School house on Eigg road 3rd of Lochiel
Hello! Would anyone happen to know the name of the school house that is on Eigg road: 3rd of Lochiel (Eigg road is north of Alexandria, and just across from the 4th of Kenyon) The building is still there. Trees and brushes have now grown up around it, but the steeple of the school house can still be seen from the road. I cannot find the name of the school house anywhere I search online. I'd also like to know what years it was in operation. I have not yet gone in person to the property registration in Alexandria. I use to live in Alexandria. Thank you.

Re: School house on Eigg road 3rd of Lochiel
There is a book The School's of The Glen by Marian MacMaster listing all Glengarry Schools. This one is listed on page 189 and called SS #9 Lochiel Eigg. Both my sister Shannon and my father John Lawrence attended. My father would have been there between 1906 to 1914 but it burned down and my sister would have gone to the present school.

Re: School house on Eigg road 3rd of Lochiel
Hi again Tal,
What would ' S S ' stand for in the name?
We drove by yesterday and peered in through the door. It was a genealogist dream to stand where history is preserved.
Thanks,, Maureen

Maureen,
I believe it stands for Secondary School as opposed to Primary School which would probably be from grades 1 to 7.

Hi, Contact the Public Library -for the area - they may have information about schools - in the area - Municipal / Town office - may have an archive - with information - perhaps photographs - of the school - from earlier times. Historical Society - for the area - can prove very helpful

Re: School house on Eigg road 3rd of Lochiel
I believe that S.S. may stand for School Section. My Mother went to S.S.#6 Lorne School. These school were from Grades 1-8 and sometimes they may have 9. After that Youth boarded in town and went to High School.
