Bethune). Glengarry, Charlottnburgh. The head of household is Richard Grant. Any suggestions on how to find a marriage or other info would be appreciated. Marcy

Do you know When/ Where Jane BETHUNE passed away ? Registration of Death - Long Form Death Certificate - could be helpful Depending on the requirements of the time: Place of Death Name and Address - Date and Place of Birth - Marital Status . Name of Spouse Names of Parents - Including maiden name of the mother - Place of birth of the parents as known to the informant Date of Death - may or may not state cause of death - Name and Address of Funeral Home - Name and Address of Cemetery Name and address of Informant.

Hello Marcy: Some of these names I think I have seen before. I won't be able to get into my papers until the weekend but will get back to you. Anne Neuman UE

The above would be perfect for someone passing away about 1870 and onwards. Funeral Homes were not wholly used in Glengarry until the 1920's. Before that time, 'waking' was done in the home. Although my mother's youngest brother passed away 1931 and 2 years, he was waked at home. I expect this Jane Bethune passed away before the 1871 census. I don't think obituaries were published in a newspaper in Glengarry County at that time. Anne Neuman UE

Hello Marcy, Having discussed your enquiry with my sister, she suggests that you contact the UELAC United Empire Loyalist group closest to you as they may be able to help you. Jane/Janet Bethune 71 years in 1851 she must have been born about 1780…. maybe before her parents car up to Canada after the Rev. War. This is just a thought.

Hello Anne. Yes you have given me (& Joe Cunningham) help on the Grant line. My line: John Alexander Grant 1823-?, married Mary Eliz Bethune 1824-1891; > Richard N. Grant 1793-1887 m. Barbara Murchison 1788-?; > Alexander Grant 1757-1851 m. Sarah Claridge 1764-1851.
I have not found any info on Alex'r Grant ancestors in Scotland. There are several trees out there that state "John of Duldreggan 1737-1777 m. Caroline Grant 1741-1769. I am still looking for the connection.
Thanks for any thing you might have on Jane or places I can check. You are a great resource for those of us in the US.

There is a tree that says she died 1861 (must be after the 1861 census in Glengarry) in Flat River, PEI. Again, I have no more info on that.

I think she was 81 in the 1861 census, which makes DOB about 1870.
I will see if I can locate UELAC in the US. I never thought of it. Thanks. I think Jane was born in US, maybe New York, met a Bethune and went to Glengarry with other Loyalists. This is what Alex Grant did. I have tried to narrow down "Bethune" in Crown grants, but without first name it's a challenge.

Hello. The only dates I have is her birth year, abt 1780 born in the US. A family tree on Ancestry says she died 1861 in Flat River, PEI. I have no proof on that date.
Wish I had more info. Trying to find a "Bethune" UE in Glengarry who had a Crown grant, but no luck so far.
Thanks for any help for places I can research.

Correction. Yes 1780 would be her birth year, not 1770. Sorry.
